We love the larger Story Orchestra books, but my baby wants to read them with the older kids and he tends to tear or bend the pages of the books. I have always thought they should make a board book version, and this is exceptional! The beautiful illustrations are just like the large version, and the buttons are even easier for little hands to push. It has a switch to turn off the sound on the back and I appreciate the screw that secures the button battery in place so little hands can’t access it. It has a very short, simple version of the storyline which is perfect for the attention span of my one-year-old. I am so grateful for Story Orchestra and these beautiful books that help my kids fall in love with wonderful stories, music, and artwork! Currently only this book and Swan Lake have been released in board books, but I hope Story Orchestra will continue to release board book versions of all the classics they have published! ... show more

I bought this for my daughter’s Charlotte Mason music education to introduce the Nutcracker music (obviously). I gave it to her literally yesterday, and she’s only used it for short times with close supervision, and one of the music buttons has already stopped playing its music. Super disappointed—the book itself is beautiful and she absolutely ADORED it!! She’s pretty devastated, and I feel like I wasted the money. ... show more

My 2 year old loves this book. Illustrations are intriguing and it’s a nice introduction to the story of the nutcracker ballet. The music clips on each page have a nice sound quality, but unfortunately the buttons stopped working for no apparent reason just a few weeks after purchasing. About two months after purchasing, only 2 buttons in the book continue to work. ... show more

This is a lovely book for children. The pictures are colorful and enticing, and the short bit of music that plays are memorable stanzas from the ballet. It is a terrific exposure to some classical music and shows. My only complaint is the button to press on each page seems a bit small and can be hard to press or be unnoticeable as it blends into the wonderful pictures, But it gets the job done and I would highly recommend this book and the whole series to anyone wanting their young child to become familiar with some of the classics. The age range for this book is quite variable, in my opinion, so don't hesitate to think a younger child and a slightly older child wouldn't enjoy it. They will. My very independent 2yo loves these books, and she particularly loves that she can use this one all by herself! We also have a couple of the larger Story Orchestra picture books for older kids, which my 2yo is allowed to use only with adult help/supervision (too large/paper too fragile for my rough and impatient toddler, and we don't allow her to have the big ones when she's super tired/cranky to begin with). The sound quality on the board book is not quite as good as the sound quality on the larger books. But that's mostly a reflection of how good the sound quality is on the larger books. The sound on the board book is a little bit tinny, but no worse than playing music from laptop speakers. The sound quality in the larger books is remarkably good. The one thing I really don't like in the Nutcracker board book is the choice to use the marzipan/mirliton/reed flute music for the page where they travel through the land of the snow. Sure, the reed flute music is particularly famous, but it comes much later in the ballet, and the page shows dancers dressed as snowflakes! A strange and disappointing choice, as I really like the snow music (used correctly for the same illustration in the larger book). Otherwise, though, the music selections are solid. The book is very engaging, and I actually prefer the simplified text in the board book editions. We've had the board books a couple of weeks and no problems with the sound so far. There is an on/off switch on the back of each board book. We turn it off when we're done using it for the moment, and turn it back on when we're ready to use it again. My 2yo loves pushing the buttons to play the music, and the board book is sturdy enough for her sometimes rough handling. ... show more

    • The Music Stops Working Very Quickly

The illustrations are very cute. The problem is with the music. I opened the book and turned on the sound as directed. The six musical selections worked fine at first. Then one by one they stopped working as the night wore on (this is over the course of less than one hour.) After an hour, only two of the musical selections were still working.
