  • Affordable compact way to get into Moog with some nice digital features too.
Size: Subsequent 25
There are lots of reviews that explain how to use this (check out looploop on YouTube) so I’ll focus on things that I think help you make a decision if this is right for you, your level of experience and how it fits into your current set up. I will say this is an excellent synth for beginners. Mainly because it is so compact, and the limitations on the front panel force you into really understanding signal flow, how to use and modulate your oscillators and it even comes with some presets. The build quality is just superb. It’s a bit heavy but it just feels fantastic. The knobs are like butter with just the right amount of resistance and it’s just a very playable synth. Great for sound design and baselines. One thing worth mentioning is it doesn’t have a hold or arpegiator built in. But this is great when paired with your computer. Simply send midi in and you can do much of this through your pc/Mac. The real sacrifices you make with this is for the compact size. The sound quality is great. Classic moog filter that just feels great. Be sure to read into the additional features with the companion software but I think you’ll get a few weeks easily just using it by itself. The keybed is small (but I think this is the point) but you can easily extend this by plugging a midi keyboard into it... it’s pretty darn impressive for the size of the unit. If you want something with more features and voice versatility you are going to have to sacrifice studio space and go for the 37 or the matriarch, but I really loved what I could get out of this thing for the size. You can update all the presets to whatever you want with the downloadable software. Just make sure you have a usb cable long enough to reach the unit so you can always take advantage of the computer based work flow. My only real complaint is I really wish they would have added a hold/drone control so you can just dive into notes, but if you add a 10 second release, it’s still pretty close. The multi drive on this thing is just delicious. Use it to push all your oscillators and give them just a blanket wrapped gritty warmth that doesn’t sound distorted. Just blows my mind. Also will note; turn your oscillators and multi drive down and bump up the master volume...they still sound beautiful when not being pushed. If you are looking for more versatility and control on the unit itself you will need to look into something bigger, but for as compact as this is (in synth world) it’s a pretty amazing and beautiful sounding machine. Pair this with the matriarch and you practically have a full band. ... show more

  • Stellar budget semi-modular with true Moog sound
I'll try to keep this one brief for everyone's benefit. For those looking to get their feet wet with semi-modular synths, this is the fun box for you. Really rich sound that ranges from soft and gentle to raw and tearing. A lot of patch potential for such a small synth. Very enjoyable hands-on experience. For those looking to expand their gear with something from Moog for the price of a single eurorack module, look no further. 1 VCO, 1LFO, 4 step Moog ladder filter, VCO mod, 13 button keyboard, 12 patch points, AD envelope. Thought it would be eclipsed by my 2nd and 3rd synth acquisitions (Neutron, Model D) but it remains an integral part of my flow. What it does, it does best. ... show more

  • It's a Moog. What else do you need to know? LOL!
Size: Subsequent 25
I am a beginner keyboardist. I've always been a strong "prog-rock" or "art-rock" fan, so that meant I have to have at least 2 of the 3 "necessary" keyboards: a Mellotron, a Moog, and a Hammond. I bought the M4000D Mellotron in October; I can not afford a mini-Moog, or even a Subsequent 37, so I "settled" for the Subsequent 25. (I looked into many other synths...there are quite a few with more features for the price, but they are not Moogs.) So I sprung for the Subsequent 25 and I absolutely recommend it. Physically, it is a gorgeous instrument. You can tell it is solid and well-crafted. It has lots and lots of power and versatility. And the sound? I'm very, very biased, and have been since the first time I heard a Moog (on "Lucky Man" by ELP in 1970). The sound is absolutely FAT. Nothing sounds quite like a Mellotron; nothing sounds quite like a Moog, either. (The Hammond is gonna have to wait...maybe forever.) ... show more

  • Beginner or Advanced: Must Buy, Must Have, MUST BUY, MUST HAVE!!!
I'm non-electronic/engineer type. Can use computers okay, and look things up. This was an easy and informative kit build (no soldering/meter needed), and the CLEAREST best documentation for learning EVER. I understood the concepts of CV &c. within minutes of reading the manual which is so well written, clear, understandable for the non-music/engineer type. I never grasped modular synth architecture until this device, and now feel confident leveraging it. Moog, well played, well played. Start an international education project. Seed these to developing populations ... make a gofundme for international analogue music creativity .. seriously, this is the best money I've spent in decades. Other online reviews attest to the "Moog authenticity" or beefiness of it's sounds, they're right ... and I'm only 9 hrs into playing with this thing and I had to stop and write this review. ... show more

  • An unusual synthesizer
Size: Subharmonicon
This thing is wild. It will take you places musically that you wouldn’t have gone otherwise. This is a generative music machine. My only complaint is that it needs better MIDI in and out.

  • Possibly the best compact classic analogue synth ever made and authentically Moog
Size: Matriarch
The choices Moog made in designing this relatively affordable unit were on the money. The combination of ready-to-use controls, plus 90 patch points, 4 classic oscillators plus LFO and Mod, allow you to recreate virtually all of the classic Moog sounds going back to the late 1960's through to today. Add in a sophisticated arpeggiator, sequencer, full Midi (including USB), and a wealth of global parameters that can be manipulated to change the way the synth operates, you have the best of all worlds. A genuine, unadulterated analog signal, with digital tech under the hood to help you manage it and control it and use the outstanding keyboard as a midi keyboard as well. Paired with an app like Logic Pro, there are limitless things a single artist can do in their own living room. I am glad I waited to buy a synth until now (had several Korgs and a DX7 as a kid - just a Yamaha Clavinoval last decade or so). This is a relatively new model and I cannot imagine anything more authentic and usable and this is coming from a relative amateur-hobbyist who is a lawyer for a living! ... show more
