A place setting of dishes in this line includes a mug rather than a cup and saucer. Since we are tea drinkers I set myself on a mission to find the teacups and saucers, which weren't available at Macy's or Bloomingdale's where I had purchased the other dishes. I was surprised to find them on Amazon and ordered them with some trepidation over whether they would arrive undamaged and whether they would be seconds or first quality. As always, my faith in Amazon was not misplaced. These cups arrived without a scratch and are a perfect match for the rest of my dishes. This line by Sophie Conran is, like everything else these days, mass produced in China. However, they are designed to give the impression of handmade pottery dishes. The lines on the pieces are meant to simulate the marks you would find on a hand thrown piece as it comes off the potter's wheel. The saucers, as with all the flat dishes and platters in this line, have somewhat wavy edges - again to simulate the look of hand thrown pottery. (If you are planning to get a set of these dishes, you need plenty of space to store them. The plates and platters are all somewhat wavy, not flat. As none of the pieces, including bowls and cups, are perfectly symmetrical, they are difficult to stack and take up more shelf space than traditional dishes.) The teacups appear to hold a generous amount without being freakishly large. They are more of a triangular shape than the traditional tulip shape cup. Although they give the illusion of being substantially larger than the teacups that came with my Johnson Brothers dishes - they hold the same amount of liquid. I just took out a measuring cup so I can report these cups hold eight ounces, or one fluid cup. The white dishes have a creamy white, fired-clay pottery look - not a dazzling bright white translucent bone china kind of white. All the pieces in this line come in gorgeous green presentation boxes lined with green tissue, and make lovely registry gifts. If you like like the Sophie Conran for Portmeirion line and want the hard-to-find teacups, you can feel confident ordering them from Amazon. Recommended! ... show more

These are a very lovely shade of purple with a very smooth, thick glaze and really attractive looking. They're a good size for tea, not too small. The plates underneath are big enough for treats or holding a tea bag and have a fun wave about them, plus plenty of dip to collect splashing tea. When they first shipped, the packaging slipped a bit and two cups knocked against each other and one of the three shattered. Amazon quickly replaced them and as long as they don't bang against each other, they are fine. They're good quality and unique, so the price was worth it for me, and they go very well with the matching tea kettle to make a full set. ... show more

I have this set of dishes which comes with coffee mugs. That's fine, but sometimes, and especially with my green tea, I want a cup and saucer. I am very pleased with the shape and weight. Look forward to using them with company.

I have several items in this collection and I love tea, so it was a no brainer to buy the set. Having said that, one drawback is that the cups are so wide at the top that tea/coffee gets cold quite fast. I guess that can be good sometimes or not bother some people, but I wish it stayed warm longer.
