Top Amazon Reviews

  • This Generic Sandpaper Compares Reasonably Well to the Brand Name Products
I put this review in the context of having used other brand equivalents of the same product. In fact, I used two other brands before I purchased this product, photos of all three of which I have included for comparison. I will comment on the photos now early in discussion, so anyone interested need not read my entire commentary before getting to a discussion of the photos for the purpose of context. The first photo is that of the single sample 80 grit sanding sheet that came with the Ryobi Corner Cat sander that I was using on my project. It shows how the sheet appeared after about five hours' use sanding a very rough surfaced deck to remove stain that could not be removed with chemical treatments alone. The second and third photos are two different sheets of the Diablo brand that was all that was offered at the big box store where I purchased the sander (that product is also sold here on Amazon). The first of the two shows the condition of one sheet after only about 45 minutes of use. The second of the two shows the condition of a second sheet after only about 1/2 hour. Of note, with this being the primary reason for including the second photo of the same brand, I was amazed to see how far this hook and loop (Velcro style) backed sanding sheet could slide from where it started after only 1/2 hour's use. I had positioned it carefully prior to use so that it was closely centered on the platen, and after only half an hour, it had slid almost a half inch away at the tip. The fourth photo is taken of the Mido brand that I am reviewing here, after two and a half hours use. That represents only half the time I used the Ryobi brand sheet but several times the duration of use of the Diablo brand, and I decided to replace it at that point simply because I had received so many sheets and I had a limited amount of work yet to do, so I thought I'd just as well replace the sheet even though it was still cutting well. To put it flatly, the Diablo brand was of very poor quality, at least in the context of use to which I put it, while the Mido brand was similar in quality and durability to the brand name product from Ryobi, the manufacturer of the sander. To be fair, I must put this discussion in the context of the use I have put the sandpaper to, because I imagine any of them could be fine in a less demanding job. Specifically, I am re-staining the deck off the back of my house. To expect a fresh coat of stain to adhere well, the former coat must be removed entirely, so the stain can absorb into the fibers of the lumber. The project has been more of a disaster than I ever expected, because it turned out both that the deck, as part of a house I purchased about thirty years after it was built, was constructed out of ordinary nominal lumber, rather than the current norm of using pressure treated lumber, and it was finished with a sort of stain that is peculiarly opaque and poorly responsive to typical chemical stain strippers. I started with the Brand stripper of one of the big box stores, and it did practically nothing. I investigated online and found another brand that was rated very highly, and it did a considerably better job, but was far from complete, despite it requiring the use of a power washer, which even with care was very rough on the aging nominal lumber, so I could not hope to push it to a point that the stain was completely removed, and significant damage had been done to the wood just in trying to do so with the power washer. I finally decided I would have to sand the surface of the deck, both to remove the last of the stain and to smooth out the surface of the wood that had been damaged, and that is how I ended up here. I used two sanders, a 3 x 18" belt sander to get most of the large areas as quickly as possible and a Ryobi Corner Cat sander to get into corners and up against horizontal surfaces that I could not bring a belt sander close enough to. It also turned out to be a more efficient way to focus on some areas of stain that had not been removed in some areas of the length of the boards than the belt sander had done. The belt sander is not part of the review, but I should comment it worked well without any difficulty with the sanding bands I used. The Corner Cat was another thing in that regard, at least in terms of the paper sanding pads used, and that is the primary focus of my discussion here. The corner cat came with several sample sanding pads, but only one of them was of a coarse enough grit for the purpose at hand (all of these discussed were 80 grit). I used it and got a full five hours of use out of it before it started cutting less efficiently and I decided to change to a different pad. In fact, the big box store where I purchased the sander did not carry the Ryobi brand sanding pads but only a single brand, Diablo, that they carry in sanding products as well as circular saw and table saw blades, so I purchased a box of five of them when I bought the sander and hoped it would prove adequate to finish the project. I predicted hopefully, since it was the only brand the big box store carried, that it would prove to be similar in quality to the product provided in the box by Ryobi with their sander. It turned out to be a sorry prediction. As my photos show, the Diablo product, which is, again, also offered here on Amazon, was not at all up to the job. The backing paper was so much flimsier than that of the Ryobi product, that small pieces of it were tearing off and getting stuck in loose bits of the sanded wood, making a mess that was a bit difficult to straighten out and a distraction while I was focused on sanding. Beyond that, I noticed that the sanding grits were peeling right off the backing, and the first two sheets I used had become useless after only part of an hour each. I'd come to recognize that shortcoming by the end of that first day's work and went on Amazon's site to see what was offered, in hopes that I could get something that would last longer and function better and allow me to finish the work without changing pads repeatedly in less than an hour like that. I would have needed to purchase two or three more boxes of the Diablo product to finish the job as it had been going! It was so bad, I had another three pieces of the Diablo product left, and I didn’t even want to bother to use them. I should acknowledge that when I investigated, I was troubled to find that Amazon did not even offer the Ryobi brand. The ironic thing is that I purchased the Mido product I am reviewing, after reading what the ads said about perhaps a half dozen similar products they carry, half-presuming that it would be of no better quality than the Diablo product, but at least aware I would get enough pieces at an affordable price that I would not be paying an arm and a leg to finish the job or having later to wait for arrival of yet another delivery. I truly bought it primarily because it was inexpensive, and I would receive enough sheets that I could almost certainly complete the project without having to buy more. I had to take a day off from the project waiting for the delivery, but I got back to work with the Mido sanding pads just yesterday, and I was amazed. These sanding pads really cut into the stained wood powerfully and durably, the sanding grain did not get stripped off the paper promptly in use, as had happened so dramatically with the Diablo product, and the paper backing was durable and did not tear apart as I worked. Again, the photo of the Ryobi sheet was after five hours, as opposed to only two and a half hours with the Mido sheet (obviously half the time), but the Mido sheet was still cutting fine and would certainly have continued to work for a considerable amount of time (so unlike the Diablo product), and I decided to change it only because so many pieces came in the purchase so inexpensively that I decided to finish the job using a second sheet even though it might not have been necessary at all. As such, I did not push it far enough to say this absolutely, but to my absolute surprise, I strongly suspect the Mido product would have worked and lasted fully as well and as long as the Ryobi brand or close to it. One final potentially important comment, where I will again make a comment regarding the poor quality of the Diablo product, while that is not the primary focus of my review. The Ryobi and Diablo products are devised so as to be useful with two different sorts of sander, one which like the Ryobi Corner Cat uses the full sheet, that is shaped almost like a small flat-iron. The other is a sander with a much smaller triangular sanding pad that uses only a small triangular portion at the front end of these sanding pads (the division can be seen fairly clearly in the photos). As a first comment, again regarding comparative quality, the Ryobi pad, while scored so as to allow this separation for use on the smaller sander, had the separation cut in a way that the full sheet remained intact in use on the larger, Corner Cat sander, without any apparent, unintended separation even after five hours' use. On the other hand, the Diablo product was so deeply cut for this purpose that it represented a weakness on the Corner Cat, with the sanding pad tearing early in use along the separation line, as is plainly seen in the photos. Aside from that comment regarding quality, the bigger issue in this context regarding the Mido product that I am reviewing, though, is that it is not cut in any manner that would allow it to be used for the smaller sander type. It is meant to be used only as the full sheet, for sanders like the Corner Cat, unless perhaps the user wanted to mark and cut it by hand for use on the smaller, triangular head sander. Given the quality of this paper for the low price, it might even be worth considering that, but cutting sandpaper is tricky and abrasively damaging to the tools used in cutting it. ... show more

  • Very impressed with these.
I was skeptical that these might be inferior compared to the expensive ones at H. Depot, but they were absolutely just as good! They do not ware out any quicker. I highly recommend them.

  • OK
You will have to use a ton of them to get the job done. Holes do not lineup correctly so dust gets everywhere. The adhesion is really poor so after 4 min you will need another sandpaper.

  • Works great
The only thing about these is that they don’t stay on the sander too well after a while.
