  • Tremendous resource for serious photography enthusiasts
Format: Paperback
I purchased this book, along with others, in advance of my brother's and my upcoming trip to Zion, Bryce Canyon and Arches National Parks. As we are both avid amateur photographers, our priority for the vacation is to shoot great pictures while in Utah. I purchased several books to learn about the parks, find places to eat and stay, etc.; however, I purchased Photographing the Southwest Vol 1 specifically for guidance on getting the best pictures on our trip. Photographing the Southwest Vol 1 is ideal for the purpose I purchased it for. The book identifies specific locations at each park that offer the best photographic opportunities. Matres provides remarkable detail in his guidance; for each spot you will learn where the spot is, what time of day is best for the lighting, what direction to face, what you will be shooting, what kind of lens to use, what filters are appropriate - even how much exposure compensation you should use given the high contrast between the shadows in the rocks and the bright sky. The author recognizes that photographers come in all shapes, sizes and physical abilities, and he provides intelligent guidance on the various trails and how challenging they are. There is a remarkable table in the back of the book that summarizes all the information for each spot, including ratings for scenic value, photographic value AND difficulty for hiking. What a terrific guide this is for photographers - With instructions like these, it's almost cheating LOL. A couple suggestions for making it even better . . . at times the instructions to reach a spot are a bit ambiguous. Matres explains why he provides very few GPS coordinates for the locations, but I don't agree with his thinking. Further, at times his references to distances are subjective. For example, he might write, "Take a short hike . . ." how short is short? Short hike by whose standards? In most cases I think the instructions are very workable but I would appreciate a little more specificity. Second, I'd like to see the instructions formatted more consistently. The instructions to reach one spot may appear in the first paragraph but be in the middle or last paragraph for the next spot. A more constructive organization from spot to spot would be helpful. Overall a little more clarity in the instructions would be helpful. These are really minor observations, that would only make an already terrific book just a little better. My last thought on the book is to consider who would benefit from it. Obviously, the serious amateur photographer will love this book. If you're shooting with an SLR or DSLR where you control things like aperture, shutter speed, etc. you'll make the most use of this information. The book's value is less clear for the average point and shooter. The average P/S camera has very basic capabilities for controlling aperture, normally no support for filters or exposure compensation, and the focal length on its lens is normally very limited, particularly with wide angles, so much of Matres' guidance won't apply. Still, the information about locations and times of day to visit would probably still make the book worthwhile. All in all, this is a great book for someone whose priority is photography. I wish I could find a guide like this for every place I visit! ... show more

  • Highly recommended for all
Format: Paperback
The title of this book can lead to an unfortunate misperception that it is primarily applicable to photographers. While it does offer some skill building tips and advice about the best locations and time of day for great photos in the best light, it is so much more than a photographic guide. Any new or experienced visitor to southern Utah will find this an essential planning guide. Its focus is on the scenery and natural environment versus support services which are left to other guidebooks. Having travelled to this area numerous times, I found many new places to visit by using this book. The photos are great and the author exhibits a very detailed knowledge of the area. The book provides detailed driving and/or hiking directions, descriptions and information necessary to access the many scenic places. The book is organized geographically by area and includes many sights that would otherwise be missed. There is a very helpful chart in the back which provides a quick rating of the scenic value and the ease/difficulty involved in getting to the various scenic features. Finally, the qualify of this softbound volume itself is very high. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Exellent general guide book - not just for photographers!
Format: Paperback
I cannot overstate the contribution of this book to a wonderful hiking trip in Southern Utah in September '09. It was actually more helpful in planning than my general guidebook (which did have its own uses, for hotels, restaurants, etc). I am just a "point and shoot" photographer, but I really wanted to see amazing things, and this book will get you there. The author gives very accurate information on how to get to the best sights: detailed directions; special considerations (like when you'll need a 4WD vehicle); time of day to go, etc. When hiking, I found his directions to be pretty near perfect (a statement like "in 20 minutes you will come to a junction" was always dead on). The gorgeous photography was inspiring as well as practically helpful in choosing what I most wanted to see. The writing is extremely well-done, in a casual tone, like a knowledgeable friend telling you about their experience. I was traveling alone and this book gave me the confidence of knowing exactly what to expect. One tip regarding a small typo: For the hike to False Kiva (which is amazing and is not found in Canyonlands park literature), the author says to walk "250 yards" from the parking area, to find the unmarked trail. The distance is much closer to 250 feet, and I believe that is what was meant. ... show more

  • Must Have Companion
Format: Paperback
I own four books in this series. Photographing Oregon, Washington, Northern California, and the Southwest pt. 1. This book is incredibly useful when planning photography trips. I was on a very short trip to a few destinations in AZ and this book was a great guide. Including information for the best places to shoot, it also gives great tips for best time of day, and season to go to these places. It includes lots of information about the requirements to hike, drive, etc. to each of these places. For me these are a must travel companion. The full color book provides lots of visual inspiration and clues as to where to set up and how to take shots in these places - an important feature if you are just traveling through an area for a brief time. This book goes beyond photography as well. I encourage my friends that are hikers/backpackers to look at these books as they often provide much better descriptions than most hiking books. Once you have found the locations you want to go, I then suggest using hiking books because this book does not include detailed maps of each location - something that is made clear in the forward of this book. This assumes that you will find the location you want to shoot, and do some further research to successfully make it in and out of your shoot. Overall love this book. ... show more
