  • TWO SUBS ARE THE WAY TO GO
Style: HTS SUB 10 Configuration: Subwoofer
Old school thinking was that one subwoofer placed anywhere would do the job. I lived that way for years and years. It was my “I wonder” attitude that changed that. I originally bought 2 HTS12’s. My living room is about 500 sq foot. Well I soon got tired of straightening the pictures on the walls. Those things are scary. Besides being too much sound for that room they just didn’t sound good to me. Too much boom. I returned them (sorry Amazon and UPS) and got the smaller HTS10’s. I’m happy I did. Nice and tight bass and just the right amount of boom. A couple hints for those new to subwoofers. Don’t expect it to sound the best right out of the box. Find a song that has a good bass line in it. Fiddle with your settings on your receiver or amp till that song sounds good. Start at zeros and increase it a little at a time. It takes a little effort but you’ll be happier in the long run. Second is that a new subwoofer takes some time to break in. It has moving parts and they are stiff when brand new. So you may need to adjust your settings after a few weeks or months depending on how much you play music. But that’s the fun of it. ... show more

  • Here's why I kept the Polk HTS subwoofer
Style: HTS 12 Configuration: Subwoofer
I'm a story teller and so I'm going to tell some of the issues and the reason why kept this sub. So, I was very happy when I got the sub, even though Amazon just left it at the door for anyone to just walk up and take it. Thank God I came home early or I may have never gotten the sub. So after opening the sub, my expectation rose even higher as this sub is Gigantic. In my haste to make sure I had a place for it, I cleaned out my closet. Yes, I was anticipating that this sub had the punching power to give the lows and I could create an enclosure like a closet to only hear vibration and resonance. Once doing so, I quickly learned that this isn't a sub that packs power. When I closed the closet door, I didn't even hear the sub let alone hear any vibration. After doing various test, namely unplugging all other channels and just listening to this sub. This is where I knew that this receiver isn't powerful at all. I sat on my couch in complete quiet and be prepared myself to repackage this thing and send it back. While getting the wrappers together, I found the instructions and decided to give it a read. Now the instructions are only one page, but they are written in various languages so it has a book feel to it. I read through the instructions, even laugh a little when I seen that it said that I should use country music to test the sound in the sub, everybody knows rap is the best test case as rap has all lows in most of it's music, but I digress. But, one thing I read in the instructions were that they gave instructions on where to place the sub. Now, I usually don't read instructions but I read these, I was thinking maybe I missed something. But placement of the speaker was given a whole section. So, I decided to listen to my old subs and then this new sub. Yes, I have 2 other sub the Polk 505s. Those sub are arcane but hard hitting I bought both of those subs on sale so I was able to get two. The Polk 505s sounded good but they have limitations. For example at low frequencies the 505s try - they really try to amplify, but really they sound like paper flapping loudly. The HTS 12' make a sound at low frequencies but it doesn't amplify, at close range. Close range are the operable words here. So after listening to the Polk HTS further back, about 4 feet, they sound good, not 400 dollars good but they sound good for the 330 price. Although, I was still hesitant to keep them bc I just didn't get the amplification that I was looking for. So, I made a final decision, I said I will do what the instructions say and place the speaker next to the Front speakers, so that's what I did. And, I started playing music with all 3 speakers and the Polk HTS placed with the Front speakers, Polk Audio Monitor 70 Series II Floorstanding Speaker. I turned on all of my speakers and played some of the music I used to test my speakers. I'll give you a quick list of those records: Young Jeezy - Put On, Warren G's Regulators - Do you see, Outkast AtLiens - Babylon, The GBE Code - Global (RIP to SD). When I started listening to the music, I quickly understood what the purpose of this sub was. The Polk HTS sub is ALL about PLACEMENT. Also, the Polk HTS is a back up singer, meaning it can sound adequate by itself, but it really shapes the way bass lines are supposed to sound. By the looks, the Polk HTS looks like it has a nipple like other subs, but it doesn't it is using this new cone technology. The Polk HTS also uses the technology that makes it amplify at low frequencies about 4 to 6 feet in front the sub. This makes your center living room the target area of amplification of the supposed .2 hz frequencies that the Polk HTS offers. Also, though the Polk HTS sub does not have a powerful bass line sound, it does shape how the bass sound. This is especially true when paired with the Polk 505s (which is absurdly expensive now days) and I have 2 of them. The 505s are place behind my TV and the other is next to my couch. And yes, you get those .2 frequency lows and when tweaking the frequency nobs, they sound great. I must say that there were songs I used to be like, something is missing. These concern is all alleviated now that I have the HTS. The Polk HTS concentrates on bass quality and not shaking your home. I now have both with the 505s and HTS. I may buy another one, but I have to find a place to put it. But, if I bought it, it would be just to have an even number of subs. Anyway, I've wrote enough - I would recommend this speaker only if you understand the concept of placing this speaker next to your front speaker and it compliment subs that are already hard hitting. The Polk HTS has a very warm sound to it. The HTS really shapes the bass line. I also advise that users of HTS should let all the sounds come out by tuning the speaker at the highest frequencies (keep receiver at 80hz). I think the HTS goes up to 120hz, but place it there and you will reap all the benefits of this receiver. The HTS is a complimentary sub, if you get this one I would get 2 or place this one with others you already have. Great sub, but lacks power but that's ok. If placed right, you can squeeze the juice you need out of it. ... show more

  • For $350 it is a steal. For $500 you can do better
Style: HTS 12 Configuration: Subwoofer
Updated after 2 years of use. I purchased the HTS-12 on sale in 2020 to replace an older Polk sub that failed after about 10 years. True story, no sub lives forever... so think about that before you buy. Probably the biggest reason I opted for this model sub was to match it to the rest of my Polk Signature speakers that are set up in my family room. First of all, the HTS-12 is pretty big (like almost end table big) so make sure that you have the room space to fit it in. If your room is a smaller size, then I'd recommend the HTS-10. This sub was initially set up using the room correction mic that came with my receiver, which is always a good starting point - but over time I have tweaked the settings manually and moved it around the room slightly. The receiver crossovers are set to 80 for the front towers and 100 for the center and rear channels - which sounds right for where they should roll-off. My grades without a curve: Overall Bass Reproduction = B+ LFE Bass for movies = A- LFE Bass for music = B to B+. This is a big ported sub and honestly, its design favors LFE for movies versus music. Clarity = A-. The sound is authoritative, controlled, and not muddy or boomy. Fit, finish design, and construction = A-. It is a handsome piece of equipment. Uses a Class D amp with a composite 4 coil woofer. The cabinet is braced and insulated to dampen resonance. But the finish is a vinyl veneer... which is kind of average for this price point, but just a little disappointing. I do appreciate that this sub has designated LFE input and bypass settings for easy receiver control. In summary: For the price (on sale for $350) this sub can't be beaten. Every sub is a match of size and power to move air and I think the HTS series hits the right balance between these two elements for the price. This HTS-12 sits in my family room which is about 20 x 15 feet with a vaulted ceiling. If the room were any smaller or without a vaulted ceiling I probably would have opted for the HTS-10. For the money, I think it delivers impressive, smooth, and effortless bass without becoming either muddy, boomy, or distorted - when properly set up. Acoustically, I do think that this sub favors home theater setup versus pure HiFi Stereo music which is probably true of all ported subs versus sealed subs. Nevertheless, the response is tight, accurate, and clear enough for me to easily recommend purchasing this sub. However, I do not think that I would have paid the MSRP price of $500 for the HTS-12. All things audio have a rapid and then flat curve of diminishing returns, meaning that once you break out of the low-end price range, every additional dollar spent won't get you the same level of bang for your buck. One of the reasons I purchased this exact sub was to match my other Polk Signature Series speakers in both appearance and sound. I suppose if I wasn't trying to match my other Signature Speakers, I would have easily chosen the Rogers Sound Labs Speedwoofer - which I have set up in my home theater room. The Speed Woofer is a bit smaller but it packs a better punch - especially considering that they are priced about the same. Moreover, I think that the speedwoofer strikes a better balance between music and movies than the Polk. The truth is that Polk makes reasonably priced mass-produced speakers and this sub is an example of that compromise between above-average acoustics, value, and performance. A good sub should blend into the soundstage and disappear acoustically, and the HTS does that very well. The value proposition changes substantially in my mind as the price paid goes up - to the point that I would not pay $500 for this sub since at that price point it begins to compete with more competent and significantly better alternatives for your money. In the end, this sub is worth every penny of the $350 bucks I paid for it, but I wouldn't pay the full price as I do sincerely believe that at the $500 price point you can find better equipment. But if you are looking for a handsome, solid, all-around sub that will deliver above-average low-frequency sound, I believe that the HTS12 hits the sweet spot of price and performance. All the best! ... show more

  • Died after warranty expired
Style: HTS SUB 10 Configuration: Subwoofer
Loved this amp but it died just after the three year warranty ran up. I contacted polk support and after some back and forth, they honored the warranty and sent me a new amplifier board to install myself. They said the board would have been $230 but sent it to me for free within a week.
