An upgrade shouldn't be inferior to its predecessor but these boots are indeed less than (in every way) the Moab 2. I weighed them and they are lighter than Moab 2's, which stands to reason as the material is not as substantial. In fact, they are flimsy. Perhaps they should have been called Moab Lite. We hike mostly off trail and these would never last. They clearly lack the structure and durability of the Moab 2. Consider this, they are supposed to be the latest and greatest Moab yet the retail price is the same as the Moab 2 boot. Merrell isn't going to sell a boot that is less profitable than there mainstay (Moab 2). So if the price is the same, materials must be cheaper. The result is a lower quality boot. I didn't think they were more comfortable either which was Merrell's claim, boosting a softer midsole and enhanced insole. Big miss here also. ... show more

Excellent value for the money

I was choosing between these and the Salomon Men's X Ultra 3 Mid GTX. The Salomons had a similar fit and probably better waterproofing. But these cost $90 and the Salomons cost $150 and, from what I could tell, the Salomons didn't justify the significant price gap. Note that the Moab 3 seems to run small. I've worn Nike 10 running shoes for years and I comfortably fit a 9.5 or even a 9 in the Moab 3. The 9 fits better out of the box, but the 9.5 is a better fit for when my feet swell and/or when using thicker socks. In any case, if you wear Nike sneakers, my experience suggests ordering a half size down to fit the Moab 3. ... show more

Great boots

My husband usually wears the lower version of these boots all the time. I ordered these thinking they were the same. Now that he's worn these, he likes the higher sides better than the lower Moabs. So glad. They look great and the color matches his existing pants.
