    • Ourlife kids camera: the connector is the weak link.

My grandson has one of these. He loved it, but it died on him, and he asked me to have a look at it. I realized it had died because the battery was dead. The battery was dead because the cable connector had broken off the PCB due to a fatal flaw in the PCB design. Everything these days uses microminiature electronics, including input and output connectors. This camera uses a surface mount miniature connector for battery charge power and, I assume, to download photos. This connector is soldered down to very small fine traces on the PCB. With any stress on the connector body while plugging in or removing the cable, stress is put on the very fine (5 to7 mil traces, I estimate) PCB traces, and on my grandson’s camera, the traces were pulled off the PCB, then torn off, such that the connection was broken, the battery was not being recharged, the battery discharged; the camera was dead. While it was possible to fix the PCB, it would require a very small soldering iron specifically designed for surface mount PCBs, and a very steady hand, neither of which I have. At the price of this camera, it is less expensive and trouble to purchase him a new camera, which I did. We will show him the old camera Connector and PCB, and explain that he must be very careful with the connector. We will see how well that works. The manufacturer could easily have prevented this issue with β€˜proper’ design of the PCB, and perhaps a better design of the connector and how the connector is held and kept from moving, but they did not. After all, how many phones these days are built and used with microminiature connectors? I give the camera an overall score of 3 stars, although the score should perhaps be lower given this flaw in the design. ... show more

Bought this for my daughter in April of last year and it’s been a great little camera. Takes good pictures in and out of the water and has a lot of features and some games. It just recently stopped working and I reached out to the company and they quickly responded and sent us a new one.

    • Great little camera for young photographers!

I got two of these cameras for my 5 and 3 y.o. grandsons who love making photos. The older one, in particular, is fascinated with my DSLR as well as iphone photography so I was looking for a camera to suit his early interest in photography and to be simple enough for his younger brother to use at a 3 y.o. level. This little camera packs a big punch with all the features to keep the squirts happily clicking. It's quick for the adults to learn and teach tiny fingers so the kids are off and running independently. One camera arrived charged with SD card formatted; the other required I do that. Instruction guide is clear and easy to follow. Selfie mode is popular and waterproof cases work nicely for taking the camera out in the snow, not only actual underwater. I am not in the household where the kids live so I can't speak to any problems that have surfaced except for one: the pre-charged camera appeared to not re-charge (USB to computer) - i.e. the red charging light did not blink, but when checked, it actually had charged. We will keep an eye on that. All reviews raved about customer service so I am not worried. The cameras arrived quickly with all their accessories. The 5 y.o. wanted to try out the mini-tripod which seems a bit wonky and may have a broken leg. The only minor negative with the camera is that it does have four pre-installed games. (not what I was looking for) How can a 5 y.o. recognize a games icon as we moved through the menu?!?! Well, he did, but I truly believe he is more fascinated with taking photos than playing games, much to my delight. He has already begun setting up his toys to make still life photos! The camera also has video capability as well as a variety of frames and color modes which will be explored in due time. While these have an internal battery which, once it weakens and can no longer hold a charge, will not last forever. Once gone, the camera will be kaput. At $39.99, it's still a wonderful investment in kids' independent creativity! Full disclosure, I purchased camera cases at $20 each which I would not recommend to others. What worked better was giving each kid a fabric zippered case (mine were from long ago international flights) to store all the accessories. The squirts still love the hard cases to open/close, zip/unzip for special stuff, just not the cameras. No question, I recommend these as gifts for 3 y.o. and up. ... show more
