I’ve been an avid gardener for years, and this has been on my to do list but I’ve always felt overwhelmed by the undertaking. This book helped me not overthink this and eased my mind a bit. My best friend has had her own coop with several breeds for over a decade and it’s always intrigued me so it was helpful to understand the process a bit more. Lots involved! Having grown up raising chickens in a small Texas town, I decided to check out this book to see if it would be a good fit for my nephews, who are just getting started. It covers all the basics, from setting up a simple coop to keeping hens healthy and safe from predators. What the book does well is break down each step so it isn’t overwhelming, even going so far as to share ways you can save money, which I appreciate. That said, the advice sometimes feels a little too basic if you already have some experience. There are more detailed and hands-on guides if you’re looking to really fine-tune your flock or get into more advanced care. I did like the bonus gardening planner that came with it, but I probably won’t be reaching for this every time I have a chicken question. For absolute beginners, it’s a pretty decent starting point, but if you grew up with chickens or have spent a season or two raising them, you might want something with more depth. ... show more

This book has absolutely everything you need to know to have a successful happy flock of chickens...from which type of chicken is best for where you live to the right coop, proper feed, disease prevention, and how to keep you and the chickens safe and happy.
