  • Comfortable car-camping chair
Color: Sedona/Smoke
I went back and forth for months before deciding to give the Stargaze a shot - it's certainly one of the pricier options for camp seating out there, and doesn't pack up nearly as small as some of the ultralight backpacking stools/chairs I've used in the past. At the same time though, I was moving away from backpacking and over to car camping, so size and weight had become somewhat less of an issue than they used to be. (That being said, with the car being a 2-door Wrangler size is still something to keep an eye on - a number of traditional "folds up into a 4 foot by 16 inch cylinder" camp chairs got rejected for not fitting my vehicle very well.) Plus somewhere along the way I managed to live past the half-century mark, where furniture comfort starts having a value all on its own. I'm also eyeballing overlanding in the future, and a common comment from experienced overlanders is to not cut corners on your chair, because if you're on the road for weeks/months at a time you're going to be spending a LOT of that time in your chair. I liked that the chair had a wide range of seating positions, and while not exactly "super-compact" or "featherweight" was at least something that would easily fit anywhere in the Jeep, and small and light enough that I could see tossing it on my back for a short hike to any nearby scenic spot I might encounter. The design looked both sturdy and comfortable. And most of the other chairs I was looking at missed out on one or more of those points - bulkier packed size, often heavy, most were fixed position, where their main plus point became "but cheaper!" Eventually I finally talked myself into giving the Stargaze a try and ordered one. Recently had a chance to bring the Stargaze on a camping vacation trip and test it out, and I was very VERY satisfied with it. Having practiced a few times at home the chair was trivial to set up. Daytime highs for the trip were in the upper 80s, humidity was even higher most of the days, but there was also normally a breeze as well, so with the large expanses of mesh in the Stargaze I still felt decently comfortable. Owing to various (mis-)adventures over the years my back and knees have taken a pretty good beating, so I particularly liked the way the armrest poles with their clearly-labeled "hold here" reminders provided a strong stable leverage point for getting in and out of the chair - it made it easy to sit/stand without taxing any of my over-abused body parts. Once I was seated the stability was obvious throughout the full range of chair back positions - whether I was seated upright or lounging back or anywhere in between, I never once felt like anything was wobbly or tipsy. Instead I found myself so relaxed that I was easily able to take a siesta nap on a couple of the afternoons. If you're having any issues with packing the chair back up afterwards, definitely go find the Nemo tutorial video about packing the Stargaze and watch it, then practice a few times. (A smart person might even closely examine how the chair was packed from the factory the first time they opened the bag up. Sadly, I am not such a smart person.) Before I watched the tutorial the best I was getting was a jumbled mess that technically fit back in the bag, but seemed to poke out in odd places and strained the zipper a bit. Afterwards, I had a nice organized bundle that dropped into the bag, and even a little bit of space to spare. ... show more

  • Sturdier than the others.
Color: Graphite/Smoke
A sturdy chair base. Probably the most of all these chairs I've seen. The seat is a good mesh so does not hold water, no wet shorts! The seat is as comfortable as any soft chair and the back is high enough. Disappointed in the back does not recline as much as I originally thought, however, that may well be a safety feature and is not really a biggie. ... show more

  • Very comfortable camping chair
Color: Fortress/Goldfinch
I even tried to use this in as my regular chair (my office chair just broke) and it works fine and more comfortable than my temporary hard wood chair. Love the reclining feature.

  • Returning - Too small for a plus sized person
Color: Sedona/Smoke
The chair is a really nice product, but it's just too small for my family. The length of the seat / back was perfect for me, at 5'4" but too short for my spouse, He felt like he needed more fabric under his legs to rest comfortably. Then both my spouse and I need a wider seat than this has. My husband and I both wear XL clothes, but we are well under the stated weight support of up to 300lbs. The "non-spill" drink holder was at a 90-degree angle to the floor because the width of my legs ended at the cup holder rim. If you look at the promotional photos you'll see what I mean about the cup holder. It's well made and I could see it being very comfortable for a smaller person, it just seems like this was made for a petite frame or child. ... show more

  • Not ideal for all situations, but can’t be beat by a campfire!
Color: Twilight/Smoke
Luxury is an apt description. It’s not ideal in all situations, but It can’t be beat by a campfire. Also find I appreciate having it most by the lake and at the beach. The cup holder is functional, but the positioning calls for more awareness and caution than I’d prefer. Bottles are the safest followed by tall boys and regular cans. It sits like 3-4” from your left thigh, versus in the arm rest. Set up is reasonably quick, but packing it back up into the carrier can be a pain. I’m 5’ 11” and 179 lbs. I do not believe that it will comfortably accommodate someone who is much wider and larger than myself. It’s positioned lower, so you kind of plop down into the chair. Arm rest supports are used to get up. The elderly may find it more difficult than a regular folding chair. The rocking motion is far and away the best part. Support and comfort is very good, not great. Overall I have no regrets with the purchase. It’s well made, like most Nemo products, and my kids (and others) are quick to steal it when I get up. ... show more

  • Comfortable but not for everyone
Color: Sedona/Smoke
First off I have to say it is nice that it folds down small and has a sturdy carry bag but stuffing it back in is harder than you think. It needs to have some Velcro straps especially for the frame as it is just bungeed poles similar to a tent pole but are hard to hold together to put in the bag. I added the straps but they should have come with them. It is very low to the ground so for me it fits since I am short but my husband hates it. However the head rest is very tall so does not work with a ponytail or clip at all even with the pillow adjusted down as low as possible. When I take off the pillow, it works. It rocks well but you can see the poles flex and wiggle within the frame and I am afraid they will wallow out and become an issue so will watch that. The chair itself is completely mesh (I thought it would have some fabric at least on the seat or for support but it does not. I sat on one at REI that did have some fabric and back support fabric so curious if I got an older or newer one. The poles were wrapped and foam taped when it arrived but when you pull those off they were dirty and to be honest looked used. The seat seems fine but I would not be able to tell unless it was dirty also. As far as comfort goes, it is short but very comfortable for me minus the little pillow thing that hits my head. You can sit upright or tilt back to see the stars but there is no in between adjustment like other chairs of this type. It is a constantly moving strap that does not secure into a hold position. What I can definitely say is that after looking at it closely and comparing it to another knock off brand, it is not worth nearly $300 with tax. I am considering sending it back because of that. The knock off while not all mesh and not as short had some better features and the poles did not wiggle as much so seemed sturdier. ... show more
