I've decided to try my hand at different art mediums (alcohol markers, acrylic markers, paint, watercolor, oil pastels, etc) and this was my first attempt on canvas board. For a beginner, I actually liked them. I enjoyed the different texture, and I used acrylic markers for the painting in the photo. Ordered these for airbrush painting. New to this type of painting, so I needed an inexpensive canvas option to practice on. These are perfect for that. They are thin, with a nice tight canvas surface. Costing only a little over a $1.00 per canvas, these are a great deal, especially for quality. My husband is teaching a painting class at the local co-op. The kids all have art kits with all their supplies, but he does not. He does the project he is going to teach them ahead of time. He was looking for some standard canvas boards that were ready to paint and in a smaller size (like what came in their kits). These boards come ready to paint. The edges are sealed nicely. Some inexpensive canvas requires gesso to create a cohesive, easy-to-paint on canvas. These are not those: they are primed and ready for use! I'm learning watercolor and I got these boards to see what it would be like to paint on canvas. It was fun. The canvas takes watercolor well. It didn't buckle or bend. My pencil sketch erased just fine and my ink set properly just like with paper. Watercolor goes down well and lifts when I want it to. I’m picking up painting as a new hobby, so these canvas boards seemed like a great place to start practicing. At first these seemed to be nice, good surfaces to paint on. I have only used one so far, just applying acrylic paints from bottles picked up in the craft/paint section of big stores – nothing special that experienced artists would likely use. Also, I didn’t prep the board with Gesso or anything like that. But after painting the surface and allowing to dry, I was disappointed to see how much warping there was. I figured it was due to the type of paint and not having prepped the board first. But then I remembered an old painting I had done with a girls’-night-out event a couple of years ago. I pulled that out for comparison – same type of paint, no prepping, and there was no warping of that painting. The only difference is the thickness of the boards. I’ll post pictures which will hopefully demonstrate what I’m trying to describe. Bottom line – these boards are fine for practicing painting techniques that you don’t intend to hang or frame, as they get too curved to display. Maybe these would be okay with better quality paints or prepping the board first. Personally, I’ll just get thicker boards when I get better at painting. ... show more

These cotton canvas boards are perfect for artists at all levels of abilities. They accept a wide range of paints — acrylic, tempera, oil, watercolor, gouache, etc. — and are priced low enough that you are ok experimenting. They’re 8 x10 inches, so an easily manageable size to use on desktops or small easels. The surface is smooth and tightly woven, so absorb some paints differently. Good to practice on one first. These are great to have, sometimes you just want to try something and you don't want to worry about wasting materials and if by chance it turns out good, well you actually have something you can show someone. The quality is good enough to display and the price low enough to not worry about.
