We bought this because of its compromise between size, cost, and number of notes. For a beginner steel tongue drummer, this is ideal and much better than smaller diameter variants. It has more depth of sound as a result of the larger diameter and height, and it's significantly louder than the smaller versions. Having 13 notes means more melodies are playable and drummers can explore more complex or creative techniques. Sound quality is great, no scratchy tinny artifacts when struck properly, and the vibrations and reverb are silky smooth. Overall, we are impressed with this instrument!

The main headline is that when you hit a note on this, you get a LOT of overtones. It's pretty messy sounding. This isn't tuned like a steel drum common in Caribbean music that has one or two overtones. Because it is mostly enclosed underneath (there is a hole with a removable rubber plug "mute" that cuts a bit of the volume but not the resonance), hitting any of the pitched tabs results in the others vibrating a big. This would be less of a problem if this didn't have every pitch in the scale, so getting the 7th resonating when you hit the tonic makes for a fairly chaotic experience. We stuffed a hand towel in there and experimented with different positioning so that it is pressing on the tabs enough to prevent them from vibrating unless they're the ones being struck. This cuts a lot of the sustain on the notes, but the only other alternative we could find is to use your hand to mute every other note that you're not playing, which is...not awesome. Things to like: Mallets: The mallets are just right for this. They're lightweight and reasonably well-made. We tried yarn mallets (too quiet) and brass (yikes, very jarring) and larger rubber ones but these small rubber ones are just right. Construction and Finish: No sharp edges I've found so far. The paint color is nice, the rubber feet are good, the rubber mute plug is good. Note Choice: It's nice that it goes down from the 1 to a low 6 so you can play in the relative minor (Dm in this case), and a low 5 so you can play a two-feel. Then it goes up and includes an octave note. So lots to work with here. Volume: The volume is just right for this, I think. You're not going to be jamming out in a band without a mic on this, but it's good if you're doing little meditation music or letting a kid ding dong happily. Things I Don't Like: Excessive Overtones: As mentioned above, this is the biggest drawback. For some uses it might be a feature but to me it's an annoyance. Finger Tappers: The little rubber rings with bulges in them might be useful if you're trying to play this as absolutely quietly as you can, because they don't make much noise unless you whack it with your finger so hard it hurts.

The item arrived with two broken drumsticks so it was not possible to even play it or test the sound properly. Contacted Amazon for help and they couldnt help me at all with getting new drumsticks. BAD experience all around....... dont waste your money.....
