This is one of a handful of films from this period of saturated color and the gorgeous cinematography of Jack Cardiff. Many of these films incorporate within their story and script elements of literature, art, mystery and timeless love that transcends death. This one delivers all. Ava Gardner's character is beautiful and untouchable in this film, her heart is as cold as the statues she caresses, her attention as bloodthirsty as the bullfights of her ex-lover... one of many we discover. Her requirements of a lover are that she be given all, and of course, no one can deliver. The story begins in one of these trite vacation atmospheres - playground of the very rich dilletantes. We are told she was a singer - not a very good one by her own admission. We are treated to Gardner's real singing voice, which is not cultured, but unique and husky (too bad they didn't let her sing all her own stuff in SHOWBOAT - it's the right voice for that character). She seems to get by on her beauty, which is immense, and her capriciousness. She is not particularly likable, but she doesn't pretend to be better than she is, and that is interesting. Then a mysterious boat appears, with a sad handsome man who is working on a painting of Pandora... which bears a resemblance to her. At this point the movie moves from the mundane into the magical, with tormented love at its most operetic. This movie was an artistic enterprise, with high emotions, high risk. If F.Scott Fitzgerald's characters interbred with Greek mythology, this is the child they would create. It has some faint awkward moments of voiceover and explanation, but it is magical in it's look, and moreover, it is, like many other Jack Cardiff films, simply one-of-a-kind. The perfect rainy day movie. Very watchable.

Albert Lewin, the writer/director of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman, had a distinctive style that was unique in Hollywood. His surrealist references, the choreography-like blocking of his characters, and his fascination with existential/psychological themes may have been more obvious in his films of the 1940's (The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Moon and Sixpence) but they are all present here as well. Blended with the lush sensuality of the Spanish Coast, mirrored in his heroine, Pandora, they are less obvious and more richly illustrated. Lewin was never interested in a naturalistic style of film making; he lets the theme dominate the characters, moving them like chess pieces toward their fate. In this case, the theme is human passion. In the opening scenes we are introduced to the theme through the suicide-for-love of one of Pandora's suitors counterpointed by the impassioned flamenco dancing of La Pillina. To live or die for passion: that is the question. Each of the male characters is driven by their need to possess Pandora and each works it out --and pays for it--in different ways. The Dutchman is the wild card here because he must deal with a fate that has left him with human passions but demands that he transcend his humanity in order to die. Pandora is more than a mere catalyst for the male characters. Unlike most heroines of the early 50's, she is given a willful personality and left to work out her own fate. Which of the men will she choose and why? If you are looking for a piece of romantic escapism, this film works on that level but to look at it in this way is to miss its richness and the challenging questions raised by the theme. References to the work of artists Man Ray, De Chirico, Max Ernst, Marcel Duchamp and the Surrealist school abound. Aesthetics, philosophy, art, and life are intertwined. Buy the film and watch it. Then peel back the layers with Susan Felleman's book "Botticelli in Hollywood: The Films of Albert Lewin" and watch the film again. It's challenging, intriguing, awkward, entertaining, and a sensual treat.

What can I say....Ava Gardner is so stunning to look at that sometimes I lose track of a storyline. The beauty of owning a movie is that I can go back and see what I may have glossed over. In this case the storyline is rather depressing but still can't stop watching simply because Ava and James Mason are mesmerizing. In chronicliing the legend of the Flying Dutchman the writers have woven and great story of fantasy, longing and finally redemption. Great movie...Ava even gets to sing a little and although not a great songstress she can carry a tune and has a soft pleasant voice.

This is an "old fashioned" feature film story with a definite beginning, middle and end. Previously rerun on TV in b/w. Now richly restored here in Technicolor. A kind of dreamy, mysterioso masque, thankfully not realistic at all. James Mason and Ava Gardner are truly fun to experience here. Definitely worth watching, recalling perhaps a gentler, more romantic time that never really happened at all, and therein lies it's magic. Definitely worth watching, as long as you don't fancy yourself a hard realist.

Unfortunately the DVD described on amazon.com Marketplace was not the product I received. I specifically ordered the 2010 restored version as pictured on amazon.com Marketplace, but I received an earlier version of the DVD instead. If I had known I was going to receive the earlier version, I could have ordered it at a lower price. The movie itself was wonderful, though. The film was beautifully photographed and Ava Gardner looked absolutely gorgeous.

PANDORA AND THE FLYING DUTCHMAN is one of my mother's favorite films. She has always told us how she and her friends sat at repeated showings of the film when it was first released, mesmerized by Ava Gardner's beauty and by the film's romantic atmosphere. I saw it in Paris when it was rereleased in the early 80's and was totally involved in the experience of seeing PANDORA. Took my friends to see it (GILDA and LEAVE HER TO HEAVEN were playing around the same time, all three in fine prints, so we were treated to a true festival of Hollywood late 40's/early 50's glamour, with three of film history's most beautiful women gracing the screen: Gardner, Hayworth, Tierney) and they were equally impressed. PANDORA is in the fantasy tradition of PORTRAIT OF JENNIE, THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR, SOMEWHERE IN TIME and some other films. I particularly like the genre, especially when it is treated in such a delicate, charming way. The cinematography by Jack Cardiff is breathtaking, extracting great effect from the film's location at beautiful Tossa del Mar, on Spain's Costa Brava. Ava Gardner was a real screen goddess and stood above all parameters for judging actor's at work. Like Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Rita Hayworth, Elizabeth Taylor, Gina Lollobrigida, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and very few others, she just had TO BE, she didn't need TO ACT. I treasure this film and encourage people to see it always that I meet someone who is able to enjoy it. A classic.

"Pandora and the Flying Dutchman" (Blu-ray) is Ava Gardner advanced several years from "The Killers" (1946) where she starred with Bert Lancaster. (Lines from 1949s "On The Town" the sailors want a date and "it doesn't have to be with Ava Gardner"). This is the story of Pandora an American torch singer as a focus of the English ex-pat community in a small Spanish fishing village. One feature of this edition is an "Extra" look at that community and the statue of Ava erected in her honor after production. This film is a combination or culmination of of two myths: one Greek and one Nordic set 1950 Spain. Rather than address the plot and characters of the film, the biggest difference for me having seen the movie on TCM is the wonderful restoration to the film print on the one hand and the incredible vividness of the Blu-ray edition on the other. The excellent Technicolor (Kino, British production) brings alive the village, its people, James Mason and Gardner. Should you wish to participate in this fiction, you will find all of the passions stirred on a spectacular stage of archetypal myth.
