Description

This one-of-a-kind photo book offers evocative portraits of New York bars after closing time.Daniel Root’s photos of New York bars at dawn are a perfect blend of beauty and melancholia. Everything about them is just right. ―Roz Chast, New Yorker cartoonistNearly every day, Daniel Root sets out before sunrise to wander the streets of Manhattan with his camera. In those comparatively quiet hours, the entire city wears a different face, but Root is particularly fascinated by the scenes to be glimpsed through the windows of its bars. Empty of patrons and illuminated by an odd mix of artificial lights―neon beer ads, red EXIT signs, a single bulb above the cash register―they present a more hushed and mysterious aspect than in the busy evening hours. Nonetheless, each one―whether a dive bar, a sports bar, or a restaurant bar―still conveys an individual character, a distinct personality. New York Bars at Dawn presents some two hundred of Root’s most compelling bar portraits, ranging from well-known establishments like Balthazar, McSorley’s, and the Stonewall Inn to nameless dives and an American Legion post. A foreword by Rosie Schaap, author of Drinking with Men, shows us just how much Root’s photographs reveal about bar culture, and an afterword by art historian Suzaan Boettger examines their aesthetic qualities. This will be an essential volume for anyone with an interest in nightlife, interiors, or urban photography. 200 full-color illustrations Read more

  • Visually stunning photos show a dreamy view of night(life) in NYC
Daniel Root's photos of NYC bars and bar interiors, mostly on Lower Manhattan, are offering a stunning, almost surreal view of night in New York after the revelers have all gone to bed. Many bars featured in the book brought back specific memories for me: that one time I was here with X, that time I celebrated Z's birthday there... This book will be a walk through memory lane for many New Yorkers, it's a great historic document (as, given that this is New York, 10 or 20 years from now, not all these bars will still be around) showing the city that supposedly never sleeps at its dreamiest. ... show more

  • The early bird does indeed get the worm!
Just a stunning array of photographs that capture the clarity of last night. A painterly mix of wood and colors mellowed by dawn, leave you hearing the echoes of glass and ice.

  • Notably Original -- Wonderful Idea
Hauntingly beautiful photographs of so many bars that I've been to! When thumbing through the book, I was reminded of so many memories spent at these bars. Yet it was like seeing them anew. Each photo shows a familiar place in a new after-hours glow. Thanks for assembling such a beautiful collection of photographs. ... show more

There is a big bright magical loneliness to the photos of after the people have gone home.

  • Who knew New York City bars could be so magical at 5 AM?
Daniel Root has discovered a vast, beautiful world in New York City that hardly anyone has ever seen. He’s revealed that the drinking establishments you love to frequent because they’re fun and lively are in off-hours actual, genuine works of art. Even if you’ve never been to any of these bars or live in New York, this is a book you can get lost and over and over. ... show more

  • Luscious Color and Memories Galore
For a former New Yorker who returns only occasionally this is such a delight to stroll through. Here we get it all, from the elegance of old New York seen anew, to the many dives I recall so well. My old place, which I visit every time I get back looks the same yet so very different in this quiet state – now I can't wait to get back and see it through new eyes. And the countless others I recall as slamming during the evening or night rush all so strangely calm despite the riot of color the camera describes, just hints of the party or clues? A lonely wash bucket, a tipped over chair, drink recipies, a no trespassing sign, a quietness to these often loud places. That there is such a huge level of detail is half the fun, the graffitied Clockwork, the busyness of Shark Bar, Vandal, Pinkies. Posters, photos, an ancient cash register. So many little things to discover, so many of which take me back to someplace long forgotten. I've paged through this dozens of times already, and I always find more, always some memory evoked. A treat not to be missed. ... show more
