Description

When you want your bass down low, you need a subwoofer as part of your home audio/theater system. Monoprice has the basses covered with this 12 inch, 150 watt (RMS) Powered Subwoofer model! This 12" sub is capable of producing 150 watts RMS (200 watts peak) output. It has a frequency response range of 50 to 250 Hz with a low-pass crossover filter, which can be adjusted through the full range. Gain and frequency knobs on the control panel allow you to adjust the crossover filter and the power output for the optimum blend and balance of bass output with your stereo or surround speakers. The subwoofer has multiple input options, which allow it to be used with any existing stereo or 5.1 (or greater) amplifier system. For each input there is a corresponding output. High-level inputs accept a full-range signal from the amplifier's stereo speaker outputs. When connecting the unit as part of a 5.1 system, these would be taken off the Front Left and Front Right outputs in parallel to the standard pair of front speakers. The subwoofer provides its own power and includes impedance matching circuitry, so this will not reduce the power output to the front speakers or affect the overall impedance load on the amplifier. The High-Level output can be used to connect to your stereo/front speakers or you can connect them in parallel at the amplifier. Additionally, the subwoofer has a set of right/left Line Level inputs. If using a standard stereo system, without a special subwoofer output, you can connect these to the left and right line level outputs on the amp. The subwoofer will then combine the signals to process the mono bass signal it needs to drive the speaker. If you are using an amplifier with a single mono subwoofer line level output, simply use an RCA "Y" cable to split the output and send it to the two line level inputs on the subwoofer. The Line Level outputs can be used to daisy chain additional subwoofers to provide even more room-filling bass! The subwoofer is housed in an attractive wooden cabinet, with a black finish, and measures 17" x 17" x 16 7/8" (H x W x D). The driver fires out the front and is covered by a black cloth grill. A 3 1/2" sound port is positioned underneath the enclosure. An optional "Auto-On" function puts the subwoofer system into power-saving standby mode after about 2 minutes of no audio input detected. Alternatively, the "Auto-On" function can be disabled, allowing the unit to be on whenever the power switch is in the "on" position. A 2 amp/250 volt fuse protects the system from short circuits or power overloads.

  • Works well in a small room
Style: Subwoofer
My office is in our basement, a small 9'x8' room. I have an Italian Pine dining table as my desk, and the subwoofer sits underneath in the back left corner. I can feel the bass nicely in every spot of the room. It's not too powerful, it does exactly what this room demands without making everyone in the family mad at me. A more powerful and expensive subwoofer might be pleasing, but this one fills a nice gap and works well for way less. I appreciate it's value. I had a 2.1 setup, now this 2.1.1 setup (subwoofer wired to speaker outputs on an older Pioneer VSX, then my tower speakers wired to the sub outputs) makes it feel complete. I don't really need 5.1 afterall (only if $ and interests drive that direction in the future.) ... show more

  • Goes Deep
Style: Subwoofer
It really added some rumble to my 5.1 setup. It replaced an 8 inch down firing sub that moved to the bedroom. Now the bedroom sounds nice and the main system sounds a whole lot better and I couldn't be more pleased and you can't beat the price.

  • Great subwoofer for the money
Style: Subwoofer
This is an interesting combination of an excellent enclosure, a good speaker and a fair amplifier. If you want ample clean bass at a very reasonable price, this is a good choice. If you want earth-thumping bass then buy a more powerful subwoofer. The first unit I received had a constant annoying AC hum (3rd harmonic of 60 Hz), regardless of how I configured it, how I connected AC power, whether or which receiver I connected. I returned it and the replacement has barely audible background hum (with your ear a few inches from the speaker), which is fine for an amplifier in this price range. Using the line level inputs, the gain of this amplifier is barely adequate. My AV receiver allows me to independently adjust the output gain level for each speaker. I set the pre-amp output level for the subwoofer to +12dB which is the maximum output level. At this input level to the subwoofer, I get acceptable sound with the subwoofer output level set in the middle of its range. If your receiver does not let you independently set the gain of the line-level subwoofer output, you might want to try the speaker-level inputs instead. If you study the output sound level curve for this subwoofer in the tests published by Wirecutter, you will see that its frequency response falls-off substantially below 50 Hz. I boosted the 25 Hz band of my pre-amp equalizer by about 4 dB to partially compensate for this, without adding noticeable distortion or "boominess" to the sound. Depending on your main speakers and your subwoofer placement you might find other settings to work better. This subwoofer has a down-firing port with internal bends. If you are going to have a port then facing it down is the best way to go in my opinion. My subwoofer sits on a hard surface which makes the sound more "live". To make it sound just a bit more mellow I put a couple layers of convoluted rubber drawer liner (like you would use in a tool chest) underneath it. This makes it sound a more like it would on a carpeted floor. To eliminate any possibility of rattling, I have dense rubber pads under the pointed feet. Again this would not be necessary on a carpeted floor. Too soon to assess long-term reliability. I will update this review if I encounter any problems later. * * * * I measured the power draw when the amplifier is idle. It appears to draw about 5 Watts when idle. The setting of the Auto On switch does not seem to affect this measurement. So I am going to just leave this thing powered on unless I am gone for a long time. Turning an amplifier on is harder on the electronics than just leaving it alone. ... show more

  • Great sound
Style: Subwoofer
I bought this subwoofer for a home stereo system. I do not have a speaker system for my TV. My amp is a NAD C316Bee and my bookshelf speakers are QAcoustics 3030i. It is a very good sounding system, but I thought it lacked some bass. This subwoofer added the extra bass that I needed. Sounds very good. I needed a subwoofer with Hi levels in and Hi levels out speaker wire attachments because my amp does not have any pre amp jacks or any other jack. My amp doesn't even have A and B speakers. Set up was easy. Ran speaker wires from amp to the sub, then from the sub to the speakers. I use 16 gauge speaker wire and had no difficulty plugging it into the sub. The clips in the back of the sub are cheap, but they work fine. I have the gain and freq set about half way for a nice balance without a lot of boom. I can crank up the volume and the music sounds great. Very loud with no distortion. I am very happy with this subwoofer and would recommend it. ... show more

  • Perfect example of you get what you pay for.
Style: Subwoofer
Learned a valuable lesson about buying the cheapest 12 inch sub I could find. Ordered one, it showed up with a horrible rattle like a wire was sitting against the back of the cone. Asked for a replacement through amazon and the second one worked (and it is a lot sloppier than I thought it was going to be, but hey, it slams decently hard and for movies it's not all that bad) until the second day I was using it. Then it developed the same rattle that the first one had and at this point I have zero faith left in them. I guess if you felt like it you could probably easily open them up and solve the problem with some hot glue or staples or something but I shouldn't have to fix my own brand new product just to make it function as it should have in the first place. I opened one up and I've been trying to get the rattle to stop but there isn't enough cable between the amp and the woofer to pull it to the side and staple it. I guess you could desolder the woofer from the wires and put them where they wont rattle and resolder the woofer to the wires but that's just a lot of effort for a subwoofer that, when working before the rattle started, was only about passible at best. Never been a huge fan of Monoprices cheaper stuff, for obvious reasons, but I didn't expect 2 subs in a row with a rattle that makes them completely unusable. I'd avoid this one and maybe Monoprice subs altogether if this is any indication of how they build subs. Giving this all 1 stars except for value for money, because it's so cheap that I guess if you're willing to tinker with it to get it working it does make room filling bass, (still a 12" cone, so it's gonna move some air) though it's pretty poorly defined and doesn't dig very deep into actual sub-bass levels. Also there's zero internal bracing of any kind so be warned, they aren't the sturdiest of sub boxes. Quality costs money and I'm not making this mistake again. ... show more
