  • This Keyboard is worth every dollar due to Features, Quality, Feel, etc...
Style: S88 88-Key Keyboard
This was a hard call between the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 and the Akai Professional MPK88. The reason is because both keyboard provide amazing features and control. What set the two aparts was for me the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 has a much quieter key bed versus the Akai Professional MPK88. Don't get me wrong for the money you can't go wrong with both units as each one profide their Pro and Cons. However; I feel that the light guide on the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S88 is an amazing feature for those who are new to audio recording, piano playing and who plan to have a drum machine on the side. When I first open the keyboard I felt the box was pretty well made even though many people don't like the box for re-shipping but I think you can still keep it and resell the unit later on using the box. No problems, now as far as setting up the unit was a piece of cake, easy plug and play pretty much. I have tested this on an older Mac Book Pro laptop 2012 version model. Seems to work perfectly well, with Pro Logic X and Cubase 8.5. I even did a run test using Ablenton Live 9 Trial. A little setup needed to be don using the MIDI Mapping tool for the other DAW softwares. ***Will continue to update later on once I spend more time with the unit. Will be also testing it under Windows 10 laptop. Pros: * Free KINETIC TREATS and $25.00 E-VOUCHER * Heavy Weighted Keys * Display control input amazing and clear, beautiful design * Very Professional Look on the keyboard and feel * Nice effect slider on the side unlike the traditional design of having dual wheels. * Native Instruments Kompete 11 software nice additional bundle with the keyboard and lots of free sounds from the website user account. * Not as heavy as other 88 key controllers. Cons: * No Drum Pads for finger drumming. * Native Instruments Komplete 11 Decent package but if you want the Ultimate Edition you need to pay for the upgrade. * No Hammer-Action like a grand piano or real piano. * Require another additional power source unlike other 88 key controller that are powered via USB only. My Final Thoughts: I would say it was worth every dollar to get this keyboard as it should last you a very long time. My setup is amazing, my kids love it, I love it, and my wife enjoys playing it. She is a classical piano player so her requirements and state is a bit different than those who are into audio engineering. My Setup: * Laptop: Apple Mac Book Pro Mid 2012 model (macOS Sierra) 8GB Memory, 500GB HDD, * Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Studio (1st GENERATION) Audio Interface and Recording Bundle * DAW: Cubase 8.5 LE, Pro Logic X * JBL LSR 305 Studio Monitor Pair ... show more

  • Awesome Product, Installation & Support Still In The Dark Ages
Style: S61 61-Key Keyboard
I love this keyboard. It has a fantastic feel (it uses a Fatar keybed, a very high quality component). It has a semi-weighted action with aftertouch, and in weight feels somewhat similar to a DSI Mopho x4 or Akai MPK-261, but to my hands feels even nicer. It functions both as a straight up MIDI controller, like any other, but also as an NKS controller, which is kind of like MIDI on steroids. NKS is a protocol that allows the keyboard to physically reflect and interact with numerous virtual instrument attributes that MIDI can't do by itself, such as visualizing instrument class or organ register right on the keyboard. Auto-mapped parameter labels and values are visible on the keyboard as well. It's very cool, and, though not *entirely* necessary, does make things easier and more seamless. The keyboard comes with the rights to NI's "Komplete Select," which is a bundle of a bunch of really nice virtual instruments. The price definitely reflects this software, and the keyboard would be overpriced without it. Still, even if one already had this software or didn't care for it, I could understand why it might be worth it for the keyboard alone -- it's my favorite keyboard controller on the market. So why only 3 stars? Two reasons: 1) Native Instruments support bites. They don't respond to direct email, and their forums are not nearly sufficient to work through basic issues. 2) The software installation process is horrible, and NI makes things so much more confusing than they need to be. It took me two days to work out the kinks. The documentation and web site don't match. You're supposed to use a horrid piece of garbage called Komplete Select Downloader, which should come with some kind of trigger warning and coupons for free vodka shots. It doesn't do parallel downloads, has no pause functionality, and throws up random errors for which solutions are not readily discoverable. Serial numbers that Native Instruments generates for you once you register your new keyboard may show up (falsely) as invalid when you try to enter them into this tool. For accessing software you supposedly own, this is unacceptable. They have a tool called Native Access, which you can find on their web site and which I recommend over the former downloading tool. You need to make sure to install the Kontakt player as well as the Reactor player in order to get all of the free instruments to work -- this is far from obvious to those new to the platform, and you can find yourself with weird "unable to load plugin" messages just because they don't take care to manage interdependencies. In summary: if NI bothered to make the software installation process humane, and actually staffed their support team, this product would be an easy five stars. ... show more

  • As a controller for Komplete, it's awesome.
Style: S49 49-Key Keyboard
I bought the keyboard along with an software upgrade (to Komplete 11 Ultimate). I couldn't be happier. Hardware works perfectly. The build quality is excellent and I have not experienced any basic functionality incompatibilities with other synth modules. (Will update this review as I gain more experience.) So, I've been using this keyboard for a year, and I love it. I know people have gripes with it, but I'm super happy. I'm certainly not a pro, but it does everything I need (and more). The Komplete software is just awesome, and I have friends in the industry that use it liberally. You cannot distinguish some of the synth sounds from real instruments. The Abbey Road drum kit is, like, perfect for my ears. ... show more

  • Velocity is superb! Runs smooth in audio recording.
Style: S61 61-Key Keyboard
Can receive viral software and stop working. That's okay. I still managed to use it. The build quality is superb! Each stroke of the key is hitting the right velocity. Not a POS m-audio. Runs smooth in feedback response.
