  • Not a big forge but it's a good one.
I really like this little forge. It's a good one even though it is a little bit smaller than what I was thinking it would be. But it is perfect for me to do what I want to do. I really like that it came with the fire brick and it is already insulated and ready to use it. You have to use it on the side, not like straight up and down like other ones that I have seen before. You have to use the fire brick if you want to put a crucible in it. But it will preform just like any other kind available. It's really easy to use and it is a very nice quality forge. You must have the propane torch to use it. That doesn't come with it. Just attach the propane to it and let it get to your desired temperature before you put your items into it. Fantastic quality and excellent price for it and the extras that you get. Highly recommend it for a beginner or anyone who doesn't do a lot of forging work. ... show more

  • Great for the hobbyist
This is a great forge for beginner, and it can be matched according to my own needs.

  • The power of good peer pressure
I was trying to find some fun things for my boys to do besides things that have screens. It's been hard because they will be interested in something but only for a short time. Believe me I've spent time and money pursuing options for them. Then without any effort on my part, they saw a few of their friends getting in to forging things. A couple of them even built forges in their back yards. My boys saw some of the finished products and got excited. Who knew? It was positive peer pressure (or a mother's prayers) that finally got them out of the basement. We haven't quite gotten to the point of building a forge so I wanted to start small. I've spent money on things in the past and then they didn't follow through and my money or time was wasted. So this was a good compromise. This allows them to have a similar experience and see if they are really going to like it or not and then we can invest more if they do. It also felt like a safer way to start out than having a roaring fire/coals in my back yard. Now we've got home made knives at our house. How cool! They also built a knife throwing board so they can try out their knives. I'm really liking this trend. Nice item and it helped us open new doors! ... show more

  • So far I'm have a rough time with this.
Not having much luck with this. It tips over based on your propane tank. You have to use a space below tank to be level. I had a hard time keeping lit. Would blow out easily. And it only heated up small area. I'll play with it more and update review If I have any better luck with it.

  • Cute little forge but needs modifications to be useful
This is a TINY, very portable forge, barely long enough to heat the average pocket knife. My partner thought it might be a good starter forge for one of the beginning bladesmiths he teaches. And it will be...with some modifications. This little forge is less than 7 inches long and only about 8 inches high (not counting the handle). It's well-constructed; unlike cheaper small forges that are open at both ends, it's well-capped at the back. It comes lined with a thick ceramic fiber blanket, and a small refractory brick that can be set inside the forge to hold the metal you're forging. It arrived well-packaged and ready to use; all that was needed was an actual torch to fit into the collar on the side of the forge. That was a problem: Our standard MAPP gas torch tip wouldn't fit into the hole. He had to remove the tip entirely, and insert the end without a tip. Over time, that will damage the torch, so he shut things down and has been making plans to modify the forge to be useful. MAPP gas is expensive; a single bottle costs about $10 and lasts maybe 6 hours with careful use. We spend roughly the same amount on a 20-lb propane tank that would power that forge for 4 to 5 times as long. So he'll modify the fuel hole to accept a homemade venturi burner that runs on propane. It will give better heat and save lots of money in the long run. If the manufacturer could do the same, that would be wonderful. ... show more

  • Works well.
I got this forge for my son who is looking at becoming a blacksmith. He says it works really well and was not that hard to set up. Nor was it hard to set up according to him.

  • Tiny but works
Our son wanted to begin crafting his own knives and needed a beginner's furnace to get started. Even though it is tiny, it works for what he is needing for now. I am sure if he gets further into the hobby, he will need something bigger but for now, this works just fine. If you are certain you are going to get serious about smelting, you may want to look bigger, but if the love just isn't there yet, this will be a decent choice. ... show more

  • A tool that can make tools.
Regarding my hobbies, sometimes I just need to soften something, reshape it, and then harden it or re-temper a cutting edge. It's virtually impossible to bring things, perhaps just screwdriver or a drill bit, to a controlled red heat in the open air, particularly with just a propane torch. Such is my current situation. This forge is small, it has a nice small chamber and, from the look of it I'm certain it can do the things I need done. I'm pleased with the construction. Haven't used it yet. There's not much to it, and not much could go wrong, but if it does I'll be back. ... show more
