Description

Slow down and embroider your way through the changing seasons with the beautiful debut book from embroidery artist and rising star Emillie Ferris. Needlepainting, also known as thread painting or silk shading, is a form of embroidery that creates a realistic, lifelike effect using a single strand of thread and one simple stitch – the 'long and short' stitch. You can create gorgeous colour gradients, magical details and flowing stitch directions that are perfect if you want to embroider flora and fauna. In this richly illustrated step-by-step guide, self-taught embroidery artist Emillie Ferris shows you how to pick up a needle and thread in the same way as a paintbrush to create strokes of colour and bring images to life on fabric.Inspired by nature and the changing seasons, Emillie has created five new and exclusive patterns for the book, four that reflect each season in turn and one special design that brings the natural year together into one showstopper embroidery. This book is the culmination of all of Emillie’s skills and years of experience in this wonderful, meditative art form. Each design has around 60 detailed step-by-step photos, showing every stage of the process, so that even complete beginners can follow along and create beautiful embroideries. If you have been considering learning the art of needlepainting but are unsure where to start, then this book is for you!Not only are the embroideries sublime, but the book itself is a thing of beauty, with incredible attention to detail – from the exquisite photography to the lavish hardback binding, making it a real treasure for the book lover. Plus, high quality iron-on transfers at the back of the book allow you to transfer the designs directly onto fabric to get started straight away.In this book Emillie generously shares her tried and tested tips and techniques, including advice on materials, transferring designs onto fabric, and fully illustrated explanations of the stitches and skills needed. The five in-depth projects draw on Emillie’s love of nature, including motifs that she is best known for such as flowers, foliage, bees and fungi. This beautiful book will become an indispensable and treasured guide allowing you to paint with thread the Emillie Ferris way. Read more

  • Visually stunning!
Although my embroidery skills aren’t quite at the level required for this book yet (I’m still very much a beginner), I’m confident that I’ll get there soon! The directions are clear, and the beautifully laid-out photos make everything feel approachable and inspiring. The designs are stunning, and the level of detail is truly appreciated—it’s the perfect motivation to keep practicing and learning. Embroidery is such a beautiful art form, and this book showcases that perfectly. Highly recommend it for anyone looking to take their skills to the next level! Happy to have it on my shelf! ... show more

  • Top grade book!
This is the most beautiful little book in my collection. It resides on my coffee table, to be seen by all. The writing is clear and concise; have found only one spellchecker error half way through. The simplicity of the patterns, the stitches and the authors descriptions make it the perfect reference for beginners and anyone who loves embroidery and/or hardcover books. ... show more

  • Beautiful nature projects to embroider
I can’t say enough about this beautiful book! Even if you don’t enjoy doing detailed hand embroidery, this book would be worthy of gracing a coffee table- but if you’re up for doing the projects, you’re in for a treat. Emillie’s chosen subjects are a Robin, a sunflower, a bee, a mushroom, & a dandelion. She has iron on transfer pages at the back for each project- with or without background stitching options. If you choose to use these, I would make a copy to keep with the book in case you want to new-do that project someday. The only thing I don’t like about the transfer pages is some of them have filled in black areas that may be hard to cover with your stitches. Her instructions are very well written & have pictures to help each step along the way. For those of you familiar with Trish Burr, I would put Emillie’s work up there with hers, & I don’t say that lightly, b/c Trish is my gold standard for detail & beauty in learning to do surface embroidery. ... show more

  • Beautiful book
The media could not be loaded. Beautiful book. I like how it has transfers at the end you can use. I can’t wait to try these out!

  • A lovely embroidery technique
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is beautifully published right from the hard cover and is easy to open flat to read. It is written by a young woman from the UK who has an easy and friendly manner. The verbiage is such that it seems she is sitting next to you giving you step by step instructions. It truly is step by step too. The format is such that each instruction has a number and a corresponding picture of the referenced instruction. The photography is very close up so the stitches are almost magnified and easy to see what the author is instructing. There are 5 designs in the book: dandelion, sunflower, mushroom, robin, bumble bee. All of them are step by step instructions right down to the tiniest detail. They start with less challenging and go on to more challenging. If you follow Emillie’s directions, with practice, you will be successful. This technique is not a quick hobby that can be whipped up in a few hours. Relax, enjoy the process. It is not an especially expensive hobby. A piece of fabric, some needles, hoop and thread and you are good to go. This technique is done with one single thread in order for the colors to blend well. Emillie show you where to make the color changes and what colors she has used (DMC #s) for her projects. You can use those colors or pick your own colors. So, slow down and enjoy the process. I would definitely recommend this book for someone who wants to learn this technique. Good job, Emillie! ... show more

  • Thank Goodness I Read the Reviews about the DMC Color Numbers
I'm working on the bee as a present for a friend. Luckily before I received the book I read reviews and a subreddit where people said that the thread color numbers in the instructions do not match the actual colors in the gorgeous finished piece on the cover and in the book. So just look at the photos and if you like how it looks, ignore the directions for the colors and pick your own colors of floss. That's what I'm doing and except for taking a whole evening to pick five greens from my ridiculously large collection, it's not a big deal. The colors in the directions ( for the greens at least) are much more muted and somewhat muddy. I've seen photos of examples where people used the colors listed in the book and the finished pieces are much more muted overall. But the book is so, so pretty, the instructions very good, and the designs are absolutely lovely. Plus the author seems like someone you would love to hang out with. ... show more

Absolutely gorgeous patterns and a gorgeous book. I went to her shop to order the bee needle minder. I'm so excited to see what I can paint with thread.

  • Beautiful book.
It's beautiful. It gives step by step instructions. It gives iron on transfers. I plan to use the transfers multiple times by tracing and transferring myself. I got the book because I have a stack of embroidery hoops the right size.
