Description

Park Tool offers a full range of tools for bicycle cassette lockring removal and installation. The FR-5.2 fits 12 spline 23.4mm diameter tool fittings - the most common tool fitting found on 7-12 speed bicycle cassette lockrings, including models made by Shimano, SRAM, SunRace, SunTour, Chris King and others. Also fits Shimano disc brake lockrings with 12 internal splines, and top caps of some Rock Shox suspension fork models including Pike, Lyrik, SID, Revelation, Reba, and Paragon. Thin wall construction allows use without removal of cones and locknuts. The 1" hexagonal base can be used in conjunction with a socket, wrench, or bench vise. Heat treated alloy tool steel construction for a lifetime of use. The FR-5.2 has 12 splines that are approximately 23.4mm across at the widest point. Center bore for axle clearance is 12mm. To determine the type of rear sprocket system you have, find the tool fitting on the sprocket set. Spin the sprockets backwards. If the fitting spins with the cogs, it is a cassette system. If the tool fitting does not spin with the cogs, it is a freewheel system. If you have a multi-speed cassette, you need one of two tools. If the cassette, derailleur, or shifter are labeled with Campagnolo, the tool for you is the BBT-5/FR-11. Otherwise, you will require a tool in our FR-5.2 line. In addition to the correct tool, you will also need a method of driving it (such as an adjustable wrench or 1" socket) as well as a chain whip to hold the cassette in place as you remove the lockring. Most of the Park Tool mechanics tools are built to survive a lifetime and this cassette locking tool is no exception. This is one of the most common lock ring standards for Shimano cassettes. While Park does make some variants to this that have guide pins (offering a bit more stability) this tool is more universal and it compatible with eBike and other hubs where the axle must pass through this tool in order to slip over the rim. If you're wondering, you'll need a 1" box wrench (or similar tool/adjustable wrench) to spin this. I have a 1" craftsman that provides excellent leverage, though a nice Tekton like this: https://amzn.to/4vNJS7H It's about the same quality but cheaper. I'd pick one of these up if you don't already have one, it's a great pairing with this tool. Great stuff as always. Cheaper than a visit to the LBS and the satisfaction of working and repairing things yourself. ... show more

Simple tool for a simple task, works great

Works perfect as designed. Worried about holding it steady as you turn it? Just run the quick release skewer thru the hub and thru the tool and secure on lightly, just enough to hold the tool in place and easy all you do is turn counter clockwise to take off. Now, you'll need a tool to hold the cassette still from rotating as you loosen the retaining ring. Use a chain whip tool to hold to the cogs or a hooked cog wrench, either will work, but you'll need one or the other to take off a cassette from the wheel. No worry about a wrench, just use a big crescent wrench if need be. The nut is 1 inch, or you can use a 1 inch socket and wrench like I did. It's not on super tight, so remember when you use this tool to install the retaining ring again ... light on the torque! There are "bumps" as you tighten. From first contact, tighten about 4 bumps ... or use a torque wrench and follow the instructions on torque. No centering fitting needed really, just hold in place with the quick release skewer nut! The usual excellent Park Tool quality. This is one to have in your tool kit, as it works with 80% of the freehubs you're likely to encounter.
