  • One of the best consoles I've ever owned! Best local multiplayer games, period!
I have been playing video games for a while now. I used to play the original Pitfall on my dad's work computer back in 1991 or so. Then we got Nintendo's Famicom (sort of the same thing as the NES), then I had a Sega Genesis, PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4. I had not played Nintendo games in a long time, and I was craving some of the first-party franchises Nintendo owns exclusively. The good old ones, such as Mario, Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Sar Fox, etc. While I love my PS4, there's a uniqueness about Nintendo's franchises that simply can't be found anywhere else. There's some really good PlayStation exclusive games out there, pretty sure XBox1 users will also have some exclusives they love. But when it comes to exclusive IP, Nintendo takes the crown. These are franchises my generation has been playing since we were born. I missed out on the Wii, but the cool thing about the Wii U is that not only it has GREAT games available on it (anything Mario, Mario Kart, Zelda, or any of the others I mentioned above, plus a bunch more), you can also play your old Wii games on it, so that instantly makes the library endless. So yeah, I've been buying Wii games as well... just a decade late, that's all. If you like or want to play games with family and friends, Nintendo's systems are typically designed to do just that. Again, PS4 and XB1, both great systems, but they don't compare when it comes to local multiplayer, again Nintendo takes the crown. Mario Kart, Smash Bros., Nintendoland, Mario Wii U, Mario 3D, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and more, are great, fun games for kids and adults alike. They make great party games, and are easier to set up than board games. The system comes with a gamepad that resembles a portable console or tablet. This is what you will be using for all the menus, and for most games. Some games make special use of this pad, such as Nintendoland, which sometimes will give the gamepad holder a special task that sets that person apart from the rest of the group. Now, not all is fun and games (literally it is, but I'm just speaking metaphorically here) with the Wii U. The system did not sell well, and fell very very short of the expectations Nintendo had for it. The company made a few key mistakes with this system: the main one being the time of release. Depending on how you look at it, the Wii U was either released too early or too late. Too late to compete with the PS3/XB360. Too early to compete with the PS4/XB1, which were released a year later, with far more powerful computers in them and full support from 3rd party developers. This threw off both consumers and developers, because the PS3 and XB360 were already established as the top contenders, with huge libraries of games. And from a 3rd party developer perspective, the system was in between generations, it was too much work to make next gen games and try to port them over to the Wii U hardware, and most importantly, not profitable enough to justify it. One issue you may have is there are many accessories available for the system. There are tons of knock-off brands out there, but the quality is sub par. If there is one thing Nintendo is known for, is quality products. If you can afford it, I recommend getting officially licensed Nintendo products (controllers and such). In conclusion, the poor sales record doesn't mean that the Wii U is not a great system. It is one of the best and most fun consoles I've ever owned. It's like a Wii on steroids. I bought mine two years ago and never regretted it. The marketing mistakes Nintendo made only mean this console had a short life compared to other systems, but there are tons of great games available for it that you won't be able to play anywhere else. Add the Wii library of games on top of that, and OMG, it's never ending. Should you get one? definitely, yes, if you can find a good deal nowadays! Good luck! ... show more

  • Great for family fun!
I decided to purchase the Wii U for my 6 year old after many weeks of debating whether to get the Xbox One or Wii U. I felt like the Xbox One would have been a better console to buy (initially) because it has far more games than the Wii U and because it plays DVD's and Blue Ray Discs. Also, I was worried that the Wii U graphics would be inferior to the Xbox One. So far, the Wii U has impressed me (although I wish it would play DVD/Blue Ray). The Wii U platform offers far more family-friendly games and it's pretty easy to use for kids. A big plus with the Wii U is that my kid can still play games on the Wii U while I watch TV because of the tablet style controller. The Wii U seamlessly moves the video game from the TV to the controller without any issues. Overall, I am pleased with my purchase! The Wii U is very easy to set up right out of the box, however, it's not ready to play the second you get it all hooked up. First, there are some lengthy updates that you will need to install prior to playing. Overall, the initial setup-to-play time was about an hour. Second, the controller requires a full charge prior to playing without it being plugged in which may take a while. This really isn't that big of a deal, but if you are purchasing this as a gift for someone, you might want to crack the box open and do these things prior to them opening it up and wanting to play immediately. The graphics from the games I have played have been very impressive. Both Mario Kart 8 and Call of Duty Ghosts looks fantastic and they even look great on the tablet controller (which surprised the heck out of me)! I am still disappointed in how few games are offered compared to the Xbox One (or even PS4 for that matter). Like I said, there are a lot of kid friendly and family friendly games, but for the adult or mature teen who wants to play some more mature games, you'll find out that your options are limited. One thing the Wii U system has going for it that other systems don't is that the Wii U is backwards compatible. In other words, you can play regular Wii games if you have them. We haven't tested this yet, but as long as it works as described, all the Lego games we have for the Wii will add to the collection we have started to build for the Wii U. Overall, I'm really impressed with the Wii U and think it was the best purchase option for me. If you are buying this for family fun, it's a great buy. If you are a first time gamer looking for a vast array of games, the Xbox One or PS4 is a better option, especially if your kids are older and mature enough to play some of the more recent Role Playing Games (RPG) or First-Person Shooters (FPS). ... show more

  • Best Family/Group/Multi Player Console
I've owned a bunch of systems over the years. The original Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Original PlayStation, Super Nintendo, Atari Lynx (if you even know what that is) and even a B&W Gameboy. Plus my brother has owned several Xboxes. I can confidently say that over the years I feel one console manufacturer has melded the balance of: fun, playability, multi-player experience and broad player base... Nintendo. For one, the company has been around since the beginning of gaming as we now know it. Where's Atari? Any waiting for the new system from Sega? They're starting a Kickstarter campaign, really? Before I continue, take note that the current top three consoles: Xbox 1, PS4 and Wii U are selling for about the same price. Considering that the Wii U came out a year earlier than the other two, I'd expect the price point to be slightly lower, but there you go. If you're reading this, I suspect you're trying to decide between one of those three systems and not trying to decide if you want the U with Mario Kart 8 or the one bundled with Luigi U, just a guess. So, ill try to compare those systems as best I can. For starters, both the PS4 and Xbox1 have a fair (if not considerable) more games than the Wii U. However, quality trumps quality and many of the quality games that can be found on the Xbox1/PS4 can be found on the Wii U. Being a year older, I always find it odd at all the comparison videos on YouTube between the U and/or Xbox1/PS4. The thing is, in most cases the biggest difference is in grapic quality. Check out an Assassins Creed 4 side by side comparison. The texturing is better, but not ridiculously more. The water and sky look slightly nicer, but not enough to make the overall gameplay suffer. So, in the games that are for all three consoles, who had the advantage? Well, that all depends. If all you care about is online multi player, buy a PS4/Xbox1. Why? Because there are thousands of not millions more playing these systems online. But, if online play is not your exclusive domain, here's something to consider about the Wii U. The U comes with a controller that has a built in screen. Many games have taken advantage of this screen and used it for maps, item selects, and just about anything that will enhance your gameplay over a basic controller. Where the Wii U really shines though is in three areas: The original Wii was the first console to incorporate motion controllers into its platform. Players could almost feel the ball release in bowling or serving that ace in tennis. The Wii U builds on that concept that started with the Wii. When playing Mario Kart 8 with a wheel, you almost feel like you're driving the car. Sure, you can play it with a basic controller, but it's just not the same. No other company has even come close to duplicating Nintendos success with motion controlled games. I'd almost say it's their exclusive domain. Secondly, the Wii U excels at group multi player gaming. I'm not taking online, I'm talking the "sitting beside you on the sofa, junk talking, high fiving, drink spilling, cat scaring" coop/versus multi play that gets everyone involved. Who knew that living, breathing, humans could coexist on a 72" lcd gameland and be sharing oxygen and cheese curls? Wii U, hands down, has the best (if not only) large group multi player in the same room game experience of any system. I'm taking 5 or more players here. There are many games for the Wii U that whole groups of people can play. Trust me, we've had 10 people playing one game (caveat: onviously not everyone had a controller, but it was still awesome). Look at the titles available for the top three consoles and see who dominates the "alone in my parents basement with my 'online' friends" games and who owns the "let's get a group together and have some fun" games? And I'm not knocking the online single player FPS games... Uh, yes I am. I've seen my brother stare at the screen like a zombie for 6-8hours straight playing games with "friends"'he's never met. C'mon guys. Put on some sunscreen, go out the front door and join the rest of us earthlings occasionally. Ok, done with that rant. So, easy descion here. "Am I into online gaming or group/some online gaming? And lastly, I feel Nintedo has the broadest game genres to choose from. Here again, the Xbox1/PS4 may have scads more games, but it's a plethora of FPS games (btw, that's First Person Shooter for grandma or Aunt Sue who's looking to buy little Tommy a game system). So, do I want to shoot: Krauts, Japs, futuristic humans, modern day humans, historic humans, prehistoric humans, vampires (once human), zombie (dead human) or just some aliens? The weapons, methods and ways to assassinate are truly amazing. Hey, not that I don't enjoy a good throat slicing, scalped, disembowimg, lynching every once in awhile... I mean, who doesn't? Right? But when you're not on the mood to play that sorta game with mom and want something a little more sanitized for the kiddies, who doesn't want to play a little Mario? The fact is, the Nintendo Wii U does offer some of face stabbing, sniper shooting games (many of the most popular titles, such as Call of Duty) but they also offer something that seems to be sadly lacking in the other big two... games you can actually play with children and the family. Games like Nintendoland (actually a collection of games), all the Mario titles, Super Smash Bros, Wii Sports, Mario Kart 8, etc. In fact, many of the greatest games on the Wii U are Nintendo exclusive games. There's nothing, NOTHING like Mario Kart. Other developers just don't even try. And taking about broad appeal, when's the last time you saw a 70yr old, 25yr old, and 14yr old playing a video game together? I'll tell you one thing, it wasn't Black Ops2 on the PS4. In fact, my mother recently mentioned how much she liked bowling on the Wii. Snicker if you want to, but no other system has the broad appeal of a Wii. In closing, sadly the current top gaming consoles and their offering of games is just a reflection of our society. If you grew up in tight knit gaming (cards, boards, etc) family like me, your going to appreciate the Wii U for what it is and what it does. If you're looking for the best single player online gaming experience, this isn't for you. Regardless, I applaud Nintendo for offering a gaming console that tries to bring people/families together and share in the gaming experience (instead of just trying to up the company stock so the CFO can buy another Porsche. And now for something most people probably don't even care about, but I'm gonna say it anyway. Someday if you live to be 105 and everyone you knew and loved is gone. Before you go to bed each night, what will you be thinking about? Killing an entire team in Halo (Kill Tac) or laughing with your parents while sharing a memory. I don't care if you buy a Wii U, PS4 or nothing at all. Just make some memories. Life is relationships and Life is short. ... show more

  • Updated...does not work with newer TV's in US
Updated review...this device is not recognizable by newer TV's. When I bought this a month ago I was using an ancient Sharp flatscreen - a 60" TV that was about 10 years old. With that TV it worked just fine - absolutely no problems. Well that TV is too heavy to wall mount where we want it so we broke down & upgraded to a new LG 60" smart tv. I am so grateful we did this within a month of buying this system - since I learned that apparently this does not work with the new TV. The TV does not recognize it at all. The system is on & is working just fine - the tablet comes on & is working just fine - we checked the cables a dozen times & switched it out with 2 other cables we were 100% certain worked...made no difference...TV still says there's nothing hooked up to that input. And yes, we switched it to all of the HDMI inputs as well - none would recognize it (although they all recognized our cable box & dvd player using the same exact HDMI cables). I am not an expert in this field so I could be completely wrong - but I'm betting it's because this device is intended for use in the UAE & Saudi Arabia (as it says on the box). I googled it briefly & saw complaints that others with Samsung TV's had the same problem. I am literally within 1 day of the return window so at least I discovered this in time to get my money back, since it cost way too much to not work with our main tv. ______________________________ I'm very happy about my new Wii U. I was nervous about buying this since other reviews said it came with a European plug. The Wii U has been discontinued in the US so I wasn't sure what I would get. When it arrived the box said "For sale in the UAE & Saudi Arabia" - so I was immediately nervous. However I looked into it - the UAE & Saudi Arabia use the same format games as us - so I figured I'd give it a shot. It came with a US plug & while it looked like some items may have been repackaged it was definitely a brand new system, still wrapped in the foam & not a single finger print on it. I unwrapped it all, plugged it in & was thrilled to see it worked. I then tested out some older Wii games I had to make sure there wouldn't be issues there - they all worked just fine. I set my system up for use in the US without any problems. The only thing is i don't think it came with Mario Kart pre-installed - instead there's a disc of the game included...but I'm not sure about that - it may be preinstalled & I'm just not looking in the right place on the Wii U. Ultimately I'm happy I was able to get this before they become totally unfindable in the US. ... show more

  • ... for Christmas this year and the system has been great. The setup was easy
My 5 year old received this for Christmas this year and the system has been great. The setup was easy, although it did take some time for the base unit to update the software. Given that some of these units sit on the shelves for some time prior to being sold, it's understandable. The unit works well and he has really enjoyed Mario Kart, along with the other games he's gotten for it: Lego Dimensions, Skylanders Imaginators and Mario Maker. It's really nice that this is backward compatible with our Wii games and the controllers from the Wii can be utilized as well. The lack of storage (32GB) is disappointing, but it was known when I purchased this. I ended up purchasing a 3 TB (wall powered) Seagate external HD that will serve to store anything he wants. If the system goes by the wayside, this can be repurposed for something else, but I think it will be many years before that happens. He really loves it. ... show more

  • Wifi is the dealbreaker here. Returned it.
I'll start with why this lost 2 stars. The wifi was very spotty. It would connect quickly and then I'd start a download. Within minutes, it would stop the download due to lack of wifi. I would move the console right next to the router and try again. It connected quickly and i'd start the download, within minutes, it'd stop the download due to no wifi. I switch to a different router and started the download yet again right next to it. A few minutes in, it'd stop the download, same reason. I have ps3, ps4, 360, Vita and 3DS. My 3DS does this same thing but nothing else does (including my macbook, mac mini, iPad air and iPhone 6s). It is isolated to only my Nintendo devices which leads me to believe it is due to the bands they use. I rarely download to my 3DS so haven't had to deal with this much but my Wii U, I wanted to use downloaded games instead of discs so this is a dealbreaker. I'm returning it. I had to restart the download SO many times. SO SO SO many times, I basically had to sit there and watch for when the download stops (which is a long time for full game downloads) so I could restart it. Even my Vita isn't that bad. It takes a while to download but it doesn't disconnect every few MB. Also, getting back to the Wii U menu does take a while. Well, longer than I think it should. the new 3DS loads it's menu quite fast so it's strange to me that a home console would take this long. On the bright side, the console has some fun games. Nintendo really have the franchises for cute and fun games. Mario Kart is quite addicting. Wish I could have progressed to the other CCs but I guess I'll have to play it in the future when these issues have been resolved. Also, I read that the above wifi issue is rampant with users and there is no help to remedy it permanently. This is also why I think it's with the hardware Nintendo uses. I'll leave this at 3 stars due to the fact that when you're not going back to the menu or downloading items, the games are fun and the gamepad is a cool way to play games. It's comfortable for me. I find it awkward using the L1 and R1 buttons but never had to use them so isn't a dealbreaker. I love being able to play the full games by using the gamepad as a screen. This aspect is seamless. ... show more

  • I wanted to play Mario Kart 8.
I didn't have a Wii U. This lets me play Mario Kart 8. Mission accomplished. What I didn't realize is that my accessories and games from my Wii are all compatible with the Wii U, and save game data can be transferred to the Wii U in a one-time data move using an SD card. Not having to re-buy all that stuff or keep an old system around just to be able to play old games is really nice. Sony and Microsoft could learn a thing or two here. Setup was easy and painless, and would have been quick as well had I not opted to immediately download the two Mario Kart DLC packs that come bundled with this purchase. Each one gives additional tracks, karts, and characters, for a total of 48(!) different tracks. Gone (sadly) are the battle arenas. Battles now take place on the usual tracks, which aren't really conducive to battle mode, and the coin runners mode is completely removed, leaving only the balloon battle mode. So far all of our multiplayer has been in races, which is fine, but the coin runners is sorely missed. This comes with Mario Kart 8 preloaded onto the internal hard drive, so even though this is a 32GB system, it's only going to have about half that actually available when you receive it. If you want to download additional games from the Nintendo Shop, a single Wii U game is going to use up most of that space. Your options there are to either buy the retail (disc) version of Wii and Wii U games, or add an external hard drive. Any powered external drive can be connected via USB, and at this time up to 2TB of space can be used on an external drive. In addition to current titles, a lot of classic titles from many different consoles can be downloaded from the Nintendo Shop. Not everything you want is available, but quite a bit is, so that's one less excuse to keep an old console lying around. ... show more

  • Best console in my opinion
Oh boy, what can I say, what can I say? I've seen myself as a bit of a Nintendo fan for about as long as I can remember; playing Super Mario, Pokemon, Zelda... the list goes on. I've had a Wii for nearly a year now, & when I saw that the Wii U was being shown at the price it was, I just couldn't say no. Man, when I finally got the console and started playing it, I just couldn't put it down! I was blown away by the updated graphics, the fancy new interface that is definitely a step up from the Wii's, the connectivity of it all... It was just awesome. What REALLY sold me was that I could use the Wii U with my normal, non-HD TV! That's some serious consideration on Nintendo's part, unlike the Xbox One and PS4. Plus, the titles are just plain fun :) Hours upon hours of quality entertainment to be had with it. I'm really glad I purchased this Wii U! ... show more
