The ball takes 3 AAA batteries, but they come with the ball. You just have to remove the tape for connection. The ball is small enough for my 1 year old grandson to be able to grab and throw. It states 6-12 months but for a 6 month old it doesn’t play music when she rolls it. Need to throw on ground to make noise. Also too big for her to throw. She is wobbly on feet so can’t gauge with kicking but probably not yet The colors are nice and bright and sounds good when get to play. It’s soft and light.
