  • It’s small and it works (unlike the chain breakers in the multi-tools)
This little gem works great. I have some very good, name brand, multi-tools that include a “chain breaker” except, they don’t work since you can’t get enough leverage on a tiny tool. This park tool chain breaker isn’t much larger but it absolutely works. I personally tried it 3 times on an old chain (same chain that the multi tools could not break without using a plier to gain more leverage). This park tool Works like a champ. Zero issues. It’s already in my bike bag along with a spare quick link. ... show more

  • It's Park Tool so it works
This is really only for emergency use on a bike trip. Too small to easily grip (my wife simply could not remove a bushing rivet). It does work if your hands are strong, or you could bring a bench vise on your bike trip to clamp it into. Better instructions are needed for how to loosen a link that is replaced, then binds. I don't expect this will last for many years, and that's probably why Park Tool sells replacement pin drivers for it. When you need one, you really need one, so it might as well be a good brand. ... show more

  • Gets the job done for a great price
Performed exactly as I needed it to. I gave a 4 out of 5 on ease of use, because it takes a little bit of toying around with grips to find the right way to get enough force on it to push the chain pins out. And pushing the chain pins out took quite a bit of force (as you'd hope). But I've ridden roughly 100 miles since changing it and its working perfectly, and the tool feels study enough to feel like it'll last forever, but it also small enough that on longer distance rides I can pop it in my bag with no worries about taking up very much space or weighing me down. Tips: -When pushing the pins out of a connection you want to connect again after, be careful not to push it all the way out. Ideally push out enough that you can take the link apart, but that the pin is still in the outer bit. If you push it all the way out then it seems like it would be very difficult to put back in (I did this and tried for a little bit and just decide to go to another link). So be careful when getting close to that point (when I got to this point I would do this by tightening it like a 1/4 or 1/2 turn and taking it out and seeing if it seperates). -Make sure you use the link loosener. The directions that come with it gave two different options for putting the chain (one for pushing pins in / pushing pins out, and another for loosening links). What I didn't realize is that when I put the pins in that they were very tight and needed to be loosened. So don't overlook this step. ... show more

  • Works as described.
Metal construction seems sturdy. Ive only used it to pop one link so far. Does take a bit of muscle to pop the link.

  • Quick and easy way to pop off links
I've been slowly building my arsenal of bike tools and always keep coming back to Park Tool Park Tool is a bit more expensive than some other brands but I haven't had any issues with them and the same goes for this chain tool. It's small so you can store it easily in your bike bag if you carry an extra chain. You need to use a bit of strength to pop the link but other than that, it works great and gets the job done ... show more

  • Works just as well as the larger one
No need to buy the more expensive one unless you work at a shop. This works just fine.

  • Great for a novice bike mechanic.
I've been riding for years, but I don't really know the first thing about bike maintenance. Well, now that I've been reading up I do, and it sounds like there is a lot I have been neglecting over the last few thousand miles. I guess that speaks to the build quality of Trek. Anyway. Last month I went through a pretty big overhaul, replacing pretty much all of the important components: shift and brake cables, cassette, chain, and possibly the most important: bar tape. I do _all_ of my own automotive repair so I elected to purchase the tools to do the bike work myself as I plan to ride for years to come. I purchased a Shimano chain which necessitates a chain tool of this variety. Some chains use a master link which can be installed/removed with pliers; but Shimano uses a 'master pin' meaning they ship the chain as an opened loop (just a length of chain), and to close the loop you use this tool to press the pin to connect the ends together. The tool works great for this purpose; its small, sturdy, easy to use, and includes instructions. My only minor complaint is that the tool doesn't include a notch or lever of some sort to break off the remaining chain nub that MUST be removed before the chain can use. It would be quite difficult to fix a chain on a ride without an additional tool in your bag. Overall though, I'm very pleased with this. ... show more
