  • Very different--in a good way
Very different from the many other books I've read on hiring. It is like going on a tour of all that is important about hiring by an engaging personal guide who is conscious of your time, deeply passionate but objective about the topic. Even complex, but important concepts are not watered down, but are simply and easily explained with many real life examples and interesting research. The book covers, not just what might traditionally be considered the hiring process, but also clearly lays out the business case for investing in hiring and addresses technology and information-based techniques of sourcing, right through to onboarding and retaining those who are hired. Of course, Legal, validation, proper use of assessments, and other areas of hiring are addressed--not just what is important, but why you, your hiring managers, and executives should care. I have managed selection and assessment teams in large organizations for over 15 years. This book makes it easier to communicate to HR leaders and business leaders to educate and influence them concerning the necessity for sensibly investing in hiring processes. I would say that this book is not for those who are looking for easy answers to the complex questions of hiring. I think this book is for those who want a grounded understanding of hiring and their options, to be able to tease out what is important from what is not, to know where the pitfalls are and how to avoid them, to know what question to ask, and to steer clear of charlatans and convincing well-meaning, but misguided assessment vendors. ... show more

At the heart of the work is a survey of the new technologies and methods available to improve how key organizational talent is recruited, assessed and selected. Using specific examples, he presents his case in a lucid, accessible manner that enables the reader to easily grasp how to increase the return on investments in people, while minimizing the prevailing legal risks. Dr. Jones says, "I like things simple." Indeed, this book is for busy people who require straightforward, practical guidance on how to make Million Dollar Hires. ... show more

  • The Best of All Worlds
Dr. Jones' book Million-Dollar Hire represents the best of all worlds, providing high-powered expertise in selection system consulting with methodological rigor using terminology and examples that are easy to understand. As a selection consultant, I have worked with many of the concepts in this book such as validity and selection process utility. This book explains difficult concepts in a manner that is user-friendly to lay people while, at the same time, maintaining the linkage to professional practice and legal requirements. This book provides a valuable road map and primer for individuals and organizations seeking to implement world-class selection systems that make a demonstrable contribution to the bottom-line. At the same time, people will be able to use the examples to explain the importance of good selection to important organizational stakeholders. I heartily recommend this book based on my personal experience of over 25 years as a selection system consultant. ... show more

  • Love this Book!
I absolutely loved this book and found it so instructive on really complicated statistical principals related to the hiring process. I am an in-house labor attorney so I have to be well-versed in these topics. What I liked most about the book is that it boiled down these complex concepts into an understandable format. I will be using it to help educate my HR people and other business associates who need to know this stuff! ... show more
