  • Landscape photos & ideas.
Format: Spiral-bound
Good book for landscape oil painters.

  • A very good book for all levels of artist
Format: Spiral-bound
I’m a longtime professional artist and I Purchased this book and read it cover to cover and found it to be very instructive many of the things I already knew, but they were certainly a reinforcement of techniques. I would be very surprised if any artist wouldn’t get something from this book and for newer artists, it will be very valuable. ... show more

  • Great Book, great condition
Format: Spiral-bound
I bought the spiral bound used, and it’s amazing! I originally got this book at the library and the information was highly worth purchasing a copy for my collection. The author has a clear and knowledgeable understanding of oils and her surroundings. The instruction and advice is clear and easy to follow, and all images and examples are done by the author/artist. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is considering a purchase. ... show more

  • A nice paced book with helpful information
Format: Spiral-bound
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love spiral bound art books. They always get the first star from me automatically. This book did not need a free star however; it is a well thought out work with much useful information in a tight, neat package. I find it a pleasure to go back to and refresh my memory on various points. The information on color appealed to me greatly. The transparent oil pigments information was very helpful and has me researching further. The color was good to very good throughout the book. The sequence that information is presented is very good. It is not long winded but rather to the point. It moves along to my satisfaction. I would like to see more art related books using this format. I'd particularly like to see one dedicated to color, color mixing and the exact pigments or products used to do it. A handbook of this nature would be invaluable to students and teachers alike. I will recommend this book to artists at all levels of accomplishment. It is a keeper. ... show more

  • Great plein air painter's book!
Format: Spiral-bound
I've been painting outside for a couple years and this book really addresses the important issues. Right now I am studying her approach to learning to be really aware of values. She makes it easy to get a real grasp on seeing that. Ms Tolley has a tremendous knowledge of plein air painting and is very generous in sharing. For example when painting water, paint the reflections first because they will likely change soon. She gives great detail as to her approach. The spiral easily allows you to open to a certain page and just lay the book flat. The book has a plasticized cover so you could actually take it into the field and study it while you paint. I really like her basic palette and I feel like I am making significant steps forward in remembering color mixtures because of her approach. She covers the basics and way beyond. I am learning so much! ... show more

  • Oil Painter's Solution Book - Landscapes
Format: Spiral-bound
Of the 63 art books in my library, this is the best I've run into. It's to the point with skilled illustrations. By isolating one principle at a time and giving examples, it makes it easy for the reader to grasp the issue. It also isn't full of self-serving comments. Too many art books go into the soul searching and emotional aspect of painting. But not all people the same feelings, and this makes the verbiage unnecessary. Another plus is the binding. The ring binding means you don't have to crack the book spine to keep it open. This book is perfect for the artist who wants to-the-point instruction that includes problem solving. I'm recommending it to the students in my classes. Frankly, it's the best I've seen. ... show more

  • Perfect book for beginners and intermediate plein air painters
Format: Spiral-bound
Very nice book. Good for beginning to intermediate. Advanced/professional may find some things too. Love the binding. Nice presentation, beautiful artwork as examples. Good for plein air painters especially. I think that is the authors forte.

  • But I took a chance on this one and really like the way the author presents art concepts
Format: Paperback
There are so many art books it's hard to decide which to buy, especially if you can't see the contents, and most of them generally cover the same topics. But I took a chance on this one and really like the way the author presents art concepts: materials, composition and design, tonal value, color and light, techniques, and demonstrations. I think painting is mostly about doing, and I didn't really want a lot of theory, but l learned a lot and it gave me useful ideas and techniques I could really use. She also has lots of step-by-step demonstrations, AND I actually like the style of the painting examples. It's a smaller, high-quality book. I found it surprisingly useful (and not too much text). ... show more
