  • A flawed masterpiece.
Nemesis returns in blu-ray format for the first time in gran fashion. Movie Review: Nemesis at it's core is a sci-fi action flic where robots are trying to replace humanity. Humans augment themselves with cybernetics for combat. Alex Rain is basically a Blade Runner hunting down robots but after sustaining injuries becomes more and more robot. The acting is bad but in a cool way. The effects are cool yet cheap. Good things about the movie is the action is great and everyone is really good looking. It has a cult following and deservedly so. Blu-Ray quality and stuff review. The blu-ray has the movie in widescreen or full screen format and it looks fantastic. This movie has always looked blurry but that is gone here. There is some grain due to the age of the film but the sound and picture are the best that it has ever been released. The Extras are two other cuts of the film in DVD format. The directors cut has extended scenes of violence, sex, and the order of the scenes is also switched, quality is standard definition. The bad ending Japanese version has alternate scenes and evil ending. Finally, some trailers and interviews are included. Final thoughts: I'm a fan of this film so I'm over the moon about this great release. Friends that have seen it do think the movie is good but low budget. The quality of the film is great and the different cuts will be a treat for fans. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • A blast of cyberpunk B-movie chop suey of Terminator 2 (1991), Cyborg (1989) & Blade Runner (1982).
The 90s were littered with craptastic direct-to-video cyborg action movies. But if ever you were to take a chance on one of them, this is it. From IMDB—“Alex (Olivier Gruner; Kumite, The Circuit), a burned out LA cyborg cop, is forced by commissioner Farnsworth (Tim Thomerson; Trancers 1-5, Near Dark, Dollman, Bad Channels) to find his former cyborg partner and lover Jared (Marjorie Monaghan; Space Rangers, Babylon 5) who's about to deliver sensitive data to cyborg terrorists who wish to wage war against humans. Is he being played?” In this Blade Runner (1982) meets Cyborg (1989) throwback, director Albert Pyun (Cyborg, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Kickboxer 2, Dollman, Nemesis 2-4) spins a not-so-distant future setting in 2027. Los Angeles is littered with cyborgs and bio-enhanced terrorists. Our Van Damme-esque foreign-accented hero along with the storytelling style smack hard of Cyborg (1989), which is all too familiar territory for Albert Pyun. Apparently, Alex finds himself amid a plot to replace all humans with cyborg clone replacements. The special effects are generally quite satisfying—especially considering this is a direct-to-video release from nearly 30 years ago I never knew existed. I came in expecting comically cheap B-movie antics, but the first effects scene played off the T-1000 getting a shotgun to the head. Of course, it’s not all solid gold. But this flick is trying its best and I’m more than entertained. Androids get their heads blown off, a sexy cyborg (Deborah Shelton; Body Double, Circuitry Man II) saunters around Thomas Jane (Deep Blue Sea, The Mist, The Predator), and robotic limbs get mangled. You’ll also enjoy recognizing a lot of before-they-were-famous faces including Jackie Earle Haley (RoboCop, Watchmen, Preacher), Sven-Ole Thorsen (Conan the Barbarian, The Running Man, Hard Target, Gladiator, Kull the Conqueror), Brion James (The Fifth Element, Blade Runner) and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Mortal Kombat, Planet of the Apes, Tekken). The ambitiously abundant action, on the other hand, is nothing impressive for early 90s theatrical action—but it still may be hitting above its weight class among direct-to-video era films. Explosions pepper the screen as lady cyborgs in tights and short skirts unload thousands of rounds of ammunition at our hero, spelunking through the wreckage of dilapidated buildings seeking cover. It seems that every big gun fires highly explosive rounds with very little accuracy as each bullet causes a landmine-like explosion in the wake of our protagonists’ footsteps. Despite decent Sci-Fi/action pacing through the first hour, the final act plays out like a straight action movie… and it’s the least exciting portion of the movie. That is, until the finale when a mid-air-upside-down Alex shoots the bad guy during a double somersault off a waterfall (it’s pretty ridiculous) reducing the bad guy to his fleshless T-800 robotic endoskeleton. Then there’s a stop-motion robot fight showdown, which was actually rather redeeming. I expected to watch this and simply laugh at the stupidity of it all. But instead, I found myself enjoying this B+ movie makes a strong effort on all fronts. ... show more

  • NEMESIS ON BLU-RAY, THE DIRECTORS CUT SHOULD BE DIGITAL REMASTERED
MVD has reissued NEMESIS on blu-ray for the first time ever which is Great i'm happy that's its now on blu-ray but not 100% effort has been given for the film Disc 1 has the usual 95min Theatrical cut in new HD quality and does look amazing quality very nice sharp picture quality but does still have some Grain and dirt in the picture so hasn't been cleaned 100% but is very close my PQ rating is 8/10 , can be viewed in either 1:78:1 ratio or 2:35:1 ratio Albert Pyuns Directors cut vsn is on Disc 1 aswell again in both ratios but has Albert pyun's commentary fixed on the film so can't be turned off nethertheless the picture is average looks like it's sourced directly from master tape VHS so very unfortunate the picture has not been cleaned much it's still little blurry couldve easily been Digitally remastered for sure but MVD didn't make the effort to do so for some reason so the picture quality is about 5-6/10 so it's tolerable to watch EXTRAS a new interview with Albert Pyun, Albert is doing the interview in his Lounge chair so he seems to be cripled but anyway very interesting interview goes for 35mins Albert covers all topics, the writing, producing, casting, filming, locations, the different vsns of the film the films reaction, Legacy theres also 1 more interview with Producer Eric carson also worth watching aswell for 32mins plus the usual trailer in HD Disc 2 is DVD of the Directors cut vsn again but this time the commentary is optional and the picture quality is the same as on the blu-ray Disc about 5-6/10 there's also the Japanese cut added aswell which is only little longer thean 95min Thaetrical cut an extra 50sec longer that's all, the Japanese vsn does have Japan subtitles on bottom of the screen EXTRAS- there's more extras mainly vintage promo interviews filimed when the movie was being released in Theaters, intro's by Albery Pyun and Olivier Gruner, a stunts promo of the film and other extras i wouldve given this new blu-ray 5 stars for sure if the Directors cut vsn was cleaned up alot more should be close to 8-9/10 quality, instead it's only estimate 5-6/10 quality pretty tragic an insult anyway 3.5 stars for this new blu-ray worth buying for sure, the blu-ray is ABC coded, the dvd is all regions ... show more
