  • Like the Swiss Army Knife of Gaming Systems
Great.. I wanted another PS3 for the Blu Ray player and streaming as well as home media streaming. This system is great for all of them and a Great Gaming system as well. I bought the Black Friday $199 250gig new slimmer model but couldn't use it due to the top loading disc tray. Sadly I had to return it and have been looking for this model. I just bought the 160GB at BB yesterday for $239 with $20 PS Network Card. Taking it back today! For $249 plus the included annual PS Plus subscription the PS3 is only $199 for the double the hard drive space. I am sure these systems will come down in price when the PS4 is on the horizon but this system does everything I need now and then some. Top rated Blu Ray player, does 3D, all the HD codices, streams from every service I use including Amazon Prime, I can access all of our computers and stream videos and pictures, and top it off I can play games as well. I was going to buy a Smart, 3D, Blu Ray player and for basically the same cost I get more with the PS3. Also most of the Smart 3D Blu Ray players don't stream Amazon Prime! To top it off Sony does an outstanding job updating the PS3. The stand alone Blu Ray players don't do as good a job at updates. It is usually one year or short after the next model comes out and support ends! This model has an auto front disc loader and works great if you have the PS3 in an entertainment center. It was for this reason I could not use the new slim model. Even with a couple of inches above the unit I couldn't comfortably access the top loading disc tray. Now the only thing I don't know about is how to clone my existing PS3 to the new one so I can use two PS3's in my home and have access to the game saves I have on my existing my current PS3. My thought is the included cloud service with the PS Plus service. It said it can be used for game saves. I am thinking sign up for the service and save all my games to the cloud and then install and run the game on the new system and pull the saves from the cloud. I am not sure if this is even doable. I just started to look into my options and found that some game saves will not transfer over! Anyone have two PS3's in their home and done this? ... show more

  • SADLY, EXTRAS JUST A GIMMICK IN THIS BUNDLE
Amazon markets this as "PS3 320 GB PS+ Instant Game Collection" and claims "LittleBigPlanet 2, inFAMOUS 2, Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One as part of the Instant Game Collection included with your 1 Year PS Plus Membership". According to service reps at PS, PS PLUS membership cards were left out or invalid in a huge lot of these bundles, and these specific games are not included in the deal. Had to talk to a PS customer service supervisor to get them to agree to honor the 1 year membership deal provided I had evidence of purchase. I bought this based on AMAZON's claim of included games. Nice system, but, in the end, I feel like a sucker. ... show more

  • A disturbing trend..
The console itself is pretty good if not getting a bit aged. I've had one myself for a numer of years. The main problem I have with this "bundle" is how it is marketed. You are getting a one year subscription for a SERVICE that happens to include access to a rotating set of games as long as you are an active member. I have no issue with that as long as that is how it is spelled out to the potential buyer. As marketed now it is just misleading :( ... show more

  • Great deal, but downloading takes forever
Okay, this is a terrific console, and I'm excited to have it, but I bought as a Christmas gift not understanding how LONG it would take to download all the bundled games from the Sony site. If I'd known that, I would have worked on it the week prior to Christmas so it would have been fully loaded and ready to play out of the box. For some reason, I figured those games would be pre-loaded. My mistake. I did buy an actual game to play and that looked great and worked as expected. I've got a 6M internet connection. It took a full day and a half to pull down the three featured games. If you buy, just know that. Grab an HDMI cable when you purchase to take full advantage of the high def capabilities. The default analog video connection looks just terrible. ... show more

  • Playstation Plus is surprisingly great. The Playstation Network itself needs work.
Initially, I didn't think much about the fact that this system came with the Playstation Plus subscription. I knew it was supposed to offer discounts on games kind of like Xbox Live Gold, but that was all I knew. I'd probably never buy Xbox Live Gold though, if it weren't the only thing letting me play multiplayer games online, so I would never have bought a subscription to Playstation Plus on my own. What I didn't realize was that the subscription not only offers regular discounts on games, but completely free downloads of certain titles, a new one every week or two. That, to me, adds a great deal of value to this package, provided that you haven't already played the games being offered elsewhere. There's also the problem of wondering if I should buy a game when it's discounted briefly or wait to see if it becomes free later. What I don't much care for is the inconsistency of the Playstation Network itself. I guess I was spoiled by Xbox Live, but PSN can be difficult to deal with at times. Sometimes it's simply unavailable, so all those free games you'd probably like to download will be unplayable until it comes back. And then, when it is working, navigating the store can sometimes slow down so bad that you'll have to press a button 3 to 4 times for it to register. Again, this makes getting your free games a hassle. As for the system itself, it seems to work perfectly fine. Good build quality on the hardware, I believe this version of the console is the first redesign, before the last iteration, which I've heard is inferior to this one. The controller included with the system doesn't charge when the system isn't on, which means that every once in a while, you'll either have to play with the controller plugged in or leave the system running just to charge the controller. On the bright side, the controllers connect via USB, so making the decidedly short cable longer is a simple matter of finding a USB extension cable, which are very inexpensive. Whether someone ought to spend their savings on this system, however, comes down to two things: Whether you want to play the games available exclusively on this system and/or if you want the best 3D Blu-Ray player available. I bought it for the second reason. That said, I have found a decent number of exclusive titles that I have enjoyed playing, in some cases for free. But if you are just looking for a game system, and don't particularly care about Sony exclusives, you'd be better off getting an Xbox 360, because most multiplatform games simply perform better on one. ... show more
