  • Nice set
Style: 6-Tool Combo Kit Only
Needed a lightweight battery set for a second home. This fits the bill. The tools work really well (I have had a porter cable drill and driver for years from another set) and I am impressed with the selection. Recently put in a kitchen using just these. Worth it.

  • Porter-Cable Tools Rock!
Style: 6-Tool Combo Kit Only
I've used, although not a lot yet, all the parts of this kit excluding the USB charging device and I am more than pleased with the performance of everything. I'm not a contractor or professional, but I'm experienced with the use of tools, and have other cordless and corded tools just like these. I'd call myself and advanced amateur/DIY person - I bought these as I started the renovation of my hundred year old home. 1. First and foremost, these are smaller units, lightweight and of decent build quality - makes them easy to handle and easy to get into tight areas. 2. Having a complete set of tools that all use the same battery makes it very convenient. I do see the need for another battery - two in use and one on the charger, but the two batteries included works fine. 3. The impact driver work flawlessly and drives screws quickly - not good for backing out a screw, but it does what it is supposed to, it drives screws fast and without effort. 4. The drill/driver is a more versatile tool, good for driving screws, backing them out and drilling. 5. The reciprocating saw is sweet! This little gem may well be the best tool in the pack. With the right blade for the material you are cutting, it is much more controllable than bigger units, smaller and easy to wield, and powerful, and it has variable speed settings which make it easy to cut through anything with precision. Cutting through a 2" cast iron pipe was easy, and holding it overhead while I did it was easy due to how lightweight the saw is. 6. The oscillating saw is great too, small, compact and again, easy to get into tight areas. Doesn't vibrate so severely that when using it for extended periods of use your hand gets tired. The quick blade change lever is great when changing blades for cutting in different materials. 7. The 5 1/2 circular saw is great for cutting up to 2" lumber easy and quick, and it's small and lightweight which means you can carry and move it around almost effortlessly. I will say it isn't a precision tool, so no cabinet making with it, but for general use, it is great. 8. The adjustable LED light sits on the battery pack and can be moved around and adjusted to illuminate the work area. It won't light up large areas, but it is fine for lighting up a specific smaller area. About the only negative is the bag - it could be bigger. I haven't found the perfect arrangement of tools so that it contains everything and closes easily. The batteries last fairly well - I've used all the tools for a full day and so far haven't run into a dead battery problem. I do though remember to charge then at the end of the day. All-in-all this is a great kit at a great price. To date I'm more than pleased with this purchase and will update this review as time goes on. ... show more

  • Still good tools, despite the changes. Ignore the haters.
Style: 6-Tool Combo Kit Only
I invested in Porter Cable 20 Volt cordless tools back when they first became available. They were great tools, surviving the use and abuse dished out on job sites – dropped off ladders, left out in the rain, “borrowed” by other tradesman who were less than careful with somebody else’s tools. I still have most of them, and they still work great, even if they aren’t so pretty any more. Sadly, I have watched the quality of Porter Cable Cordless tools slowly decline. They are still good tools, but not the amazing pro quality they once were. I no longer make my living as a contractor, so when I recently found myself in need of a small cordless circular saw, and because I have a sizable investment in PC batteries, chargers and tools, I bought this kit when it was on sale. I’m glad I did. 5-1/2 inch circular saw: This is the only cordless Porter Cable circular saw worth owning at this point. Its ample power chomps through plywood (my main use for this saw) and does fine with 90 degree cuts through 2x lumber. The batteries last a reasonable amount of time, though I would advise using a 4AH battery rather than the 2AH ones that come in this kit. It uses common 10mm arbor 5-1/2 inch saw blades. They are easy to install and remove using the built in arbor lock and 5mm hex wrench that stows in the saw body. The shoe and it’s angle adjusting mount are stamped steel. The saw body and blade guard are all plastic. Despite this, it feels good in the hand, with grippy rubber in all the right places. The only thing I don’t like (detest, actually) is the trigger. You have to push one button sideways, then pull the trigger to turn the saw on. If you don’t keep the trigger pulled really tight, the saw turns off in the middle of the cut. Not very ergo-dynamic, and seems to me a distraction rather than a safety feature. Still, I like this saw a lot, and it does what I need it to. Recipro Saw: Has a heavy plastic case with plenty of grippy rubber. Feels really good. The trigger is well placed and easy to use. Takes standard blades. And that’s all the good I can say about it. In their zeal to make it impossible to hurt your fingers, they completely enclosed the blade clamp mechanism and left you with a flimsy plastic tab you have to pull pretty hard to get blades in and out. And the blade clamp itself is rubbish. It allows so much up-and-down slop in the blade it makes this tool much harder to use with any sort of accuracy or finesse. A real pity. My cheapo import recipro saw is a much better tool. Wish it took PC batteries. Oscillating Saw: A surprise winner. A substantial plastic case absolutely covered with grippy rubber makes it easy to hang on to in whatever crazy position you need to get it into. Has a slide on-off switch and dial speed control, exactly as it should – don’t need to be fighting with a variable speed trigger on this type of tool. Takes standard blades, and the blade clamp is excellent. Holds the blade tight, but allows a blade change in a few seconds rather than the minutes my old corded Festool takes (even so, the Festool is amazing.) Yes, the blade change paddle is plastic, but it’s substantial. I don’t expect it to ever break. I’ve already used this tool a bunch. Works great, and it’s just so much easier to deal with than my corded one. Drill/Driver and Impact Driver: The most heavily used of all my Porter Cable Cordless Tools. I still have and use the originals I bought many years ago. They are tough, built like a tank. These new ones have a number of significant changes. More plastic, less metal. Even the chuck on the drill is mostly plastic, while the old one is entirely metal. Gone are the magnetic bit holders, replaced by a metal clip holder. Gone are the battery level meters. Gone are the belt clips. The new drill is a half inch longer than the old one. None of this is bad, necessarily, just different from what I’m used to. Time will tell how well they hold up to hard use. Going strong so far. I’m sure I’ll stop whining once I get used to them. Flashlight: It works. Not very bright. It would have been so much more useful if it had a bright wide angle light panel and some magnets to stick it where it was needed. I think everybody (not just Porter Cable) puts these in their kits so they can claim a higher tool count. Meh. USB adapter. Works. If you’re a phone junkie you’ll probably love it. Doubles as a battery charge meter. 20 Volt Max Batteries: The kit comes with two 2AH (amp hour) batteries. Great if this is your first PC cordless purchase – you don’t have to buy another 100 bucks of batteries. I’m happy to have them, too. They are the same shape, weight, capacity as older PC 20 volt max batteries. The only significant change is they’ve moved the battery gauge from the tools to the batteries. Means that if I use my old batteries on these new tools, I have no gauge at all, so the only way I know the battery needs charging is when it dies. I’m not sure why they thought that was worth doing. Not really that big of a deal, though, just a minor annoyance. Battery Charger: Bait-and-switch!!! When I bought this kit the listing showed a good old indestructible Porter Cable fast charger. But it shipped with a cheap junk wall wart charger instead. I’ve had a few of these with inexpensive import tools, and they always overheat and fail. Tried this one and sure enough, the wall wart got seriously hot while charging a drained battery. Throw it away and buy an exact copy import fast charger. Several to choose from here on Amazon. Half the price, and you wont be rewarding Porter Cable’s dishonesty by buying the charger from them. Tool Bag: Nice, but the zipper is a lightweight. Every Porter Cable bag I’ve ever had has blown out the zipper because I was dumb and tried to put too much in the bag. Don’t overload it and it will be fine. No, all the stuff in this kit will NOT fit in the bag, and you wouldn’t want to carry it around if it did. Get several good tool bags here on Amazon or at your favorite import tool store. Your back and the zippers will thank you. Odds-and-Ends: Comes with one blade for each saw, a sanding pad and paper for the oscillating saw, a screwdriver bit each for the drill and impact driver, and a paper manual for each tool. Everything you need to get started. All well packed in a box that survived shipping and handling. Final thoughts: Great for homeowners and handymen (handypersons?) Half the price of the yellow brand, a third if you get it on sale. They are good tools and will serve you well. ... show more

  • Perfectly good for the weekend warriors.
Style: 6-Tool Combo Kit Only
For the price point, these are completely fine. Build quality felt surprisingly solid for "cheap" tools. So far, I've only put any real use on the sawzall, driver and 1/4" impact, but all have functioned admirably. Probably wouldn't want to have to rely on these to make a living day in and day out, but this is a great kit to have around if you just need something good enough to do the odd project here and there. Only slight complaints are the flashlight and the battery charger. The light is just basically useless; the average cell phone flash is a better light, which just makes it a wasted addition. Would rather just not have the light at all if it meant getting a quality battery charger. ... show more
