  • Nice upgrade to 789
Love my Schiit Jotunheim 2 for its musical warmth, soul, and engagement. I added a THX 789 to my rack because I wanted a clean, detailed, reference amp to complement it. I liked the 789 for orchestral music especially due to its clean detailed presentation, but it sounded harsh in the highs to my ears, even paired with my warm DAC (the original Modi Multibit, using RCA to XLR cable). So I sold the 789 and got this THX 887 amp from Monoprice to replace it. While I did not do a direct A/B comparison, I can tell you this 887 is to my ears a noticeable step up in sound and tonal balance as it does not grate my ears with sharp treble detail like the 789 did. Much smoother overall than the 789. You might even say softer. I don't personally feel I am missing any detail. I am using the same DAC, the OG Modi Multibit. This pairing is surprisingly great. You're getting soundstage, punchy dynamics, and warmth from the DAC into an excellent measuring, clean/detailed-sounding amp that just gives you the music. Overall, I am pleased with this purchase and can confidently say that all the audio pundits who told you this 887 amp is no different sonically to the 789 were wrong. You get what you pay for and this amp is a great value and an upgrade to the 789, which is also a great value in its own right being at a lower cost than this amp. I would recommend choosing this one over the 789 if your budget can allow. ... show more

  • It simply is awesome!
Everything I have thrown at it sounds so much better. Crisp mids and tight bass. Highs are not bad either. Not sure what the THX deal is? If that's what makes it sound so much better, I am not surprised. I was used to DAC/Amp combos and now I know what my expensive headphones were longing for. LCDs, Focals, Beyerdynamics, Sennheisers all sound so much better. I also have the Sony MDR-7506 and Audio Technica ATH-M50x, these anyway sound good with the DAC/Amps. This amp drives all of them pretty good. I also have Topping D30/A30 Pro combo and Ifi Zen DAC v2 and Zen Can and couple of tube amps. They all have their signature sound stage but this amp paired with DacMagic 200M is really really expressive. ... show more

  • Absolutely excellent.
I have.... One complaint. I've owned it for a few days and sometimes, very few times, i hear a static sound. HOWEVER, i think this is due to my source rather than the amp. Either way, i wanted to put it out there. I love this thing. Absolutely love it. It made my headphones SING. I have several headphones, including Hifiman Arya, Audeze LCD 2, Audeze Mobius, Shure se846, AKG 701, Drop/Senn 6xx.... Etc Some have small improvements because they are already easy to drive. The Arya, the Audeze, and the 6xx are not easy to drive (well, the Audeze kinda is)...... But they made all three seem like a totally different headphone in a great way. ESPECIALLY the Arya. Plenty of power, incredible sound. If you are debating on getting an amp, like I was, just get this. You will be more than happy. This is my first amp. I used to run the headphones out of an upgraded sound card from Asus and EVGA. I should have done this first. ... show more

  • End game headphone amp.
This is the least distorted, most transparent, neutral, and powerful sound you can find in a headphone amp It is fully equipped with all the features for connection, balanced or single ended, for all headphones of any impedance and/or sensitivity. It truly is like a straight wire with gain. It has no competition. It is the best. It doesn't cost much. It should last a lifetime. ... show more

  • Good not great.
Nice features, good sound...needs some breakin. Out the box it actually sounded warmish, after some time the warmth took a slight back seat, sound real good for the price. However my FiiO M15 sounds better.

  • Sonically inferior to Drop THX 789 despite measurements
I have the Drop aka Massdrop THX 789 AAA amplifier, and it is my overall favorite amongst a dozen or so headphone amps I own. I bought this because I wanted a second one, and because the Drop unit is unavailable at the time, and because some reviews say this one is better per test measurements. However, often times how a product reproduces a static test signal into a dummy load does not translate as to how a device actually sounds when reproducing a more complex signal such as actual music into a reactive load such as headphones or speakers. This is one of those cases. It's not a bad sounding amp, but it's not a great one either, and the Drop 789 is. At its price it is a decent amp, but the Drop unit is very close in price and a notable step up in perceived fidelity. I also have a Burson Conductor 3x, a Monoprice Cavalli liquid platinum, a Massdrop Cavalli Tube Hybrid, a Massdrop Cavalli Liquid Platinum, a Flex FA-10, a Flux FA-12, a Hifiman EF400, and an iFi iDSD signature, and this amp is my least favorite sonically along with the liquid platinum and the FA 10. It is better than the Topping A90, another amp that measures very well but sounds dull. ... show more

  • Superb value, unimpeachable performance
The vast majority of casual audiophiles will find that this exceeds their needs. The sound quality is excellent. The build quality seems very solid. I'm listening to Bach's chaconne through my Senn HD 660S's right now, and the sound is mesmerizing. I hope Monoprice continues to take the headphone amp market seriously in the future. If they keep making headphone amps like this, with proper marketing and support, they can be major player. ... show more
