Second came the colorful cover illustration by author and illustrator Mies van Hout. If you read “Happy”, “Friends” or “Pussycat pussycat” you probably already know and love Mies van Hout’s artwork. Her pictures speak mostly for themselves – and she has the wonderful skill to engage readers every age. “Playground” (I like the sound of the original title: “Prentenboek“) stays true to the first sentence on it’s cover. Readers follow the main actors of this book, a little girl and boy, to a special playground. First, they run through the dunes – but which part should they take? Little readers can engage, let their fingers do the walking, climb trees, jump from water lily to water lily to get across a river and help their new friends through a busy anthill. And did you ever want to slide down a cliff? A new creature joins the children from each landscape, contributing to an ever-lengthening parade to the playground. “Playground” is not just fun to read, it’s a truly appealing playground for the mind of little ones, offering interactive fun while training coordination and problem solving skill. This book is an imaginative journey for your fingers! It's one of my son's favorite (mine too). I'm surprised it's not more popular. It has a beautiful message - the world is our playground if we use our imagination!

    • Okay, but not great. Very creative!

Playground is interactive in a sense if you are looking for a storytime read aloud; it could be similar to the We're Going On a Bear Hunt, as the kids have quite the adventurous journey they could act out a different aspect on each page. . I already mentioned the fun, crazy, and perfect illustrations, but I do have a little qualm with the layout. The kids are on an adventure, and I wish you could distinctly see them traveling from left to right across the pages; however, instead I found myself confused at times about the path the kids were taking. Sometimes, the path was a bit too maze like. Even though the pages all had arrows pointing the direction the kids are traveling it still wasn't always completely clear where I should be looking. While reading each page, and a completely different aspect of their journey, I felt it was all too random and disconnected. It wasn't until the end of the book when they wanted to head back did I realize the story was the creative imaginative journey they were having. Even though the story was the imagination of the children and children are random, but it still was a bit too disconnected. Overall, I did enjoy the story, and I do think there is a place for it. However, Playground was just okay and that is why it earned the 3 star rating. ... show more

The illustrations in this book are lovely, different and fun. But I wasn't sure about underlying story - I originally thought that the adventures were taking place at the playground (ie the kids were using their imaginations as they played on the equipment) but at the end you realise they have not reached the playground yet. My nearly 6 year old was generally uninterested and unimpressed. ... show more
