  • Very well-designed light weight pack
Size: 65L Color: Mallard Green
At first, I didn't like this pack. I was used to packs with more external pockets and one more horizontal division with zippered entry than this one offers. Also, a hard external frame that allows the pack to stand up. But I got to love this pack for its many thoughtful features and would recommend it over more "complicated packs". The hip belt is wide and supportive. You need to remove weight from your shoulders and place it down low on your hips, otherwise you'll get tired much sooner. This allows you to hike further and possibly quicker. It's a must-have item for any serious backpacker. I did wish the hip belt buckle were different. It seemed tricky to use at times and was sometimes hard to tighten. I wish it had a "pre-set" clasp that could be custom-adjusted to your hip size. The two buckle pieces then come together and simply lock in front, instead of the webbing woven through an "over-under arrangement". Each side of the hip belt has a zippered pocket large enough to hold some small items like flashlight, insect repellent, water purification tablets, keys, etc. I was glad they were there. The sides each have a mesh pocket perfect for a Liter water bottle. There is a pocket/flap area for a water bladder, but I didn't use it. There is a top flap pocket which holds flat or fairly small things like maps, guides, flashlight, compass, etc. The main compartment holds quite a bit and the string closure device works very well. Hold the little tab and pull and it opens wide. Squeeze the small locking device and pull the string and it tightens the load securely. This section held my 2 man tent, sleeping bag, clothes and food. A zippered section 2/3 of the way down has a "floating" floor, which also allows entry of trekking pole, etc. This section works well for mess kit, stove, fuel, etc. You really want to put heavier items down as low as possible in the pack. At the very bottom is a small zippered compartment to hold the waterproof pack cover. I never used it, but did try to once, only to discover that if you have anything attached to the outside, like a rolled-up foam sleeping pad, the cover won't work. The pack is very water resistant anyway, and even though we got poured on numerous times, my sleeping bag and clothes stayed dry. There are a number of external attachment points. As mentioned, I attached a lightweight foam sleeping pad. There is an excellent mesh back support that allows air to flow behind you, keeping you a bit cooler. Very nice! The shoulder straps are adjustable in height (location on the pack) as well as overall length and have a cross-chest strap that really helps to stabilize the load. This fits torso length 17-22. Measure from top of hip bones to base of neck. This range covers "small" to "tall". For more info search: "backpack torso length measurement". The pack is rugged, easy to use, has a grab handle and yes, it does stand up (when fully loaded) :) I really enjoyed using it and soon forgot any misgivings I might have had earlier as it earned my respect and appreciation with its many good qualities. All of the zippers worked really well. I never had any jams. Pricing varies and I bought this earlier in the season (mid-May) before demand firmed up the price and paid $123 delivered. Thanks Amazon! I really like the green color vs. black. I recommend this item and would buy it again. If this review helped you in any way, please indicate that. Thanks! ... show more

  • Great pack- smart and simple design
Size: 65L Color: Midnight Blue
I purchased two of these for my teenage sons. We needed a pack that would grow with them and not break the bank. These packs were perfect and I’m wondering where they have been all my life. It’s everything you need and nothing you don’t. Osprey is always great but these are just so smart and simple. The harness adjustment is so quick and easy. Initially I was lamenting that there was no front shove it pocket but turns out we didn’t really need it. The side mesh pockets are nice and large and the pack is big enough that everything else fits inside. I have a higher end Osprey for myself that I bought a few years ago and if I had to buy a pack now I would just get the Rook 65. Easily big enough for a week long trip if not longer. The built in rain cover was a great feature. Very light weight and comfortable; buckles/straps/ zippers durable. My boys are 5’7” 135lbs and 5’8” 115lbs and we got the medium for both and that was just right. Plenty of room to grow. Both boys were very complimentary of the pack. ... show more

  • First Impressions- I'd buy it again.
Size: 50L Color: Black
Excellent value, price point It's not perfect and I prefer a no frills top loader with minimal zippers and compartments- this pack is not too overdone. That said, the zippered compartment for sleeping bag access is not necessary as is the divider inside, at least for me. Between the 3 sets of adjustments most average size men should be able to find a nice hip belt sweet spot. First thing, I got rid of the rain cover. I use contractor bags inside and a Poncho over everything on the outside. So far, I haven't noticed some of the issues others are complaining about. But it was a short hike with light load. On a 3-5 day hike, I'll have room to spare in this pack. Seems fine to me. ... show more

  • Great for Scouts Backpacking
Size: 50L Color: Midnight Blue
Purchased for my 8th grader scout who was going backpacking for the first time. It forced him to carefully choose what to pack since its slim and close to the back. But still plenty of room IMO, especially just for weekend trips. He’s taken it out twice and it still looks brand new. It’s great quality. Very pleased with our purchase, and will consider this brand for other future backpacking or hiking purchases. ... show more

  • Great bag with two tiny flaws
Size: 50L Color: Black
The bag is comfortable, has a nice capacity, and adequate attachment points for other gear. There are two small flaws though that prevent it from getting a full five star rating. 1. The zipper on the attic pouch is on the wrong side -- it's facing you rather than facing the back of the backpack. This means that you can't have your friends grab something out of it while hiking, and when you go into it yourself, you can't "flip" the attic up to keep things from spilling out. Rooting around in the attic to find something small is needlessly inconvenient because of this. 2. The floor separating the main compartment from the sleeping bag compartment cannot be completely removed or stowed out of the way. If you want to use the full capacity of the bag for other items and carry your sleeping bag on the outside, you'll always find this flap getting in your way near the bottom of the bag. Otherwise an awesome bag with plenty of space, good attachment points for external stuff, convenient pockets on the hipbelt, and excellent ventilation with the bulk of the pack held away from your body. ... show more
