  • Ridiculous, and ridiculously fun
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I bought this game for my son to occupy some of his time during the COVID-19 outbreak. He doesn't dislike it, but he has stuck with his Mario-themed games for the time being. I have been playing "Playgrounds 2" quite a bit lately however. As others have mentioned, it is very reminiscent of NBA Jam, which I wore out in the 90's on Sega Genesis. I primarily play in the Season mode, and it's fun how they included a bunch of older players that I forgot about. The same "vintage" players appears on the different teams they played on throughout their careers, and a neat touch is that it appears their abilities mirror the ebb and flow of whatever they were when they played on those teams, i.e. Shaq on the Magic and Lakers is more juiced up than older Shaq on the Heat. Seeing the old throwback uniforms is a nice touch also. The games are fast paced, and last about 5 minutes in real time. The dunks are silly, everyone can shoot the lights out, and the whole thing is just a spectacle really. My only complaint is that the game doesn't include many players starting out in the Season mode, and it takes a crap ton of points to unlock them. I was actually forced to play my first season with the Bullets because they were literally ther only team that had 2 unlocked players. That's pretty ridiculous honestly. I am sure this was done on purpose in order to generate extra revenue, but again, it's ridiculous. I still love this game though. I haven't played video games in years, and am enjoying the heck outta this one. I also picked up NBA 2K18 because it was cheap. It's a lot of fun also, but I can't figure out how to win, and it doesn't grab my imagination like Playgrounds 2. ... show more

  • A really fun NBA Jam style game
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
My two boys (10, 7) and I have had a lot of fun playing this game - trying to learn all the moves and plays. It can be frustrating at times, but overall the game play is fun. Learning how to shoot with the 3-point contest is key.

  • This game is a blast, but...
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
This game is fun and everything you want it to be. Just know that this game is $15 but put it in your mind that it is $35. I say this because yes you can grind it out to unlock players, and I mean grind. But i didn’t feel like doing that so I spend $20 to get coins to unlock the whole roster. I knew this going in so I’m not surprised. I thought I was gonna just grind it out, but not only are two no name players unlocked per team, but not every team is unlocked which is crazy. I know I wrote a lot of negative. But if you go into this game knowing that it’s $35 or $15 with grinding. You can really have lots of fun with it like I am. I still think it’s a five star game bc I knew what I was getting into Update: after playing for a day I got 13,000 basketballs (currency you use to unlock packs). You could probably manage without spending the extra 20 to unlock the whole roster. Again. I didn’t mind spending it. ... show more

  • A Modern Day NBA Jam
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I'm an 80s kid, so I grew up on SNES and SEGA Genesis where NBA Jam was the epitome of video game basketball. This game feels a lot like NBA Jam from yester-century in that it's a 2v2 arcade-style NBA game with big headed ballers (literally) and turbo (stamina) system. Compared to NBA Jam, they've added alley-oops, double alley-oops, and even self-alley oops, a power-up (lottery) system, a skillful timing-based shot/dunk system, and a collectible cards-style progression system. The card progression system is where players unlock additional courts, apparel, and most importantly new NBA players. The roster is deep, going back to legendary players long retired and in some cases deceased (RIP Kobe). This system is a bit of a double edged sword, IMO, as you can spend an exorbinate amount of in-game currency (baller bucks earned by player performance, or gold from using IRL money) to unlock specific players... or you can roll the dice by buying booster packs, like you would a collectible card game (e.g. Magic The Gather, Yu-Gi-Oh). You can expect roughly enough in-game currency to buy a single legendary character (20-25K baller bucks) just by completing a single NBA season, which is roughly 2 hours of gameplay. I've probably around 10-12 hours in the game so far, and many teams are still off-limits to me because I haven't unlocked the requisite 2 players minimum to use the team. Other than that, there's a bit of a learning curve, which isn't expected from an arcade-style system. Expect even the easiest AI to beat you silly for the first 5-10 games, especially if you're doing doubles with another newbie. The game is still relatively easy to pick-up for newcomers, but difficult to master. I can imagine this being a huge hit in 2v2 head to heads with local multiplayer. Overall, highly recommend this game. ... show more

  • Fun
Platform For Display: Nintendo Switch Edition: Standard
I have a lot of fun playing this game. I like to unlock the players by earning it. This game you play a season and earn points to buy packs of cards. The cards represent players. So if you open a pack and get the Legendary Michael Jordan, you now have him available to play with. Very fun game for the Switch for basketball fans. Has old and new players and they updated the rosters so it reflects the 19-20 Season. Lebron and AD are on the Lakers, Kyrie on the Nets, Kemba on the Celtics and so on. It's last years game but does not feel outdated. ... show more
