Format: Audiobook
Plot Summary (No spoilers!): This is a book written by award-winning psychologist and author Andrew Solomon that interviews various people in non-conventional family situations. It is a frank, honest look into lifestyles similar to my own (divorce and adoption of a child out of foster care) and many that are completely different. I appreciated his honest questioning and obvious care for each person he interviewed. He set them at ease but did not shy away from difficult topics and questions. Things I thought I knew about challenges faced by non-conventional relationships and family structures were either supported or shattered, and I feel wiser and more empathetic regarding those around me than before I read the book. What you liked: I really enjoyed the interviews. He asked insightful questions, and was not afraid to laugh at himself or take constructive feedback. I was in awe of some of the families that shared incredibly painful and personal information with him in the hopes that it would help someone else. What you did not like: He is definitely not a professional narrator, and his tone could sometimes be grating, however, having someone else read it would not have been possible as it was mainly recordings of his interviews. I loved this experience. I enjoyed learning about the topics at hand and I firmly agree with a lot of what I heard and was pleased with what I learned. But this was not a book. Yes, there was an overall narrative, but this isn't the audio recording of a book -- it's a podcast that interviewed a bunch of different people and then used that audio and some overlaying narrative to create an experience. Overall, while I'm disappointed and feel misled about this being a book when it very much isn't, I'm glad to have heard this experience and want to recommend it to others. The parts that really hit home for me were the families that have adopted children and the women that are child-free. (I imagine that the blended families will hit harder when my boyfriend and I begin living together as he has three children I love.) ... show more

    • Amazing Andrew Solomon Does it Again
Format: Audiobook
This is a valuable and engaging look at families today. Andrew Solomon is extremely thorough in his study and explanation of all possible families. He highlighted family types that I hadn't even thought about as "families". This thought-provoking audiobook enlarged my view of what family consists of and how these various families positively raise the children of our communities. I enjoyed the interviews with members of various families expounding on their family structure. These interviews centered the book into a personal look at families rather than an intellectual guide to possible family structures. Thank you, Andrew, once again. Each of your books has been a chance for me to learn and expand my thinking as well as find compassion, acceptance, and great value of those whose families are not like mine. ... show more
