  • Reiner Knizia does Qwirkle
If you are in the modern board games hobby, you know the name Reiner Knizia. He's developed something like 900 games (including re-implementations) - guy is ridiculous. So when you combine his pedigree with a lovely casual game like Qwirkle, I had to give it a try. This adds complexity with the colored backgrounds to take it from being super casual to medium light weight I'd say. Nice twist, new way to play, nice idea. The thing is, I feel like Qwirkle has its sweet spot and the gamers who enjoy it... may not enjoy this, as it's a little too much going on? Not sure. Also I feel like my original version had higher quality pieces, and certainly a more readable rulebook/sheet in this case. If you like the game and want a little more from it, it's a no brainer though. PS - Reiner frequently claims despite how many games he's created, he never plays other peoples' designs. I guess that wasn't true in this case! ... show more

  • A More Challenging Qwirkle
Qwirkle Flex is a fun game where players are rewarded points for placing tiles in horizontal and vertical rows of colors or shapes, provided there are no duplicates of any in the row after placement. That said, any row can be no longer than six tiles and completing a row (a Qwirkle) gets you a bonus. What makes this different than the original Qwirkle is that there are now three background colors too, which don’t matter to horizontal or vertical placement rules but can be scored on their own based upon diagonal rows formed with previously placed tiles that share their background. A single diagonal row of matching tile background colors can also not exceed 6, with a Qwirkle Flex bonus scored for completing a diagonal row. This elegant change introduces a bit more complexity that will appeal to anyone who found the original to be a bit too easy. Only downside is that the yellow shapes kind of blend in a bit on the white backgrounds and the cardboard trays are a bit hard to assemble without mangling the edges a bit. But not annoying enough to deduct a star. Nice game 5/5 ... show more
