Format: Spiral-bound
Of the 63 art books in my library, this is the best I've run into. It's to the point with skilled illustrations. By isolating one principle at a time and giving examples, it makes it easy for the reader to grasp the issue. It also isn't full of self-serving comments. Too many art books go into the soul searching and emotional aspect of painting. But not all people the same feelings, and this makes the verbiage unnecessary. Another plus is the binding. The ring binding means you don't have to crack the book spine to keep it open. This book is perfect for the artist who wants to-the-point instruction that includes problem solving. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love spiral bound art books. They always get the first star from me automatically. This book did not need a free star however; it is a well thought out work with much useful information in a tight, neat package. I find it a pleasure to go back to and refresh my memory on various points. The information on color appealed to me greatly. The transparent oil pigments information was very helpful and has me researching further. The color was good to very good throughout the book. The sequence that information is presented is very good. It is not long winded but rather to the point. It moves along to my satisfaction. I would like to see more art related books using this format. I'd particularly like to see one dedicated to color, color mixing and the exact pigments or products used to do it. A handbook of this nature would be invaluable to students and teachers alike. I have been a decorative painter for 15 years and wanted a new medium to paint in and chose oil in landscapes. I purchased this book as a new to oil landscape painter, needing answers to questions on basic painting techniques. This book does that, it's not a book to sit and read, maybe at first, but to refer to when a question arises and its answers are simple, with pictures to illustrate and a spiral back to lay flat. It also discusses color usage which can be confusing, but it simplifies it and is easy to apply. I will have this book alongside as I paint. Thank you ... show more

I’m a longtime professional artist and I Purchased this book and read it cover to cover and found it to be very instructive many of the things I already knew, but they were certainly a reinforcement of techniques. Very nice book. Good for beginning to intermediate. Advanced/professional may find some things too. Love the binding. Nice presentation, beautiful artwork as examples. Good for plein air painters especially. I think that is the authors forte.

I bought this book because of the art work I have seen in the past by the author. I am a very big fan of her landscapes. They are wonderful. I am not a fan of how-to art books. Most seem to be written by artists looking to improve their C.V. Tolley's book is a nice suprise. There was not any superfluous info. The topics are presented with out b.s., in other words, she gets to the point. On everything from composition to color selection. The lay out is very clear and the design of the book is nice in that it is a hard bound spiral. Nice touch. The book is a little smaller than I like, but it still works. The best how-to book is still Richard Schmid's Alla Prima, but this one will add alot to ones quiver. ... show more
