  • In love with this (beginner)
Style: Medium Nib Color: Black Barrel
I compared the size to the two most common stationary. I also show this on basic printer paper for those who might not have the proper paper to see how it works on such. I recommend doing research instead into a good quality paper for fountain pens though. You can find affordable options in the communities forums on reddit etc, or youtube (the comments sections can have others finds as well). I am new but have done a lot of research to try to find my best deal for a reasonable price being a beginner unsure how I'd like the difference as many others recommend getting a cheaper option if new. I definitely have been won over and am officially going to declare a fountain pen fanatic! As I'm sure you too will once you treat yourself to this purchase. I love both of the pens I purchased so I figured I'd compare them. The two pens were both purchased on Amazon and are such, "Jinhao X159 Black Acrylic Fountain Pen # 8 Fine Nib Gold Trim for Writing and Calligraphy with Refill Ink Converter" (from the Lanxivi Store) and "PILOT Metropolitan Collection Fountain Pen, Black Barrel, Classic Design, Medium Nib, Black Ink (91107)" (from the PILOT store). I used the same ink to better review in a controlled setting. I used "Platinum Carbon Ink Bottle 60ml - Black" (Brand: PLATINUM). Be sure to get the honey browser add on because at the time of purchasing there was a great discount for a few dollars! how wonderful. Review: These pens are exactly as I had found in my research to be.The Jinhao is a bit heavier and of course, as you can see, larger. Because of this, people say those with larger hands will prefer this one and it is best used for shorter writings or signatures. The PILOT is smaller and light, perfect for longer writings and those with smaller hands (easy fix is to keep the cap on the back). Personally I have come to see their reasons in saying these things but I personally like both equally and have smaller hands. So, don't let these things deter you from just giving things a try. I got two different types of tips to see the difference. It seems both can be a bit inky but I imagine this will be a bit better once I get the proper papers to write on. Both are wonderfully smooth, glid wonderfully. I highly recommend both and you too should give different types of more inexpensive kinds a try to see what you prefer. ____The shipping for all was fast and well. ____The pictures I included are done with and without flash to best try to pick up the details. (I initially forgot to include the ink used, which is: https://www.amazon.com/Platinum-carbon-bottle-black-japan/dp/B0028MTSFQ?pd_rd_w=Wo2SR&content-id=amzn1.sym.deffa092-2e99-4e9f-b814-0d71c40b24af&pf_rd_p=deffa092-2e99-4e9f-b814-0d71c40b24af&pf_rd_r=NGC4YVT02T9K211E7CFT&pd_rd_wg=mf4HH&pd_rd_r=915e427e-74da-4bed-ae71-8d74f869ae7e&pd_rd_i=B0028MTSFQ&psc=1&ref_=pd_bap_d_grid_rp_0_4_t ) Update note: After using them for some time, I have noticed that this one takes a bit to warm up (I have to put it up right to let the ink start it) whereas my others are always ready to go and smooth. This one dries out too and has been the first I've needed to clean and in general most finicky. Its style is scratchy (as is expected for a fine nib) but I thought I'd mention that. The other glides and I think I favour the med. nib over fine despite it bleeding more. Both tend to bleed and that might be the quality of paper (I look to change and let you know. of the quality of ink, which i also plan to research into) ... show more

  • Perfect low maintenance, very fine tip fountain pen
Style: Medium Nib Color: Black Barrel
My go-to daily writer. With the EF nib, you won’t find a better fountain pen for technical/precision drawing & writing. Most fountain pens put out a lot of ink, but this one makes a nice crisp line without feathering. So easy to refill and use. Requires very little maintenance. I noticed it was finally getting dried ink and realized I’d never washed out this pen since I bought it 3.5 years ago! Yet I had no ink flow problems and it was still writing perfectly. My other fountain pens, some 4x the price, and much more finicky, require washing out every couple of refills (I use the same Waterman ink in all of my fountain pens). ... show more

  • Very impressed
Style: Medium Nib Color: Silver Barrel
So I have been recently getting into pens alot besides my interest for watches, this pen is actually my first real pen and it is seriously really good for its price I would even go as far to say the price should be higher. My father has a Mont Blanc pen that I have and this pilot pen is 100x better then the Mont Blanc, it writes so much smoother the weight is the same it has a good comfortable weight to it sleek clean design and I have nothing but the best review for the entirety of the pen and will 100% purchase different types of pens from this pilot company👍🏽 ... show more

  • Great Fountain Pen for Newbie or Nib Aficionado
Style: Medium Nib Color: Black Barrel
Just received this fountain pen and it has already had quite the workout. This Pilot Metropolitan is my fifth addition to my FP collection that consists of a Waterman Hemisphere, two vintage Parker 45 Flighters, a vintage Parker 21, and now this Metro. The Pilot Metro is probably the best "bang for the buck" modern fountain pen out there. My pen came complete with a squeeze type converter that seems to work very well. I prefer using bottled ink by Noodler's, Pelikan, Waterman, and Aurora and an entry level pen that comes with a converter was a huge plus for me. The converter was pre-installed so I filled it with Noodler's Black (Bulletproof black) and started jotting some words down on cheap paper. With the Noodler's, the nib is very smooth and the ink flows well. While listed as a medium nib, I find the Pilot Metro to be more on the "fine" side as it lays down a much narrower line than all my other medium nib pens. Very nice performance with printing as well as script and I have yet to see it miss a beat....even on down strokes which seems to be my Achilles heel when it comes to fountain pen performance. Now that I had wrote with it and was, to be quite frank, shocked at how smooth it glided across the paper, I looked at the overall construction of the pen. It is a very clean, cigar shaped pen with a sturdy pocket clip. It is roll marked with a modest "Pilot" with "Japan" underneath it and the only other marking is on the clip where the two words are repeated but engraved in a very small font. My version is the plain black model and it looks classy when capped. Taking the cap off is a simple pull (I would have preferred a twist) and then the cap can be posted securely atop the pen. The pen really stands out at this point with some engraving on the nib (Pilot M Japan)and silver highlights on the section where the nib screws into the barrel. Construction materials are brass (or so I read) with a stainless looking nib and plastic nib assembly. Overall, very nice for a thirty dollar pen and at this price point (14.99)? Pretty much unheard of. I use fountain pens in the harshest of conditions (metro Police) and this pen has performed on cheap copy paper, state issued report forms, and card stock type forms. My pens have to be sturdy as they are liable to have a M4 or scattergun banged into them while the pens ride in my breast pocket. They are apt to get rained on, scraped, dropped, and otherwise "rode hard". I demand an awful lot from my gear and I have high hopes for this Pilot Metro to be a frequent partner in my daily adventures. Time will tell but I think it will take a lot of dings before it craps out. Great pen.....insanely low price.......fast shipping.......smooth nib.....stylish in a subdued way......what's not to like? ... show more
