  • better than ever
My daughter needed apple car play and wanted to keep a cd player. This works great!!

  • It works (Kind of) Be prepared for some stress (sometimes a lot of stress if in a Dodge)
If you have a Dodge be aware that it does not play well with Uconnect. I sometimes spend 5 or more minutes trying to bypass before starting my drive (DO NOT start driving until you have won the battle or you may get road rage from your car and dont think powering down radio shuts up the Uconnect assistant ... it does not always work and can make for a high stress drive) That said once (IF) it does start working it does the job but it is not seamless or stress free so If you do not have patience, take heart of blood pressure medicine, or if you do not do well with technology, I would steer clear of this because you will wish you had your factory installed radio back within a few stops (every time you turn off the engine and then turn it back on you have to play "guess the bypass that will make Uconnect shut up and let you use your radio this time" game. I will eventually be getting a new radio because it is ok when it works but frustrating as ... well rhymes with bell ...when it does not. One time I had the Uconnect intro kicking off every 30 seconds - 60 seconds for about 30 minutes and as I said turning the radio of does not stop Uconnect from talking (as I found out on this occasion). The only way to try and bypass Uconnect once she is on her tangent is to turn the car off and back on (and god help your blood pressure if she all of a sudden starts speaking french to you for a day or two.... yeah that happened to me too) The one thing I recently figured out (which works MOST of the time) is you start out with the phones Blue tooth on when turning on the car then when Uconnect connects to your blue tooth connection and goes through her intro shpeel (sp?) say cancel wait for the cancel sound and then turn your blue tooth off then the apple car play works (Oh right did I mention when you'er not battling your Uconnect you will have to content with bluetooth / apple car play because when you leave your blue tooth on and PLUG your phone in to get apple car play to work the phone fights with itself for control of the music controls and that is no fun either. so all in all.... yeah pick another radio if driving a Dodge with Uconnect or be prepared for a battle every time you get in the car and turn on the ignition. I gave it a 3 stars only because when the battle is won, having apple car play is a cool feature to have so I would definitely get that regardless of the radio. It is another one of those apple products you blow off thinking "big deal, who needs it?" but then you are like man this is awesome, how did I live without it once you get the hang of it. WAZE is cool on Apple Car Play by the way (another one of those "big deal who needs it?" products. I swore by apple maps until I couldn't get around a local road closure using it. I switched to Waze out of desperation and immediately got the alternate route and have been on Waze ever since. ... show more

  • Love it! Now wife wants one!
I only installed 2 days ago. Will update if something changes. Took pretty much all day to install with backup camera in my 2001 Tundra. I was nervous cutting off OEM connectors to splice in the Pioneer wire harness to the vehicle harness, so went really slow. Took my another hour or so of research next day to get the backup camera video. Turns out I plugged it into the Video in instead of the dedicated backup camera input. Moved to the correct input and works great. Now wife wants one in 2008 4Runner. Documentation is weak. YouTube is required. I don't think Pioneer wants DIY's to do the install but I imagine and install would be $400 or more. Just a guess. Her 4Runner has a JBL system and I keep reading it is different but cannot determine if I can install this unit without replacing the JBL speakers. Want to buy it. Do not want to replace speakers. It is in my cart but don't want to buy it without answering that question. It may be obvious to some but I cannot figure out how to exit an app without shutting down the whole unit. For example, if I am listening to the radio (Pioneer App) with the navigation on (CarPlay), how do I make the radio stop playing? I would think I could just touch the radio icon again to turn it off. Not sure what i am missing. YouTube and User Manual are no help. Phone audio through Apple CarPlay is amazing and Siri works great. Phone audio is much better through the truck audio system than from my phone. Microphone works great. It is mounted on my steering column and my wife could easily talk over the phone in a normal voice from the passenger seat while driving on a city street. The person on the other end said it was very clear. Excellent. Overall, I love this thing and like I said, plan to buy another one. I would not say it is an easy install and documentation is weak, but with help of YouTube it is doable if you are competent at soldering or crimping wire connections and have plenty time. ... show more

  • A useful replacement at a reasonable price point
I bought this because a foiled theif damaged the stereo in my truck. The old stereo connected to my iphone and i also had a backup camera connected to that unit. I needed both when shopping for a replacement. I had sampled carplay in a rental car and liked tje maps integration ability missing from my old stereo. Was really pleased by that even though carplay does not always work/connect to your phone as reliably as I’d hoped. What I like: The integration. Price point. Good size screen. Ease of install. It took me 30min to open up the dash and slide this unit in. That is, NOT counting witing and soldering the wireharness together. (2 hours thereall the shrink tubing and wirestripping and such) you would have to do that no matter what stereo you bought. What could be better: Only 2 things, usb port and the lack of a better physical volume control. To change the volume the control is small, flush mounted on the bezel. You have to use your eyes and your ears to adjust it. How then are u driving your car? A nice knob would get your eyes where they need to be. Ears and sense of touch could then handle the job. Carplay requires a physical connection. There is no usb on the front of the unit. I had to run an extesion cable out the back where the only usb is located and back under the center console section to the compartment seperating the passenger/driver section. Not a show stopper but I had to go get an extension and take apart more of my car interior. I would PREFER not to have to do that. Anyway I hope these perspectives help you determine how wrll this unit might fit your needs. ... show more
