It can be daunting trying to find the right paddle in a market where there’s hundreds of choices, and Nicol’s P-One makes that choice a lot easier. I was looking for a modern paddle with lots of spin, as well as touch, without costing several hundreds of dollars. This one fit the bill! Before even unboxing it, I was greeted with an unboxing experience I haven’t had with any other paddle yet. The P-One comes in a beautiful, solid feeling hard magnetic box that just tells you the paddle will be premium. After opening it, I chose Design 2, you’re greeted with an elegant and understated design. This was very nice, as most other paddles seem horribly tacky and cheap with just their color and graphic choices alone - not the P-One. Before even swinging the paddle, the feel of the construction is rock solid without being heavy. It doesn’t feel flimsy, the weight out of the box is just right, and swinging the air for a forehand drive was effortless with its increased aerodynamic efficiency. The width of the handle was perfect for my hands (5’11” man) and the increased length made me feel more secure in my freedom of placement and grip, and I even had some good two handed backhands. But I had to test it out on the court, as that is all that really matters. In short, I was pleasantly surprised in a lot of ways that makes this paddle, to me, very unique and a great performer. Off the bat, the paddle has a quiet, deadened, and solid sound for even very hard hits. It’s definitely the quietest and most muted paddle in my collection; it doesn’t sound annoying or standoffish in that way. Even the feel when hitting it, both in serves and dinks, felt pretty muted for me. There was definitely pop and the sweet spot was very large, but the response when hitting a shot transmitted little vibration to my wrist and arm without feeling unresponsive or dead. The P-One also felt great in my hand, as its balance and perfect 8.2 oz weight made me feel right at home to hit any type of shot I wanted to. In a way, the power delivery of the P-One was extremely understandable and easy to adapt to, as it felt very linear. One of the best features about this paddle is definitely its raw carbon face and gritty finish. For me, it’s a game changer. Regardless if you’re hitting line drives or small dinks, the amount of spin you can impart on this ball is wild. I was getting top spin on my serves like never before. Because of that, I was getting more points, as my friends would either have to awkwardly lob it back to set up for a nice third shot or just flat out not return it. Knowing I can impart a lot of spin and a precise amount of spin with the feel of the paddle is such an amazing feat of the P-One. Even though this paddle is more geared towards power than control, as it’s elongated and not as wide, dinks felt incredibly controlled and firefights were also very easy with the P-One because of its great balance. Overall, I think the Nicol P-One is a great paddle for its price in its looks and its performance.
