The reader book category is infested with two problems: 1- Overly commercialized characters in series which are annoying and unoriginal from an aesthetic standpoint... as well as concerning from a parental standpoint. Expecting that you need Dora the Explorer or Disney's Cinderella in a book in order to get your child interested in reading is a dangerous and unhealthy precedent to start. 2-The other problem is that most readers suffer from completely banal story lines (if a cat sitting on a mat is a story at all). Mice on Ice is refreshing in a number of ways! The art is bright, engaging and original (which catapults it ahead of 90% of other readers right there!) and the story is simple and sweet. There is one little unexpected twist that develops as a result from the track marks in the ice and it's fun to watch little kids notice how the tracks develop through the pages. That's essentially the story right there. All in all, it's a lovely winter book, great for early readers who can sound out basic words; it was perfect for my 6 year old son to read and loved equally by my 3 year old daughter. ... show more

We got this book at a garage sale and my 3.5-year old son crack up every time we read it. You have to read it with a bit of a sense of humor, especially the last page. This is the first book that my four year old has not become frustrated with while learning to read. We have tried so many early reading books and she has never even tried to sound out the words or look for sight words but this book was different. It is simple with very few words on each page and the same words throughout the book.
