  • Fantastic addition to the series!
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Pokemon Sword + Pokemon Sword Expansio...
My sister and I have always bought every mainstream Pokémon game since we were kids. I made the mistake of choosing not to buy this generation due to the mediocre reviews, but finally gave in a few weeks ago. I’m so glad that I did, because this might be one of my favorite Pokémon games to date! The online features add virtually infinite content and offer a break from level grinding and the main storyline. They also add a depth of multiplayer that (in my opinion) wasn’t present in previous titles. While none of the new Pokémon have claimed the spot of my favorite, there’s still a level of quality there that’s noticeable and enjoyable. I agree with some that dynamax/Gigantamax might be too similar to features found in past games, but there’s also something indescribably hilarious about sending out a massive, 100 foot tall Magikarp. As far as the story goes, I’m about halfway through my gym badges so I can’t give a conclusive review. However, I will say that I’m LOVING the characters so far! One of the weaknesses of prior games in my opinion is that the personalities will sometimes fall a little flat, but that isn’t an issue here. In my option, the main rival (Hop) is one of the most lovable to date. The other rivals, Bede and Marnie, are also incredibly charming in their own ways! Each gym leader has a unique personality along with their own animations in battle. The soundtrack is lovely from what I’ve heard so far, and the gym music in particular really shines. The primary complaints I’ve seen with this game are 1) that a lot of content is locked behind a paywall and 2) that not all Pokémon have returned in this generation. For the former, I agree that it’s a bit of a bummer that you have to shell out $30 for additional content. I think it’s important to remember though that the amount of content added is truly massive! I’ve spent more time in Dynamax Adventures than I have with the base game, and it really is worth shelling out the extra cash. As nice as free content updates would be, I’m sure creating the new content is costly and time-consuming, so I can understand the additional price tag. As for the second complaint, it really is unfortunate that not all Pokémon made the cut. However, I feel that this was inevitable considering the sheer number of Pokémon that exist now. I’ve tried to avoid looking up which ones don’t exist in the game and haven’t really noticed their absence at all! There are still plenty of options, and the wild area adds plenty of life to the ones that do exist. It doesn’t feel like an incomplete game in the slightest! Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this game! I’m still invested after several weeks of playing and have had a blast raiding with my friends. The overall vibe is different somehow from previous games, but I don’t think it’s a bad change at all and adds a breath of fresh air to an already great series! If you enjoy the Pokémon games but are hesitant to buy this one because of the mixed reviews, I’d recommend trying it yourself before passing judgement. I didn’t expect to enjoy it, but I’m so glad that I took the chance! ... show more

  • Highly recommend getting the game.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Pokemon Sword + Pokemon Sword Expansio...
Excellent game that provides a lot of content and hours of fun. Would highly recommend this game to anyone. Its easy to get into with awesome gameplay a good story and a huge world to explore. The expansion passes are worth getting as well as it provides additional content with each pass being unique and offering new environments to explore. The selection of Pokemon to catch is huge and the amount of legendary Pokemon in the game is a lot too. Highly recommend picking this game up. ... show more

  • Everything is on the cart.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Pokemon Sword + Pokemon Sword Expansio...
This includes the expansion pass, which is all of the DLC included on the cart. As for the game, this is my favorite Pokemon game on the Nintendo Switch. I think Sword/Shield are superior to Scarlet/Violet, Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee and Shining Pearl/Brilliant Diamond. I still haven't played Arceus though. ... show more

My girls and I have been wanting a Switch since they first came out and this year we were fortunate enough to get a new Animal Crossing version! I picked this Pokemon Sword with Expansion pass for another game for us to play. We all love Pokemon and I grew up playing the Gameboy Color versions. I'm stoked to be able to check out this new and improved Pokemon game! ... show more

  • Product is good for posterity purposes, DLC is included on cart.
Platform: Nintendo Switch Edition: Pokemon Sword + Pokemon Sword Expansio...
Normally don't write reviews but wanted to post one for this product. Originally bought Pokemon Shield at launch and recently decided to get Pokemon Sword+Expansion Pass strictly for posterity purposes. First off I want to provide confirmation that Ise of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC is on the physical cartridge. Which is good because I would be very irritated if I payed $90 for false advertising. Anyway to be sure this was the case I turned off wi-fi and set the system to Airplane mode for my Switch to make sure it was unable to perform any internet connection. Then inserted the Pokemon Sword + Expansion Pass cart into the switch, booted it up from the beginning with no previous save data. After getting to the first wild area and going back to the Wedgehurst station you encounter the first DLC sequence, after catching slowpoke you can talk to guide next to the train and they will immediately provide you access to both Ise of Armor and Crown Tundra. It's kinda interesting fighting level 60 pokemon in Crown Tundra with a level 10 Grookey but that's besides the point. As for the quality of the game itself, it's pretty much the standard affair for the series. Production value is better than previous entries, gameplay is decent, amount of content is much more satisfying than the original release. For first time players of the franchise or this entry, this specific version of Pokemon Sword (or Pokemon Shield respectively) will most likely be a fairly enjoyable experience. For long time fans, milage will definitely vary but that's to be expected at this point. ... show more
