I come from a metal working background with exposure to large, metal working shop lathes at the various technical programs I've attended. Unfortunately, those are large, heavy, and expensive. So when I've had various projects I've needed to turn I've resorted to putting items in the chuck of a hand drill, spinning them, and holding a knife against them to shave them. Effective but limited. Limited by the size of the chuck, and limited by the setup requiring me to have 3 hands: one to hold the drill steady, one to steady myself, and one to steady my hand holding the knife as I attempt to expertly and precisely remove material. Voila! Enter the MINI (emphasis on "MINI") wood lathe! O.k., the chuck will accommodate much larger materials than a drill chuck would. And it's light, inexpensive, and everything's mounted like a proper lathe. I can breathe easy with my two hands! Well, two problems. The "chuck" that accommodates larger materials is horribly imprecise. It's a four "jaw/setscrew" arrangement that can be used to roughly position items. Precision is impossible. So, I resorted to buying the upgraded 3-jaw self-centering chuck. Which only has 10mm long jaws that are slightly better at holding work but are still inadequate. O.k., then let's rely on the live-center tailstock. Second problem. The tailstock positioning is just as imprecise as the chucks. The height can't change, but the horizontal positioning is all over the place. My task consisted of taking a 2" length 7/8" diameter dowel and turning 1" of length down to about 3/4" in diameter. First, I couldn't get the dowel centered in either chuck. Not to my satisfaction. Hence, when I turned the end down it was not concentric to the original o.d. by about 0.015". Not horrible, but not good enough for me. SO. Keep in mind that this lathe has limitations. Obviously. I really, really wanted to like it, and it is a quality tool that easily spun the heavy 3 jaw chuck on its lowest motor speed setting. There's a lot to like about it, but it unfortunately doesn't give me any increased capability over turning items in my hand drill. IF I had been able to find a 3-jaw chuck with more jaw depth that would properly support work (instead of just pinching it at the end) then I would've kept this lathe. One definite improvement that can be made is for the tailstock to use 4 bolts instead of 2. The 2 bolts do a minimal job of keeping the tailstock axis inline with the chuck center. Tiny machine with a big separate power supply that controls the motor speed. Never seen that before and don't know yet whether I will like it. The slowest speed seems fast and the fast speeds border on insanity. Such a large power supply doubles the space required for storage. However, after using the lathe a while I can say that the machine is OK. They cheaped out on the head and tail stocks and the tools included. These are frustrating to use and need to be replaced with ones that actually index and run true and a set of real chisels. Until then, you will not be able to turn anything accurately. After that, it is better. These three updates double the cost of the machine though which is why the seller included toy ones. Chess pieces, pens, and small tool handles are the size of things you can turn. Therefore, I rate this as a buy because of its cost but only if you also buy the upgraded parts to make it usable. ... show more

This mini lathes quality was low. It was off center as well, likely on the support end due to the flimsy frame. Good for just playing with I guess, but it will not give you an even rotation even when bolted on a flat surface, so if your looking for a good quality even turn this is not the right tool. Additionally it does not have the standard interchangeable mt1 or mt2 option on either end. You're stuck with the installed chuck on the head and the tails live end. ... show more
