I bought random waterproof hiking boots for my sons for a trip to Iceland and they turned out not waterproof at all so I bought these because I had seen Merrell brand suggested over and over in the Iceland travel groups I'm in. I tested these by holding them under running water for a good 20 seconds and ZERO water got through. No leak, no dampness. My 8 year old wore these out of the box for a one month hiking trip in the Alps. He hiked 2 -3 hours or so a day in these with regular sports cotton socks and was happy. No blisters or probles. Recommended.

I have owned multiple pairs of Merrill products for many many years. They may not necessarily be the best hiking shoes around, but for me, and the way they fit well on my slightly wide and flat feet, they just rock. They last a long time and the waterproofing stays on for at least a couple of years. This by far exceeds my expectations as I live in the Pacific Northwest.
