EA Season Ticket Review
I was able to start playing this game Friday as part of the EA season Ticket package. After 3 days with this game I can official say its by favorite NHL Title. The new physics engine is amazing. Being able to actually skate backwards behind the net really adds to your options of playing the puck down low. Someone already gave the game a 1 star review because they weren't smart enough to figure out the hitting yet. Its really not that hard, if you are having trouble try adjusting the sliders. Either way hits in this game are better then ever. The fixes from last year besides the actually physics are far and few in between. I'm glad you don't have nearly as many broken sticks as last year becuase that just got out of hand in a hurry. Goalies are smarter like they are every year but it will only take you a day or two to find that shot that scores for you nearly every time until you up the difficulty. Be a Pro is the same as last year... Literally the same. Franchise mode is largly the same except trading is so much better now. Instead of being clueless as to why your trades are being rejected you now get helpful feedback from the opposing manager. They tell you exactly what players they would be interested in trading for on your team and who they are willing to let go. Very nice addition. NHL did learn a lesson from madden and kept their Connected GM mode seperate from the normal GM (Franchise Mode). I don't think they really needed to since NHL fans are by definition smarter then Madden fans and we would have figured it out but at least they gave us the option. All in All its the best NHL game ever made. That not saying a lot since its the only new NHL game getting made every year but it is better then last years. Is it 60 dollars worth of better then last year... Well that up to you. I for one need Hockey in my life since the lockout is looming so I paid the 60 bucks. Other may not think the changes are big enough and you really can't argue that point since there isn't a ton of new features. However as a Hockey fan I'm glad to have something to hold me over while Bettman continues to ruin the greatest sport on earth. Lets all hope the owners finally grow a brain and realize their poster boy is ruining the sport for all of us. Happy NHL Day Everyone! ... show more

Best NHL Game
This is by far that most realistic and best NHL game so far. A lot of other reviewers complained about the the new skating system, but it just takes time to get used to, I hated it at first also. I like the NHL Moments, which is you can try to re-create or re-write the history of an event. For example, one of them is comeback and beat the Kings in Game 6 after they scored three goals during the major penalty against the Devils. Although I haven't tried it yet, the customize your AI option seems really cool, which is you basically customize the way your AI plays, like how aggressive they are on the fore-check and etc. Hitting is also different because the skating is based of physics. It's harder to completely level people but when you do occasionally it is a lot better than in NHL 12. I do like how you can skate backwards and sprint whenever you want now. My strategy in NHL 12 is a lot less effective in this game because the defenders are smarter. In NHL 12, I would pass it to my teammate to the right/left of me on the rush and try to one time it in. But is this game, the defenders (most of the time) will jab it away with the poke check. Lastly, they show better highlights at the end of the game and in between periods. In NHL 12, all they showed were hits and goals. In NHL 13, you will now see saves included in the highlights. ... show more

VERY REALISTIC!!!!
Short and sweet, I am a new (I understand the basics) to the game and sport of Hockey/ NHL. I recently purchased the NHL 12 for the PS3 and I had so much fun with it that I purchased NHL 13 but for the 360. I must say that this "True performance Skating" takes a bit of getting used too. The control layout is not hard to remember or probably master for some but I have it down enough to be somewhat competitive (Offline w/ friends). In NHL 12 you can pull off most shots from basically anywhere with ease, not this year, I found myself struggling to get decent shots or if any at all. My puck was turned over quite a bit and at Faceoff the opposing team dominated. I was frustrated, but it was a good frustation, it only makes me wanna perfect the strategy of the gameplay. If you think you will shoot(score) puck after puck...think again!!! The AI is way smarter too, I found that I was really earning my shots, even the commentator's were saying how shots were hard to come by. The AI also makes you control your puck better because if you don't they will have pocession time and time again. The game has a great learning curve, I am a true Madden fan to the end, so I just wanted something else that would challenge my intellect but in a very fun way. I recommend this game to anyone who loves, likes or is just a casual spectator of Hockey. I am very sorry that I don't have anything to say about the Online play but if you like Offline then it's awesome. I will just stick with my Offline gameplay in Franchise mode until I get better. ... show more

Step back from 12
To start off the only mode i play is online vs matches so i have less of an idea how the computer AI works as well as Be a Pro mode or any of that other stuff. I have been playing this series since nhl 01 and so far this may be the most frustrating one to date. Good: Graphics are similar to 12 (which is pretty good) New skating takes a little to get used to but overall i feel like this could help the series There are times when this game is actually fun producing great passing plays, great goals, and epic hits Bad: Poke check: To start off the poke check is now your best use on defense. more than that it is your only defense. stick lift results in an automatic penalty and even if performed right the other player usually just grabs the puck before you do. you can poke check passes as well as shots. Ive seen players one timers simply poked out of the air sending the puck way off target. Hitting can also be useful although a lot of the time a player will simply bounce off a mean hit and continue skating. With poke checking so effective there is really little need for other strategies often resulting in the puke being poked around the ice from one team to the other. I understand EA wanted to make it harder for players to simply dance around the ice like we could in 12 but i feel they took it way too far making even the simplest dekes almost impossible. Scoring/Goalies: The goalies in this game have become unstoppable in the net and border line retarted in other aspects. Many a games have been lost by a goalie coming out to get the puck only to somehow miss it allowing an easy goal. A slapshot that misses the net will scare the s#%t out goalies causing them to dive towards the puck usually missing it and creating another horrible goal. Once in front of the net though these goalies become superhuman, with the average game score (for me at least and i have played over 100 games) is usually along the lines of 1-0, 1-2, with some games breaking the 3 goal barrier. I feel EA has a problem with cool looking goals. You can Perform an amazing deke leading to a breakaway only to have the goalie crush your dreams while making it look easy, yet a backhander from the blue line will most likely lead to a rebound and a goal. Pretty much the only way to score in this game are finicky goals that seem to be based on luck. Granted skilled players will have more of these opportunities but a lot of it still comes down to how well the rebound will be. It is far more common in this game for a player to have more time of possession, more shots, and still lose. Gone are the days of scoring one timers. any attempted one timer pass made in the opponent zone will most likely be poked away leading to players taking crappier shots and hoping that the puck will bounce toward their players. Of all the games ive played i would estimate that 20 percent end up in overtime and shootout (WAY more than 12) further solidifying the poor scoring mechanics. Overall i want to love this game. I feel it has the mechanics to be a great game in a great series although so far i just dont see it. This could be another case of a company trying to make their game too "real" while taking a lot of the fun out of it. Bottom line: if i had the choice i would stick with nhl 12 and hope they can make this game less of a headache next year. ... show more

Best NHL yet!
This year EA finally decided to step up their NHL franchise by implementing a plethora of new features and adjusting the physics of the game. My person favorite game mode Hockey Ultimate Team has been updated, making it almost unrecognizable (this is not a bad thing) the new features were added to give it a more realistic feel from the picking of the team to what you are able to do. My personal favorite update is letting the computer auto-organize your team saving you countless hours because the computer will pick the best overall team while also taking into account how well the players will play with each other. Most of the other game modes from what I have played are the same and is completely fine with me since if it ain't broke don't fix it. Now onto the my favorite improvement on the NHL franchise and that is how much the skating physics have been improved since last years edition. Skating is a game changer and is in no way the same as last years. I clearly remember last year when skating you could turn on a dime and do endless 360's but no this is impossible because skaters actually react to how you would on real ice. Stopping is delayed since you have to dig in and when going full speed you cannot turn very well or you will lose your edge. With this addition it just adds to the realism of NHL which is something i want when playing a hockey game. Overall if you are on the edge about buying this game I highly recommended you buy it and play it a few games before deciding if it is any good because at first I was a little skeptical but now I love the game more than last years and I LOVED last years. Get out there and buy it! you won't be disappointed! ... show more

Best version yet
I have played every incarnation of NHL since the first one on Genesis. There have been some very poor efforts (early PS2 era) along with some mediocre improvements. NHL 13 is in my opinion the best yet. The skating engine is very realistic as well as the AI. If you like to run at guys, good luck. They'll skate right around you. Very, very few bugs. I have had a couple of times where one skater gets stuck, II'm talking 2 or 3 in 100 games or so. The commentary is pretty much the same as previous years which is good. Would have been nice to get Jim Hughson or Pat Foley for a change, the top 2 announcers in my opinion. But it is what it is. Game play is a lot like last year except for the new skating engine which is a really big improvement and makes it worth the upgrade. Seeing how there is no season, this is as real as you'll get this year. ... show more

Good, But A Real Hair Puller!
I was hoping never to have to see this day when the good folks at EA Canada got the Madden (Tiburon) treatment. But, alas with NHL 13 it happened. The Madden treatment is, "We'll give you a couple of features that you will like, but we will take away or modify a couple of features that you really liked." I believe FIFA got the same treatment after FIFA 12 was pretty much everyone's sports game of the year. I did not buy FIFA 13. First, there are some very good pros: The biggest pro. This is the only live NHL thing that we will be seeing this year. The skating is great and really adds to the realism. The control you have of your player is unprecedented. The speed makes a difference going around other players. I love the fact that you can now play the game with the Broadcast camera, which is a game-changer for me. To see a game like I see it on TV is sweet to play. I know there are legions of fans in Madden wishing for this someday. It is frustrating at first, because we are all so used to playing the game up-and-down, but once you see how much more of the ice you can see, I think you will enjoy it. Just be careful during the playoffs as the fans waving towels can shield your vision on some plays. Also, be sure to change your stick control from up-and-down to side-to-side. The game is still very deep and I love the additional NHL Moments feature that has been added. Unfortunately, this was supposed to correlate with games in the 2012-13 season, but as we know that is probably not happening. I really like the new goalie animations, while it seems like the goalies have gotten a little too good, it is because they are really good in real life. Most goalies will stop nine out of every ten shots they face. If you average 30 shots per game, that is only around three goals and that is about where I am with the game. Now, the cons: EA Canada says they made the AI better, I just do not see it and I am not alone. The checking is terrible and the other team can swipe the puck away from you way too easy with players of little ability. A kid from the OHL should not be able to barely touch Ilya Kovalchuk and watch him fall and lose the puck. Plus, the defense can pick passes off with too much ease. One thing I always loved about the NHL series was that it rewarded you for taking the body instead of playing the puck. In this year's game, you can be a traffic cone, do very little and you ended the offensive rush. There is more shot blocking, which has become a bigger talking point in the NHL, but hockey is a game where you should always play the bigger object, the man is bigger than the puck and that is the worst change in the game. While Gary Thorne and Bill Clement are excellent together in the game, it is definitely time for a change in the booth. You have been hearing from them for a little too long and they have not been re-scripted. Since, Hughson and Emrick have done hockey in the past, I would pick Chris Cuthbert. I would have Pierre McGuire as his sidekick, for no other reason than to have everyone go ape and also to find out what he would say about the kids playing junior hockey when you are playing a junior hockey game. Would he know their middle school? I don't even bother with having fighting on as it stinks. I wish ECHL teams were added, but that is really being a nitpicker. (Go Las Vegas Wranglers!) Overall, NHL 13 got the Madden treatment and that is not a compliment. The Madden treatment is one step forward, and two steps back. It is 3.5 stars for me. Certainly not terrible, but certainly not what it should be. ... show more

Insert and Play. Easy to Learn and Fun to Play!
I am an older gamer and like my games where you can take out of box and play. Sadly most games now are too complicated and I don't play as much as I used to. Lucky for me NHL 13 had a very short learning curve. After about 3 games I was able to figure out how to beat the computer on a regular basis (note i played casual level). At first I was playing the 1994 controlls which were the a and b buttons. After a few games I tried total control and it was pretty easy to master. I have trouble getting the speed to check people and defense is way harder than offense but I can get enough goals that I dont need to worry about defense. You have all NHL teams, all star teams, legend teams (hello gretzky), ahl, ehl teams etcl. You can play season or tournaments which are fast enough you can play an entire tournament in a few hours.
