  • Appears to be a good scope at a very reasonable price
Color: Flat Dark Earth
After doing a lot of research looking for a rifle scope with all of the features I was looking for, it seems that anything that had all those features was going to cost far more than I wanted to spend. Of course I looked at the Monstrum scopes, but was a bit put off by some of the comments from those that had reviewed them. After looking into the details of many of the complaints I decided to buy this G3 6-24x50 scope. I would have preferred to have the G3 3-18x50 but I could not find that scope in stock anywhere. The scope was well packed and in factory fresh sealed packing materials. It is surprisingly good looking. I happened to choose the Flat Dark Earth color to match my rifle, but discovered that is is a few shades darker than I expected. But it still looks good on the rifle. I did take one additional step before removing this from the box that it seems many other reviewers did not take. I read what instructions there were in the box before doing anything with the scope itself. I also viewed the Monstrum installation videos. There are only a few pages of instructions, but by reading them it appears that I have avoided the complaints that many have had. Everything is in the box that you need to mount the scope except perhaps some locktite for the mounting screws. I plan to get a slightly taller set of rings for this as the mounts that came with it are about 1/4 inch too low for me. The mounts use star screws and a wrench is included. If you take all the proper steps to correctly mount a scope it will take you a while to complete that step. It is particularly important to get the scope level on the rifle and that can take time and to do it right requires a rifle cradle to first level the rifle and hold it in place while mounting the scope. This appears to be one of the areas that others did not follow proper methods to complete. I did not find any of the issues related to the adjustments on this scope that were reported by others. The very first time one of the adjustments is turned they are hard to move. But if you establish that you are turning in the proper direction and then apply enough force to break them free, they seem to work just fine after that. I suspect that these are lubricated at the factory and the lubricant may bond over time if the scope sits for a while before being sold. Either way all the controls on this scope seem to work just fine. I particularly like the locking feature that requires pulling out on the adjustment and then pushing it down to lock it. The adjusters for reticule illumination and parallax are right beside each other on the left side of the scope. The cap to access the battery is in that same location. Some people reported that they could not turn the parallax adjustment without moving the illumination adjustment and/or unscrewing the battery cap. The first time I turned the parallax adjustment the illumination adjustment did move one click. But a few turns of the parallax knob solved this very quickly. Again I think this is due to the lubricant stiffening while awaiting unpacking and use. In any case all the adjustments on my scope appear to be working as designed and just as I expected. The is a first focal plain (FFP)scope. So any adjustment in magnification also magnifies the sighting reticle. This is a feature only found on higher end scopes that usually cost many times more than the Monstrum line of scopes. I like this a lot as it provides a scale of measurement that always matches the target. This allows the shooter to adjust for bullet drop and other factors before sending the round down range. Many reviewers complained about the illumination of the reticle being useless in daylight. First, the manufacturer says right in the description that the illuminated reticule if ONLY for low light conditions. But frankly, I had no trouble seeing the illumination except when pointed at very bright backgrounds. If I was aiming into a shadow or across dark objects like tree bark, the illumination is clearly visible and could be useful where lighting conditions vary across the scale if bright to dark. I am reluctant to say too much as to clarity of the view. For my eyes it is very clear. I did not see any of the fogging reported by other reviewers, nor did I have any issue with getting the reticle in clear focus. Only at the most Extream end of the magnification scale did I see anything that detracted from the view through the scope, and I believe that was caused by glasses and not the scope. Another complaint others had was an inability to zero the adjustment turrets after getting the scope zeroed. I have not had range time with this scope yet and i will happily update this review when i have. But i had no problem removing the caps on the adjusters and replacing them as i wished. It seems to me that those who could not do this may not know how it is done, on these scopes as i have seen different ways of doing this with different scopes. Either way resetting zero is not a problem. I have to stop at this point as i need to shoot the rifle to complete this review. But so far this appears to be a great buy. A lot of expensive features ad a very reasonable price. I would recommend this scope so far, and will report back after I have fire the rifle. ... show more

  • Impressive for price
Color: Black
I'll say I was sceptical with it's price point that it might be crappy to look through. But pleasantly surprised, obviously it's clearer on lower power but even zoomed in the focus is nice and it's very comparable to four and five hundred dollar scopes I have love the push pull turrets. I feel like eliminated recitals are unnecessary but I'm sure they have there place. I do wish at full zoom the center dot was smaller for some reason. But I understand why with the first focal it needs to get bigger just seems to look very large when you are shooting long range targets. It's a little hard to get your eye relief just right but again for the price it's outstanding I would seriously consider it you want to save a little money over something close in price. Also should mention I like the moa pattern and I personally consider the patern of the sight as critical as the clarity. If your taking long shots and you don't do it for a job. They help judge the shot very well. ... show more

  • Good scope reliable
Color: Black
Good scope hold zero nicely. Stiff zoom. Good parallax focus. Hard to find your target at higher zooms. I would look at Athalon or Element for better glass clarity. Overall a good long lasting scope for the price.

  • G2 is good, thinking the G3 might be better!
Color: Flat Dark Earth
Update: I emailed Monstrum about the adjustment issues and they immediately replaced the scope! Box drill is now spot on. I'm more than 500 rounds with it and the only thing that could make me happier would be a different reticle (I'm still not a fan of a dot at the center for long range applications). I still have the same setup and love it. The biggest factor when it comes to accuracy is now me. Original: I purchased this scope because I liked my G2. Everything is as advertised and I’m pretty happy. I’m not rating 5 stars (yet), because I’m not the happiest with the reticle and there appears to be greater shifts in impact than what should be predicted with the windage and elevation adjustments. A plus at this time is that with a 20 MOA base there is 56 MOA of available elevation adjustment up from my 100 yard zero. This gives me adjustment to 1200 yards with 308WIN according to my ballistic calculator. Test 1 - Fit & Finish: Good overall, as I have come to expect. Sturdy, smooth controls that actually feel a little better than my G2. Windage has 46 MOA of adjustment and elevation has 68 MOA of adjustment. The stops on these are not what feels like a hard stop. More like they get tight at the end. I have not wanted to crank hard on them to see if they will go any farther. On 6x there is a shadow that presents on the edge of the field of view at the far limits of adjustment that clears up as the reticle is moved toward the center of the mechanical range. This shadow is not seen at higher powers. The kill-flash has a tighter honeycomb than the one that came with the G2. This first focal plane reticle is disappointment at the moment. The G2 has nice fine lines that cross with fine marks for single MOA for elevation and every two MOA for windage. This G3 reticle has thicker lines with dot marks every MOA that stop just before the cross with a wide 1/2 MOA dot in the center. This dot is big enough to obscure longer range targets (1/2 MOA is roughly 5” at 1000 yards). Not what I was hoping for in a long range scope. Test 2 - Reticle Allignment and Zero: Using a plumb line, the reticle appears well aligned to the scope body with no appreciable deviation. Predictable adjustment to attain zero that has held for 60 rounds of 308WIN so far. Test 3 - Box Drill: Scope predictability moves point of impact with windage and elevation adjustments and returns to zero. The adjustments appear to move more than the 1/4 MOA per click. Adjustment 12 MOA up from zero resulted in a 14” shift in impact at 103 yards and adjusting 12 MOA down from zero and at the limit of adjustment (scope mounted on a 20 MOA base) moved impact 13.5”. Current setup: Mounted on an AR-10 variant chambered in .308 WIN, UTG 13 space 20 MOA base, Vortex low rise rings, Monstrum rubberized lens caps. ... show more
