  • A great gardening knife
Style: Original
I'm using this gardening knife to dig up individual daylily sprouts with their tubers. I love it! It's much easier to use than my trowel to get deeper into the soil, and the width means I'm not pulling up heavy, cumbersome amounts of soil every time. The blade has withstood angled prying motions nicely so far. It's sharp enough to cut through softer roots, though denser, more established roots may require some more effort. I've also used this to shave usable dirt off the bottom of sod pieces while converting some of my grass lawn into flower beds. The measurements along the blade have been very useful. Every use I've come up with for this knife has saved me time versus using traditional gardening tools. I'm thinking about buying another one to have on hand because I like it so much. One word of caution, this knife is very sharp. I absentmindedly brushed my finger along the edge while removing clay-heavy, sticky soil from the blade, and I cut my finger. I'm totally fine, just remember this is a knife, it's sharp, and it's even sharper than it looks. Wait until soil dries on the blade, then use a plastic bristle brush to remove soil. (Or, just pay attention and don't run your finger along the edge like I did.) Maybe even wear cut gloves (the kind you'd use in a restaurant while cutting food) when you're cleaning this, if you really want to be careful. With regular use, as long as you don't directly touch the edges of the blade, you're unlikely to cut or hurt yourself. ... show more

  • Very sturdy knife
Style: Original
For those who have issues with the stickers leaving glue on the sheath, itโ€™s no big deal. The glue was on the sheath when the stickers were removed but all it took was about 20 seconds of firm rubbing with my thumb and the glue rolled up into a sticky little ball. The ball came right up and there were no traces of the glue left on the sheath. No acetone, no alcohol or any other solvent required. The product is very nice and heavy duty. The sheath could be considered a little cheap but for the overall price it canโ€™t be beat. I would definitely purchase again. ... show more

  • My first hori hori.
Style: Original
Ignore the Vine Voice badge here, I paid cash for my hori hori. I'm back into gardening after a long absence. I need good, strong, functional tools. Few things infuriate me like a cheap tool that doesn't work, or falls apart. I took a chance on this digging tool. The photos don't do it justice. When you pick this thing up, if looks and feels much like a survival knife. I mean, it's hefty! The smooth blade is quite sharp, and the serrated edge is just as sharp. This tool is going to do some serious digging, chopping, and prying! The only downside I see, is that the metal tang doesn't extend all the way through the wooden handle. You can't use the butt end as a hammer - or not for very long, anyway. You will be replacing the handle if you do much of that. Stainless steel (Japanese stainless steel) means it won't rust if abused, and not cleaned immediately. I don't generally give five stars to products I test. This hori hori is exceptional, so I made an exception. ... show more

  • Great Hori-Hori
Style: Original
First, let me get this out of the way: The sheath is pretty crummy. I knew that before ordering, however. I could have ordered either the same Nisaku hori-hori with an upgraded sheath, or one of Nisaku's pricier variants with somewhat better sheaths, but didn't want to spend the extra money just for an upgraded sheath with this hori-hori, and I don't see the value in the so-called premium hori-hori variants. I can easily fab my own sheath from either cordura or leather. My wife and I have used a hori-hori for years. We currently have a Barnel that has held up beautifully but I wanted to pick up another hori-hori so we had two. Barnel or Nisaku were my 1st choices and the Nisaku is far more easily found. The Nisaku hori-hori is better finished than the Barnel, though the Barnel has a decent sheath. The Nisaku is nicely made. The steel is appropriately thick and is highly polished, which helps whether digging, cutting, or cleaning. It arrived very sharp on both blades, though honestly I think sharpness in a hori-hori is overrated. Our years-old Barnel is quite dull as I've never bothered to sharpen it. It's in constant use for potting, garden maintenance, and weeding (including lawn), and it cuts through turf and roots with no problem with the serrated blade. (I seldom use the plain blade side.) The Nisaku's typical blocky Japanese hori-hori wood handle has some sort of light finish on it, which I will sand off in order to treat the handle with linseed oil. That will take perhaps 5-10 minutes and the handle will hold up far better than with the original finish. Short of a defective blade, which can happen with any brand, I just don't understand how anyone breaks or bends any of the better hori-horis out there when used as intended. It's a gardening tool, not a pry bar, not for hardpan breaking or digging, not for cutting hard dry roots, etc. I weed and repair tough St. Augustine sod all the time with one and the action is quite gentle. Same with weeding garden beds, even heavily weed-choked. The motion is not the vertical stab and pry you would use with a weeding fork. Rather, you slide the blade into the soil at a low angle so as to go just below the weed roots, following with a slight low-pressure push down on the handle - just enough to allow removing the weed, roots and all. This should not feel like prying. Barring entanglements with plants or tree root infiltration , I can usually weed out everything in reach from a single position in seconds and the soil is minimally disturbed. Hori-hori knives are often billed as all-purpose camping and hunting knives. Don't believe it! The blade is all wrong, the steels are wrong, and the handles are wrong. The Nisaku is an excellent hori-hori. Experiment with it and learn to use it gently. It's incredibly fast and efficient when used properly and will last for years. ... show more

  • Extremely well built
Style: Original
I ordered this one because I don't know where my other one is. Once again incredible product for the price. I would rather use this in a small hand trial or shovel any day. Well built, reliable and easy to use! I love it. I will be sending my son when this summer for his gardening.

  • Favorite garden tool!
Style: Original
Title says it all, this is the most versatile garden tool in my arsenal! The quality is fantastic. The metal is sturdy. The handle is sturdy. They are connected really well and the sheath is much needed and perfect for being able to carry it around. My parents used it when they were helping out and loved it so much that I ordered them one immediately. ... show more
