  • DETAILED REVIEW
This is definitely worth it. They finally made a retro bundle that includes (most of) the right games, and it's now finally widely available at it's intended price. Control is perfect, imho. It seems to respond exactly the way I remember the same games playing, and I played most (not all) of them originally quite a bit, as I'm sure most of you did. Mega Man II in particular I thought was a great test of controller response, and it felt great. Not sure why there are negative reviews commenting on control or appearance of the games - it seems very solid, and I love the square pixel perfect mode. The game save mechanism is also pretty good. At any time during any game, you can press the 'reset' button on the base system to return to the home menu. At that point, there will be a little floating square in the bottom left that represents the temp save point of the game you were just in. You can either go back to it and continue playing, or, press down and it will give you the option of permanently saving that as a game save to one of the four save slots for each game. You can either fill an empty one, or replace a previous save. That is, each game can have four separate saves of it's own, not just four total for the system. Some notable games that is doesn't have, sadly, are: Mega Man III, Dragon Warrior III or IV, Tetris, Blaster Master, Castlevania III, Contra. Before you search for a second controller in store or online, if you have any controllers that plugged into your Wii-motes, those should work on this system. Nintendo's site for this system has a page that lists compatible controllers - take a look, there are several. If you have a box of Nintendo stuff, chances are you have one. Yes, the cord for the controller is extremely short - I thought this only added to the nostalgic part of sitting in front of the TV as a little kid for hours. Of course it's not a long term way to play - there are many inexpensive extensions available. My advice on this would be to get over it, get an extension, or get a wireless controller. Just keep in mind how many stock cords come with things these days that you immediately discard for something custom you buy anyway. The sticking point made out of the cord length by some negative reviews is laughable. Lastly - some people will mention roms/emulators and making a better version of all this with a RaspberryPi or similar. Yeah, you can do that - but I'd first ask yourself how much time you're really going to put into these games. There's plenty on here, and it has several good games. My point here is, don't let the "Can do much better with an R-Pi setup with hundreds of NES/SNES/N64 instead of just 30 NES" reviews and comments mislead you into thinking this is some kind of ripoff. This NES classic is a great value with zero setup time (for comparison, it's the equivalent of a new PS4/Xbox game today, and I'd say the hours of entertainment are about equal or more to one of the better games on those systems). It's not a wrong move by any means. R-Pi is a different option for people with different needs. I have a NES classic and I'll probably still make the R-Pi thing. Show less ... show more

  • So FUN!
This Nintendo is such a great idea. It has all the games preloaded. The pixelation isn't as bad as I thought it would be. Brings back fond memories and Nintendo floor chairs. My daughter loves them too.

  • Great Little Device
It took me nearly two years to get but I finally have an NES Classic Edition. Within that span of time I said to hell with Nintendo’s dumb box and bought a raspberry pi, loaded it with the retro pi operating system and had a retro gaming blast. I’ve played a lot of games on the retro pi but not one single NES game since I preferred more recent retro game. So why would I go back and buy a system for which I technically had no need? I will compare and contrast the two and help people decide which to buy or whether both might make sense. LEGALITY Here is the elephant in the room. Using emulation and ROM’s is a gray area but from a legal standpoint you can only play a ROM if you own a physical copy of the game. In the case of arcade games this is nearly impossible. In the case of home console games this could be financially and logistically prohibitive. There is no gray area with the NES Classic Edition. It is 100% legal. There are all sorts of moral debates one can have regarding the usage of ROM’s but the Mini is guilt free. EASE OF USE The retro pi is a lot of work to set up. Even individual games can require configuration. This is not for everyone. The NES Classic Edition can be set up in seconds. It has a very user friendly interface as opposed to the retro pi which can be challenging. AVAILABLE GAMES With the NES Classic Edition you get 30 games. With the retro pi you have more games available than you could ever play, including all the game on the Mini. As long as you can get the ROM and have a compatible emulator you should be good to go. Also, note that you can transfer the ROM’s and emulators to just about any PC and some have even hacked the Mini to load on hundreds more games. If that’s what you’re in to. CONTROLLERS When the NES Classic Edition was announced I heard a lot of complaints about it not having Bluetooth or wi-fi support and mocked them for the ridiculousness of their desires. Then I saw that the slightly more expensive raspberry pi had both. With wireless support I can use my Wii U pro controllers or pretty much any modern controllers including my beautiful 8bitdo NES30 pro. With the NES Classic Edition I got a remake of the classic NES controller with a teeny cord. They couldn’t even include two controllers. With the retro pi I can use controllers I already own and sit on my couch with my pi under my TV. With the Mini I would need to spend extra for another controller and they aren’t cheap. You make the call on which is the best for you. The retro pi has unlimited games, if you know how to set it up, but it requires a lot of work and has some dubious ethics. The NES Classic has just 30 games but it’s a slick Nintendo interface with no legal gray areas. I wish the second iteration of the Mini had corrected some of the complaints of the original but given the way the machine is selling I guess Nintendo felt no need. Regardless, it’s a very cool device at a reasonable price. ... show more

  • Yep, it's real
OK, so the price is high, but if you loved these games in the 80s, as I did, and you didn't get one for $60 when they were originally released, it's worth it. Has most of the best games. Wish a few more two player sports games were included. The one controller provided doesn't function optimally, so I had to buy an expensive second one. This console IS the real thing, as opposed to cheaper knockoffs that are available. ... show more
