  • This darning mushroom is better than an egg
Needing to darn the heel of a pair of valuable wool socks to extend their useful life, I searched Google to learn how to do it and found an instructional video on YouTube. Then I went to a local sewing store and found the required darning needle and thin wool thread, but the only object there which could serve as a sewing base was a thin, unpainted wooden spindle called an "egg". The price was about the same as the total cost of this German mushroom including the airmail postage from Europe. This mushroom is better for darning than a narrow egg. The broad curvature of the surface is not so acute as the egg. It fits just right inside a sock. It is made of real wood, not plastic, smoothly varnished and painted an attractive red color easy to find in a sewing kit when mixed with other small things, and the cheerful homey motif practically invites one to sew something with it. It reminds one of the German tradition of crafting wooden toys for Christmas, although actually made in China. The exact machined tolerances between the stem and base give a precise fit, easy to assemble. ... show more

It is darn good. I wound up glueing the handle in place because it fell out easily but that was no big deal.

  • Cute.
I haven't had to use it to darn a sock yet but it's really cute. I'm almost wishing for a hole in one of my knit socks.

  • Not Sure about This One
This arrived, finally, today. No instructions with it at all. Looking at the two pieces, there were no signs of how to attach them. I finally got out a rubber mallet and started pounding on the end of the stem away from the red top, with a rubber mat under the top. It seems to have worked, for now at least. I'm going to keep looking for one made in the U.S.A. ... show more

  • Darning mushroom
I had not darned socks for many years until an elderly man at church complained about not having anyone to darn his socks since his wife's blindness. I said I could do it for him but could no longer find my mushroom or darning thread (must have thrown them out when I no longer needed them). No longer grow guards so needed a solid darning surface. Finding the mushroom on line was a big help! ... show more

  • Smaller than description
Purchased for decorative sock darning. Actual size was much smaller than the product description when it was purchased. Poorly engineered, so the stem handle won't secure into the mushroom cap. It comes apart repeated when in use and was difficult to hold since the handle was shorter than the posted description. It did come very quickly, was reasonably priced and is attractive, I whittled down the tip of a longer, thicker dowel stick to replace the short, poorly fitting original handle and am enjoying using the resultant tool, which is suitable for smaller darning projects. I did contact the seller upon receipt explaining all my issues but never received a response. ... show more
