  • Stories my Beloved
Style: Wings of Ruin
Monster Hunter Stories is a series that means a lot to me. I played the first game back in middle school, and it was the one thing I looked forward to every day after finishing my homework. I watched the anime and logged at least 600 hours on the 3DS before I stopped playing it when highschool came around, but once I heard the first announcement about a sequel? I was hyped. Sadly I lost my original 3DS copy, so I bought another, and revisited the first game to enjoy it again. Worth the 50 something hours I poured into revisiting the story and endgame. Now, this sequel... Isn't much of a direct sequel to the first game, which is not a bad thing. New stories are more welcoming to new players! Which is good, you don't have to play the first game to enjoy this one. (Even though I would have personally liked a sequel that doesn't just give a nod to the first game and make small references here and there... I'm happy enough with the returning characters though!) When Stories 2 came out, I couldn't put it down, I didn't sleep for at LEAST 3 days. That's how hyped I was and how much enjoyment this game got (and still gets) out of me. I will admit, the pacing of the story threw me off, it was GOOD- but it felt rushed at some parts, which kind of put it off for me, specifically near the end of the story; (to be fair, I didn't sleep at all, perhaps I was just speedrunning, lol) I feel like a slower paced story would have helped this game better, especially since it's more or less a brand new plot not necessarily involved with that of the Black Blight (first game). That's just my preference though, this story is easily enjoyable and I had a good time watching my character grow and interact with the other characters throughout the story. I already enjoy turn-based RPGs by default, and the fact that they kept most of the mechanics from the first game made me really happy! I love the addition of the damage types, and being able to carry 3 weapons per battle instead of 1. The new "quick finish" option is very nice too and saves a lot of time if you're lacking easy materials. This game has a good amount of monsties (monsters that you can hatch and have in your party) in it's roster, currently at 141 as I write this, including the new palamutes! There's more monsties to come too as well, such as Soulseer Mizu and Hellblade Glavenus, to name a few. My only problem with this game was the "sequel" thing I mentioned earlier, if I'm being completely honest. It's just a small gripe I have with having to play the "new rider" again, I would have personally liked to have been able to play my old character (somehow), or maybe a hunter that becomes a rider, or something like that! One problem I can imagine players having is with the level design. The environments are BEAUTIFUL, but the level designs of the dens can get very repetitive, which doesn't bother me personally. (Also kinda wish the volcanic area had more catavans!... lol) There's also slight frame rate issues in certain towns (cough cough, Rutoh), but not enough to ruin the game. In my opinion anyway, if that intimidates you then get it on Steam. I was easily able to run this game on PC with a mediocre i5 HP desktop, if it gives any insight :v Overall I just REALLY enjoy this game, the mechanics are fun, the visuals are great, and the battle system really grows on you. I loved watching this story unfold and it was definitely worth losing the sleep, lmao. Currently have 200 hours into this game! If you're looking for a fun turn based RPG then definitely give Stories 2 a try. :) ... show more

  • Super fun game
Style: Wings of Ruin
This will be a spoiler review, no caution needed. I'll only be talking about what is known from the trailers and game played shown prior to release! This is the second installment of a fun turn based spin off of the Monster Hunter franchise. Instead of being a hunter you're a rider! A person who makes bonds with monsters, monsties to be specific. You obtain monsties by finding monster dens and collecting eggs from the nests inside, not all monsters can be monsties but the majority of the monsters in the game can be. And instead of 14 weapo options you only have 6, 2 of each weapon type. 2 blade like weapons, 2 pierce weapons and 2 blunt weapons. The heart of the game is the intricate game play, every monster has different attack patterns that you have to pay attention too, you have to know their weapon weaknesses and a bunch of other important things. It's a simple rock paper scissor format, power attacks, technical attack and speed attacks but it gets very deep and fun. There's a much of other stuff I can ramble on about but I'll wrap it up here, like the fun and we'll developed characters, nice world building, intense and complicated gene stuff, a somewhat awesome story and a bunch more. If any of that sounds good then game this game a try, and it has a demo too! I'm not sure if it's still a but if it is you should try it! Thanks it from me, thanks for reading! ... show more

  • Great sequel and game
Style: Wings of Ruin
I am not sure why Monster Hunter Stories didn't get better coverage when the original game came out. Its a super fun game with tons and tons of content. I have both the iphone and 3DS version. I am still playing it today. I was super excited about MHS2 and bought it on pre-order announcement. I got my copy today, but I have been playing the free demo. The story is great so far. I like that it has connection with the first game. The graphics are upgraded form 3DS of course and it looks more like the iphone version. I have not seen any performance issues that reviews have mentioned. There are some great quality of life enhancements, which I like better than the first one. Although the touch screen on 3DS is always useful. If you are an RPG fan or MH fan, buy this game. For some MH fans, they may be turned off because its not a traditional MH game but its just fun!. I think people that like Pokemon or Dragon Quest would enjoy this game, as well. While this game looks like a game for younger audience (and it could very well be an introduction for younger audiences) it still has great content for adult gamers and the challenge does ramp up as you go along. ... show more

  • Amazing!
Style: Wings of Ruin
Absolutely a gem of a game soo many people need to play this game. It has all the charm from the first one plus some. The story was very fun and was long too which is a good thing in my book. It easily can give you +100 hours of fun completing everything which means a lot because I don’t usually complete everything in a game but the visuals, music, and gameplay really motivates me to keep going for that 100% completion. I hope you get as enough fun when you play as I do if you do chose to play this game. RIDE ON! ... show more

  • A lot of fun
Style: Wings of Ruin
This was a fun game. The light RPG elements and a quirky cast of characters helps move the story along to its finish. Nothing overly memorable, still very enjoyable. Finding monster eggs and swapping genes around was pretty cool. It becomes tiresome though by the end of the game. There is a fair amount to do and hunt after the ending which is cool. Monsters in the beginning of the game you raise don't match up against later monsters in the game so the work I put into my favorite monsters was for not and they sat at the stable unused. I had to repeat the same process with new, not always as likeable monsters. Not the worst thing, it did put a damper on my excitement for heading in the generic randomly generated monster nests for eggs over and over. Overall great. Wish I had more control of the party in battles. Relying on the cpu characters can be a mixed bag. ... show more
