  • Great Set Of Rulers For New Quilters
I’ve been quilting for years now and own many different sized rulers from various sellers, i.e., creative grids, Omnigrid/Omnigrip, olfa, Missouri star quilt, etc. I like the simple and easy to read rulers from Missouri star quilt, but they are NOT slip resistant (stick-on grippy products are OK but not as good and can hang up on fabric edges) and have no angle lines needed for various quilt blocks. Olfa frost rulers are better with a non-slip surface but, again, simpler isn’t always better or useful. Omnigrip (non-slip) is better than Omnigrid (no built-in slip resistance) and comes in various sizes. Overall, though, I think creative grids rulers have the best features including the nonslip surface, flip around for whole and half inch cutting, angles, quarter inch seam allowance around edges, etc. But creative grids rulers are expensive, and new quilters might not know exactly what they need. For the price, this ultra grid set includes many of the best features of each brand and useful sizes for quilters. Add Quiltcut’s set of spin about rectangle rulers (which are the most useful sizes and, like creative grids versions, include guidelines to measure and trim flying geese) and a 24” (by 6”, 6.5”, or 8.5”) ruler (fiskars 24” folding ruler will save space), and a new quilter would be good to go for a whole lot less money. In hindsight, this is what I would have done. Then, eventually, I’d added Quiltcut’s set of spin about square rulers (to complete square up ruler sizes), and specialty rulers/trim tools only as desired (but never really needed if you learn to use the rulers you already have — my most used are creative grids mini diamond trim tool for small 60 degree diamonds and triangles, hexagons, etc. and a half square triangle trimmer/square up tool - I like bloc loc but it’s used after opening and pressing and works best if seams are pressed to the side, not open, so I think the clearly perfect slotted trimmers are more versatile and can be used for more than just trimming half square triangle blocks (before being opened and pressed), i.e., tube quilting with jelly rolls, cutting various sizes of 45 degree triangles, etc.) Finally, there are a lot of expensive specialty items that are marketed for quilting that are just not needed. Avoid the trap to save money and learn to use your basic tools to get the job done. That being said, here’s my list of the other tools that a new quilter should consider purchasing to complete a useful quilt kit: rotary cutter (this item is very subjective, olfa brand is very good and comes in a variety of versions/sizes, but I’ve recently discovered Zoid’s 28mm, 45mm, and 60mm with double sheaths for people who can cut with right and left hands for excellent prices) rotary cutting mat (again, subjective, but for the money, I think the fiskars brand in 24” x 36” and 18” x 24” are best; they also come in folding versions if you’re looking to save space when storing or for travel friendly options) fabric scissors (as a beginner, I purchased gingher’s 8 inch dressmaker’s fabric scissors on Amazon for @ $22, they are excellent but my very favorite pair now is Omnigrid's 8-1/2" fabric scissors (yellow) with Kai blades for @ $15) small trimming scissors (Omnigrid’s 4 inch needlecraft scissors (yellow) with Kai blades are excellent, I also like Tula Pink/Suki Sews micro tip scissors and Fiskars Easy Action micro tip scissors) seam ripper and measuring tape (my favorites are the clover white ergonomic seam ripper because it’s the thinnest and sharpest I’ve found and the clover white retractable measuring tape that doesn’t appear to be available on Amazon, but both are available on Wawak for great prices) pins and magnetic pin holder (these items are very subjective but I like clover silk pins and Blue Feather Classic Sewing PinPal magnetic pin holder) clover wonder clips (just trust me, they’re very useful, and if you can’t find fair prices on Amazon or elsewhere, check out Wawak) iron (any cheap brand will do but I love and recommend the Panasonic cordless iron - deal or no deal, it’s worth every penny, can be placed anywhere, has a cover for travel, and the newest version shuts off after 30 minutes instead of 10 minutes) wide ironing board and 24” x 17” wool pressing mat (my favorite wide ironing board is the room essentials version without any metal iron rest from Target for @ $50 and the wool pressing mat can be purchased for a reasonable price on Amazon, I like it because it absorbs heat which makes handling fabric while ironing easier on the fingers) quilters clappers (these aren’t a necessity but help flatten seams and blocks after ironing, Jackson Woodwork’s 6"x6" and 9"x9" square set (available on Amazon) are especially good for quilt blocks) sewing machine (any will do, but if you’re looking to buy one, I’d save up for a Singer HD 6800C with table combo (look for deals in combination with coupons on Singer’s website on Black Friday and Christmas/end of year for best prices). For the money, it’s speedy (1100 SPM) with more amp power than most midrange sewing machines and all of the bells and whistles (auto thread cutter button, needle up/down button, speed control slide, feed dog up/down, etc.) that make piecing (and quilting) a breeze in a travel friendly package. Then, if you fall in love with quilting and want to up your game, you can’t go wrong with a Juki TL semi-industrial straight stitch sewing machine and will still have a decent sewing machine with zig zag and other utility/decorative stitches when needed. Hope this helps anyone considering quilting as a hobby. ... show more

  • Terrific
As advertised, these UltraGrid rulers by QuiltCut do not slip. I love the 1/2" mark to assist lining up for rotary cuts. This brand rulers have marked both edges for reading up the ruler and down in reverse; quite nifty & very handy. The color scheme is blue on tan, a little different than other quilt rulers, but vision is not impaired when rotary cutting with these rulers. Wish I had known about these rulers before I invested in the popular die cut system that ties up work and storage space. I'm very happy with this brand of quilt rulers. I plan to replace all my rulers with UltraGrid by QuiltCut. ... show more

  • Great starter set
Love this set of rulers. The only other one I felt was missing was a 3x18 but that’s easily purchased on its own.

  • They Don't Slip
They truly don't slip so cutting is safer, more accurate. That said, lining up the edge of fabric within the lines can be challenging. It's easier to see some colors of fabric than others. So you need good light and a little patience. I'm happy these are made in the USA and at a very reasonable price. ... show more

  • Precisely measured!!
After purchasing several different kinds of rulers for use with my quilting, I found these to be a perfect fit. I love that I can use these rulers with ease being a left-handed cutter, and that once I put them in place on the fabric and I’m ready to cut they do not move and slip as other brands have done. The markings on them are easy to see easy to read and make cutting a precise, easy job, which then makes my quilt look even better. ... show more
