Description

Mindfulness and Surfing casts a fresh perspective on this popular sport, and explores how riding the waves can be the ultimate meditation. Engaging author Sam Bleakley takes us on a soulful journey across the tideline of his personal and philosophical travels. Through lunar cycles and river surfing to the Taoism of nature, he reveals an acute awareness of what the oceans can tell us about our place in the natural world. Meditating on one of nature’s greatest elements – its salty swells, flow and peaks – he shares life lessons in mindfulness that will be relished by surfer and non-surfer alike. Read more

  • Superficial and sloppy
This book was quite a disappointment. I felt it was more written to catch the mindfulness trend and be among first in that field that connects mindfulness and surfing, than rather go deep in to the practice. It is quite short, the language is simple, and sometimes corny. Author is using lots of surf-cliche sentences. I am surfer and meditator and would disagree with author what it means to be truly mindful; he states, that surfing is by default an mindful act, which so far off from the truth in these hectic society. I found this book misleading in so many aspects. The only thing I liked were mindful exercises, which they would help you to increase awareness and become more mindful in practice. But again, also the practices were very similar in the sense that involve doing more before or after surfing (standing on the beach, waxing your board, coming out from the water, etc.). I couldn't manage to read the whole book, but as I gaze threw the content i didn't see a good example of combining really surfing and mindfulness... I had troubles reading this book in any aspects, but maybe would be interesting for someone who is new either to surfing or to mindfulness. In that case I imagine it could be inspiring. ... show more

  • A Book to Savor
I found Bleakley's book to be a beautiful addition to both my book collection and surfing gear. While another reviewer described this book as simple, I instead found it to be profound. Furthermore I found that Bleakley's book for me is best read and re-read slowly as a way to help live (and surf) deliberately, to paraphrase Thoreau. ... show more
