  • So far so good
Got the barrel and added to my gutter. Also added a water transfer pump to use a garden hose attached to it (second photo). Overall this is great. I only gave 4/5 stars because as others have said, the 1inch garden hose overflow is NOT sufficient. Water overflows so fast. I had to make it a 2 inch hole and added a rubber Fernco overflow with a black hose. It works great now. ... show more

  • Dirty inside and out, ew
I'm a bit miffed because this was very dirty, it had dirt, writing and scratches on the outside, a nasty black gummy area where there was apparently a label and actual dirt inside. Had to clean the outside with krudcutter, and could not get all the adhesive residue or writing off it. Cleaned the inside with water, got the dirt out but it still smells. The advertising says these are cleaned, this one wasn't. Then, I had to order a 1" drill bit to be able to install the overflow valve. Then I visited their website to buy a stand, because this really needs to be off the ground, and find out I could have saved $50 buying the stand and barrel together with some mosquito dunks from their website instead of on Amazon. And I ordered a better diverter, the one they sent looks cheap. So I will end up spending over $300 on this smelly used rainbarrel, and I hate the color, should have got an oak one. Mad at myself. Not my day, LOL. ... show more

  • Happy with it, but would not buy it again.
Edited review. It seems like a nice barrel, round unlike so many others, and I like that the top can be removed easily. The brass spigot seems sturdy. There are a couple of problems with it, though. First, the barrel originally held food. I assume mirainbarrel cleaned it out before recycling it, but there must have been food remnants on it, because the bugs loved it -- nasty, stinging itty-bitty black bugs. We washed it off and sprayed some cedarcide on the outside and that helped; the bugs were gone in a few days. Second, the hose connection at the top drains out water much more slowly than it's coming in and yes we checked the hose. We get heavy rains here, not just some sprinkles every now and then. So with the first heavy rain, we got a huge spillover right next to the house. It seems obvious to us now that with a hose connection going out and a much larger connection from the gutter, this spillover would happen. To be fair, this is likely a problem with many other rain barrels. We think we have solved this problem but as always seems to happen, the second we think we solved it, the rains stopped coming so unless we start running water through the hose, we can't test our solution. We schlepped to the hardware store and bought a 4" hole drill + arbor and a length of black flexible expandable pipe, the kind they use in French drains. We inserted the pipe into the hole and are waiting to see if this will work to divert the overflow. More news as it happens. Update July 31 2018. There is a 4" drain coming from my gutter into the barrel. During the rainy season here, our barrel can easily fill up and overflow out the top and down the sides near our foundation. To compensate, we need a 4" drain. It's working. The barrel is holding up and still looks nice. The bugs are gone. Unfortunately, the price has gone up to $184; I paid $110 for it in September 2017. Fortunately, we've learned where the barrels with removable tops are at the nearby flea market and we've learned how to convert them to rain barrels. Extra bonus: no flies. ... show more

  • Full barrel of rain water in two months
The media could not be loaded. We live in the Northwest and it rains a lot. We started using it early January. As of Feb 26, the barrel is full. We meant to reserve it for summer watering when it is dry. Since it fills up so quickly, we decide to get 2 second once. We followed the instruction, nailed the net on the top, added some rocks to prevent mosquito. Glad to know we are part of the eco friendly process. ... show more

  • As expected for the most part
Only issue was the water spicket was damaged, but the seller sent a replacement immediately. Otherwise, mostly as expected. Know that the overflow needs to be installed by you, the buyer.

  • Great product but terrible customer service
This barrel works well. Some people commented on a sticky substance inside. I think it's oil residue from the olives but it didn't bother me or seem to get in the water. I like the greek writing on the outside of the barrel and I like reusing. I needed a new lid for the barrel and wrote to the company twice asking about it but they didn't respond either time. Zero stars for customer service. ... show more

  • Here's one way to fix the overflow problem.
First of all, I really like this rain barrel. But other comments are right, a garden hose size fitting is way too small to serve as an overflow. What I did was drill a hole in the side of the barrel and ran 2-inch PVC pipe into it. Inside the barrel, the pipe takes a 90-degree turn upward and ends at whatever height you want the water level to be before it starts to overflow. The output then goes to the sewer or flexible tubing or wherever else you need it to go. Mine feeds into a length of flexible downspout that runs away from the house a few feet. If you want to use larger pipe, go for it. You can drill the hole at whatever height is convenient for you. The PVC is sealed with waterproof silicone caulk. Hope this helps. ... show more
