  • Great portable kit for beginners and intermediate drummers
Size: Jazz Color: Jet Black
You can't beat Pearl for the combo of quality and price. I wanted a smaller kit for portability, and noticed many local drummers playing these 4-pc "bop"/jazz/jungle kits, with great sound. I didn't want the hassle of a shell kit (drums only, no stands/pedals) even though I have some spare hardware. And I own another Pearl kit (have owned others over the years), so I know the quality is there. The kit comes complete: drums, stands, cymbals, pedals, even sticks. And it's packed in an AMAZINGLY small box. Some comments on the components: You can make cheap drums sound really good if the shells are solid and the edges are flat and smooth, good angle (for contact with the heads). Pearl has solid, high-quality shells. They're poplar, not maple or birch or mahogany, but the wood type matters less wrt sound than good construction and heads. The hoops and clamps are nicely chromed and solid. One big upgrade for any low-end kit is the heads. The included ones look ok, but I replaced the tom and snare heads with Remo and Evans heads, keeping the bottom reso heads and the ones on the bass drum. I haven't tuned them yet, but the sound is pretty solid on all drums, good bass, tight snare that needs a bit of damping. Hardware is double-braced and solid. I really like the bass pedal, even though I have others And the hi-hat stand is responsive. The cymbal boom where a 2nd tom would be is a nice touch. I added a 2nd boom with a crash that is clamped to the tom mount, nice and compact. There are lock collars on the tom/cymbal mounts to make teardown/setup easy on the go. The drum sizes are great for a portable kit with great sound. the 18" shallow bass has good punch but is much smaller than a typical deeper 22" one. The 10" tom and 14" floor tom give a good sound range, and the 13" thin snare has good impact when tuned (using a moongel on it, Evans reverse dot head). Always tune the drums properly and the sound will be great on these. And they're much easier to transport than my full-sized kits. OK, the #2 big upgrade for low-end kits is the cymbals. The included brass ones are, well, usable. But you generally need bronze cymbals for good sound (B8 alloy or the higher-end B20, for example). I'm using a mix of Wuhan, Sabina, Zildjian cymbals. You might get lucky with a good-sounding brass cymbal, but go bronze (even used to save $$$). The throne is a bit small and not super sturdy, but it's surprising they even included one. I'm using one I already had. I didn't comment on the looks because that's secondary for me, but it is a nice-looking kit. I have the gloss black, nice defect free finish on the shells, and the chromed hardware is shiny Overall, you can't get a good-sounding quality compact kit for anywhere near this price. Upgrading the top (batter) drum heads and getting good cymbals makes this a nice-sounding kit at a budget price. ... show more

  • Great beginning set
Size: New Fusion Color: Jet Black
Bought for my 12 and 6 year olds to practice. Easy to assemble, looks good. Sound is good. Doesn’t take up a ton of space. Just wish we had a sound proof room🙉

  • Great drum kit!
Size: New Fusion Color: Red Wine
I have never played the drums before but always wanted to. I researched several different kits before going with Pearl. I was able to assemble them up without any instructions, I watched several youtube videos on how to tune them, that was relatively easy too. I bought drum dots to muffle any buzzing. They look and sound awesome. Very happy with my purchase. ... show more

  • Learning to Drum at Fifty-One!
Size: Rock Color: Charcoal Metall
As a music junkie, I've always been interested in all musical instruments. I thought the drums were beyond me, especially at my age. But no amount of reason can stop an old lady from pursuing her dreams right? I decided to treat myself to this kit for Christmas. When it first arrived, I admit that I thought I'd made a huge mistake. The kit is stunning, I was able to figure out how to tune the drums, etc., but I didn't have much confidence in my abilities or lack thereof. Turns out I was right to trust my initial instinct. I have been playing the kit every single day since I got it and I've been able to pick it up quite well. Apparently you can teach an old dog new tricks, as long as you're willing to be a little patient. This kit is really beautiful and professional. I've since gone and looked at kits in stores and haven't seen anything I liked any better, and at this price, you really can't go wrong. Like others have said and anyone who sells a kit will tell you, the cymbals and drum heads that come with a kit are usually pretty inferior. This kit can easily grow with you though, and I've already made a number of changes/additions. I immediately changed out the stock bass and tom drum heads with Remo heads and the snare with an Evans HD Dry. I also replaced the snare wires with PureSound Custom Pro. I purchased a telescoping cymbal stand and then bought a package of Meinl cymbals and hi-hats. The difference in sound quality between stock and upgrades is outstanding, even with lower-end cymbals. If you are getting old and creaky like me and have back problems, I highly recommend you spend the money on a solid throne because you won't want to drum for long on the stock throne unless you enjoy having a numb butt, sore tailbone and aching lower back. Likewise, your aging ears will thank you if you protect them with some Vic Firth isolation headphones. Special note: I opted for the 5 piece kit, so I have 3 floor toms. I found that having the two on the right was really awkward for me, especially in trying to learn fast fills. I ended up moving the middle tom over to the top right of my snare, so I have two floor toms there and the bass tom on the right. See the photos. First photo is the kit as originally laid out. Second and third are current setup. Bonus Cat Review: PROS: Is shiny. CONS: Is not for sits. Is loud. Is hateful. No. I write honest reviews because I count on them myself when making a decision about purchasing. If my review was helpful to you, please mark it as such. Thank you! ... show more

  • Great entry level set.
Size: New Fusion Color: Red Wine
Bought this for our 11 year old daughter since she plays in school band. It's a great set overall and sounds good. My only complaint would be the cymbals which warped quickly which is why I knocked it down to 4 stars.
